I'm not saying your argument is wrong for you, but everyone has different priorities/quirks.
Nice to see a humanist approach. I prefer the acknowledgement of human diversity to "Bend over to Blu-ray!"

Now let me step into my devil's advocate role and mention that the cost of going hi-def could be as little as zero, or even cheaper than not going blu, seriously.

Keep in mind that you don't need a hi-def TV to use a BD player, and that all my DVDs play on my BD player, and play better at that (upconvert).

Cost of the BD player = $100 (they've been as cheap as $50 fwiw)

Savings on the multiple titles bought where the BD has been cheaper than the DVD = $115.

^ What he said.

Also, take into consideration the cost of upgrading later on. Buying Blu now (especially when Criterions are the same price) will save you the cost & aggravation of having to buy the same title again down the road.

I agree. Unless it it upgraded for little or no extra $ out of pocket then I don't have a problem with it.. But I fail to see the point of buying the dvd at 15 or 20 when it was new, then selling said dvd for 5 just to plop down 20 or more on the blu..

but what Trevor and Bucknaked said in recent post are something to consider..

If the Criterion dvd and blu are the same price.. why not go blu!

I had a scratched disk that was unplayable, they didn't even respond to my email when I asked about a replacement program for discs. They are not good people.

And I haven't bought a Criterion since that happened, which was about three years ago.

I never received it for free, last time I ask John, they wanted $5 for a missing booklet. But that was at the beginning of the year or so.

Tomorrow, but I might stay up late tonight checking to see when it goes live online, and get a few orders in that way.

Yeah, because emails never get lost, people never have bad days, and some companies have 100% perfect customer service so you just stick with them.

Fwiw, Criterion has been great in my few customer services dealings.

I noticed on the B&N web site when I was looking for information about shipping they did mention they delivered to PO boxes. They probably would send your order through the mail instead of using UPS.

I remember in the last sale, people who had P.O.'s (esp. those living in Alaska) had a few problems. I'll need to search for it.

Criterion sent me that link right now, and yet there aren't any discounts on their DVDs.

Looks more like a blast from the past. I noticed below the sale banner it says "Holiday 2009 Favorites" over on the right side of the page.

Has that page been in place since last year? I just clicked that link after Criterion tossed it out on their Twitter account.

hmmm, I only want Yojimbo/Sanjuro and am not a member. I heard that you can cancel your membership for a full refund within 30 days for any reason. if that's so I can just sign up for the membership and then cancel the next day after picking up Yojimbo/Sanjuro to use that $5 off coupon.

Apparently it has been around since then. I was playing with some links and even found a page that looks like it goes back to Christmas 2008.

I don't think I would go to all that trouble if that was all you're planning to buy. If it is available with the online sale why not create a new account and use the 20% coupon for making a first purchase instead. With the library link and coupon I think you'll get a better deal since the DVD lists for about $70.

oooooooo, not a bad idea then. do I have to use an affiliate link to get the 20% off or is it just B%N doing that automatically for creating a new account???

re: Criterion Sale? Ever Again? (NOW ACTIVE/ALIVE AT B&N)

Ok, I've never made an account with B&N, and we live in the sticks so online is the way to go for me. I have a couple of questions

1) How fast do titles sell out online?
2) The 20% Coupon for the first purchase, would work for the sales?
3) What sort of prices can I expect for dvds? 50% Off The current price or 50% off the list price? Whats an average DVD run during the sale
4) I'm looking at Possibly yojimbo/Sanjuro as well and some other titles like lord of the flies and the night porter - if anyone is bored what recommendations would you make for me based on my collection in my signature? I recently ordered The Hidden Fortress and Samurai I.

The sale is starting tomorrow, according to my good friends at the Criterion Forum.

I recall during the last two sales that a few titles (some of the Eclipse series and box sets) did sell out online, but they were restocked right before the sale ended, so I was still able to pick up the titles I was looking at.

The 50% off is from the MSRP list price. Most 2-disc DVDs and single-disc blu-rays list at $39.99 so 50% off that price will be your starting point. There are also a good number of single-disc Criterion DVDs that list for $29.99before the discount, so those will be much cheaper.

Yes, the 20% adds another discount off the 50% of msrp prices. It's really only an extra 10% of course, since the 20% if off of the 50% price.
