I'm keeping an eye on that one too. While the current ~$14 is not bad I'd rather pay less if possible. I'm somewhat annoyed that since I jumped on Part 1 at $3.99 it's also going to be a lightning deal for probably a buck or two less. I'll probably get another "just because" if that's the case...

Re: Black Friday 2011 - The DVD thread

I am new here and I have been noticing this thread for the past few days.

Anywho, I checked out Amazon's Black Friday calendar and it amazes me. Jarhead for $.99?! 300 for $1.99?! I am definitely looking forward to this.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but Amazon.com has been doing a Countdown to Black Friday all week. In fact, the Countdown to Black Friday sales event ends today.

Barnes & Noble has it and a few other pretty good prices as of today:

How I Met Your Mother - Season 6 - $15.99

Modern Family - Season 2 - $17.49

Raising Hope - Season 1 - $15.99

Seasons 2-7 of The Waltons are on sale for $8.39 each.

There are also several active coupons available in the Barnes & Noble Bargains thread that can be used for these items.

Just be aware that you only have 15 *minutes* to check out with a lightning deal once you've placed it in your cart. You really need a prime account to milk these, otherwise you'll find yourself picking up other stuff to get free shipping or just paying the shipping fees. At least the "regular" amazon price is what's used to calculate shipping threasholds *not* the "deal" price so that *can* help some. If you don't have prime already, check out the amazon mom program. It gets you 3 months of prime for free - no, you do not have to be a mom to qualify.

Does anyone know if the Harry Potter: Complete 8-Film Collection (8 Discs) $39.99 at Best Buy is the blu-ray set?

It can definitely be tough, though not impossible, for non-Prime members who are looking to spend $25 to get free shipping. I've been regularly shopping Amazon BF for the last four years and have never needed it, but I do a lot of planning beforehand.

I have a lot of wish lists that I'm quite familiar with, filled with movies and books that (are at very good prices) I can quickly pull from. Pre-orders work to fill the $25 minimum, as do Bargain Books and books purchased in the 4-3 program. For example, I'll throw 4 $7.99 books in my cart that total $23.97 after the 4-3 discount and that gets me free shipping on any Lightning Deals that cost $1.03 or more.

That being said, one needs to be quick to pull this off, and I might give in and join this time. There is exactly one advertised LD each day that I have an interest in. I don't know what the other deals might turn out to be, but buying $25 x 8 (and it's always more than $25) is a fair sized commitment just to get one $2-$8 movie per day.

If you don't have prime already, check out the amazon mom program. It gets you 3 months of prime for free - no, you do not have to be a mom to qualify.
Decent advice when available, but they're currently not accepting new members to Amazon Mom.

I can't believe if you haven't had Prime in the last 4 years, you acct does not offer a 1-month trial membership. I just got Prime on an account I created 10 years ago that I rarely use. I just pre-ordered a DVD released in 2012 (that I will cancel later). As I was going through the checkout process, it asked me if I wanted a trial membership. Might be worth a look and might even save some $$$.

I agree about the planning. If I didn't get the Prime, I was either going to have to pass on some stuff or find all the stuff I wanted and hope the price doesn't fluctuate before I am able to use it to pad my LDs.

It's definitely offered to me, but I've heard stories of people having trouble canceling and that some feel like the service declines in some way if they cancel at the end of the trial. This may not actually be a problem, and could have more to do with those specific individuals, but I figure why risk it? I don't care if an order takes two days, two weeks, or longer to get to me and I have enough wish listed books/pre-orders/items that are at good enough prices that I feel comfortable paying what Amazon has them on sale for when I use them to meet the $25 minimum.

Also, if you take the trial then I've heard you can't join again, on trial, for another year. So long as I don't take the trial, it's always available to me if I do decide I really need it.

I do appreciate your advice. I have stuck to only buying books and other items that I would pick up anyway at some point, so I don't feel that I've lost money. But it sounds like a program with many advantages that is useful for many, probably most, people.

Absolutely and don't forget the big Target online sale that had WB boxed sets for under $10 each when you bought two. Can't remember if these sales were "Black Friday" or "Cyber Monday".

Re: Black Friday 2011 - The DVD thread

Some of the drops that I've seen. iirc all of these except 24 are the best Amazon has ever had them:

24 - Most Seasons are now $15.49
Castle: The Complete Third Season $18.99
Friday Night Lights: Seasons 1-5 $12.99
It's Garry Shandling's Show: The Complete Series $69.99
The Good Wife: The First Season $13.99
Modern Family: The Complete First Season $12.99
Mad ABout You Season 1-3 $9.99
Mad About You: The Complete Fourth Season $13.99
Scream 4 $10.99
X-Men: First Class $8.99

I just saw this site in the Blu-Ray forum, posted by Superdaddy. I set it to DVD's and it lists all of the titles that are now at their lowest ever prices:

Just bought it from Amazon for $17.49. I'd qualify it as a sale.

Has WB shop announced their Black Friday sale?

I'd love to pick up some of the Archive selections at a deal.

don't know how low it is for people with coupons and member discounts, but it is 12.99 on best buy site, with free shipping now.

last season of rescue me is also 12.99 there, as well as curb your enthusiasm for 14.99

This is listed as a lightning deal on Thursday so I'm wondering if it'll drop even more.

NBC has some deals, but unfortunately shipping kills them.

This will be $8.99 at BestBuy.com starting at Thursday, midnight so if you can't be online for the Amazon
deal (which will probably be $8.99) at 3:30 pm ET on Thursday afternoon, you can order it then.

LOL-the Amazon deal being at 3:30 pm ET on Thursday afternoon - that will be the time I'll be at my
Aunts who I'm buying the DVD for. Unless I want it to be a surprise, I could use her computer to order
the DVD from Amazon.com - Nahh, just going to order it from Best Buy at midnight-Thursday.

Did pretty good on the Modern Family DVDs for her - got Season 1 for free via mycokerewards.com and
now Season 2 at BestBuy.com for $8.99 before tax.
