Re: Big Lots Part 10 - List your FINDS here (NO trades)

I still get a couple DVDs a month on average from Big Lots- got CB4 for 3 bucks last week, I paid $35 for it on laserdisc when it came out! I still see some good titles there but they're often ones I already have. Blu-Ray has cut into recent titles too as I won't buy a regular DVD if the same title is out on Blu-Ray, regardless of the price difference. Even if the glory days are over I still have a ton of discs I've accumulated that will take me forever to watch. Looking at my many shelves, for which space is always decreasing, most of my discs have come from Big Lots.

Ha! I should check my copy of WW. It's still sealed in storage somewhere.

*nods*

Not all of the copies have them. I want to say it's an episode of "Shazam!".

Re: Big Lots Part 10 - List your FINDS here (NO trades)

I suspect that the DVD stock at Big Lots is drying up because the available stock is dwindling.

From the late 1990s to the mid-2000s, DVD was a huge consumer product. And then, for whatever reason, returns began to diminish. People were buying fewer DVDs, and the number of places that sold them shrank. And the places that still sell DVDs devote less shelf space to them now than they did a few years ago.

As such, there were warehouses of unwanted DVDs sitting around collecting dust and new releases were not meeting sales expectations. All of this excess stock was then sold off in bulk to retailers like Big Lots, who deal in such items.

Now, studios are much more conservative with what catalog titles they release and how many units they produce, so this trend of decreasing stock at Big Lots should continue.

Currently, most overstock is coming from retailer returns as they shrink their stock. You're right, the studios are pressing less; note the trend for classics to go oop, then reappears as Mods.

I get several overstock lists. There is still lots of stuff; but oddly quality of titles available are going down, while prices are going up. One wholesale who shall go unnamed (this one is NOT Super D) has been sitting on literally thousands of dvd overstocks for at least 10 years; & they're still (unsuccessfully) trying to get the same prices they did 10 years ago. In many cases, I couldn't retail them for as much as the "wholesale"!

The #1 reason I have bought from BL for resale the last few years is that their $2.40-$3 retail is often cheaper than overstock wholesalers (unless one buys in HUGE quantities from high up the wholesale foodchain, meaning 10's of thousands of dollars per purchase).

I was wandering down Lee Highway in No. VA and happened upon a Big Lots that I didn't know was there (apparently it's been there since last Nov.) and found CB4 and an Unrated copy of Mother of Tears.

Peal got a few $5 titles, the one that sticks out seemed like a case of Return To The Planet Of The Apes @ $5.

Re: Big Lots Part 10 - List your FINDS here (NO trades)

New blue-tagged $3 titles in the Cherry Hill, NJ store:

Rio Bravo
Key Largo (snapper)
Rumble in the Bronx
Havana
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (slimpak)
Brighton Beach Memoirs
EdTV
A Perfect Getaway
Black Sheep
Eraser
End of Days
The Players Club
Covert One: The Hades Factor

Also the 2010 release of Altered States--no idea if it's the same transfer as the older release that showed up at Big Lots years ago.

I love Key Largo, EGR is so far over the top that it works.

Re: Big Lots Part 10 - List your FINDS here (NO trades)

In addition to many of the titles Deet listed, I was surprised to find a number of Warner snap-case titles at the local BL:

Presumed Innocent $5
Father of the Bride $5
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective $3
Blood Work $3
Key Largo $3
City by the Sea $3

I don't think any of them are rare, although it may be somewhat unusual to find snap cases in brand new condition in 2013.

I miss snap cases- they're a hell of a lot better than those stupid Eco-Cases with holes everywhere.

They are awful if they break. The hub on them that holds the disk breaks more often than they should. You can't just use a generic case because the artwork is not transferable.

It's true that you can't easily use a generic case, but it's fairly easy to find a replacement tray for $2-$3 (i.e. some unwanted title at BL or another closeout/video store), unsnap the broken tray, and attach the new one. My beef would be with the weakness of the cardboard portion to moisture and stress, but thankfully, that's been only a theoretical problem for me so far.

Re: Big Lots Part 10 - List your FINDS here (NO trades)

Found Parental Guidance at my store last week for 5 bucks. I think that's the newest release I've ever seen at Big Lots... It scanned as "Marigold Hotel/Means War" so I guess The Exotic Marigold Hotel and This Means War are also in that assortment, but I did not see those... Also bought Crossing Over on BD for $5. Worth it just for the Alice Eve nude scenes.

Pearl Street did not get the new Warner batch. Does anyone know if Puyallup got it?

I called Puyallup (this Warner batch sounds interesting). They said they did not get any either; which likely means no store in Western Washington did.

Wow, those are actually some great titles. I already own most of them, but I might have to go out in search of Winchester 73.

(I haven't been in a Big Lots for... A long time, so it'll be a nice trip down memory lane to go back.)
