A CSR today told me that they'll be doing this sale again in the Spring and it should become a biannual thing. So that's exciting for everything except our collective bank accounts.

Couldn't disagree more. Opinions, I suppose. Roger Ebert's on my side, though!

The Third Man was reasonably good but I found it to be over-rated personally. I've never seen Playtime. Overall, I'd say you did great.

Hey thanks. I'm no fan of altering film after the fact- I think I'll exchange Last Emperor for a quality release and hold off seeing the flick till its properly restored to its original OAR (which, I have to believe, will happen someday)

As for Criterions to despise, Im sure I'll be heckled for this one, but I'll nominate Roman Polanski's Repulsion. It should have been renamed "Boredom""- I just couldn't finish it (and the only other film I can call truly boring that I have seen would be the Julianne Moore film "Safe"- Criterion, leave that one alone)

Non-Members (Everyone can use)
Save $5 off a $50 purchase at B&N.com. Enter code F7C3H7F at checkout.

Is there another code for non-members to get $5 off $50? I tried this one above and the website wouldn't recognize it. --Peter

Considering that DD's best sale days may be behind them, I am excited to hear this. This will be the sale I look forward to from now on.

I stopped at my local B&N to try and find the Complete Monterey Pop BD set with no luck but the salesman ordered it for me to the store at the discounted price. Picked up the Kagemusha BD while I was there for

Agreed. If this sale does in fact become a regular event at B & N, I might actually eliminate my entire Criterion wish list sometime in the foreseeable future.

Pre-ordered Downhill Racer

Guess the 50% off works on pre-orders if it is released during the sale.

Re: Criterion DVD's and Blu-Rays 50% off at Barnes and Noble 11/10

I'm trying to get Christmas shopping done early this year and this Criterion sale is definitely helping.

For my brother, I'm getting Unfaithfully Yours. He should like that.

However, I'm unsure about my younger sister, who is 13. I'm trying to get her into good movies. I was wondering about Monsoon Wedding. Anyone seen it? Are there a lot of subtitles? I'm trying to ease her in slowly and don't want her to complain about reading too much (but I doubt she would). What's the tone of the movie like?

Re: Criterion DVD's and Blu-Rays 50% off at Barnes and Noble 11/10

Also, for myself, I want to get Stranger than Paradise. My only hesitation is that it will be a blind buy.

I've read about the movie and have obviously heard great things. I really like dialogue based movies but am wondering if this one just meanders a bit too much for my taste. Are the characters compelling? Is anything compelling? From what I understand, it's a bit of a meditation on aimlessness and boredom. That's fine with me as long as there is something keeping my interest.

I'm trying to think of other movies I've seen and liked that might be similar. I really liked Linklater's Tape, which is all dialogue and in one room. I like anything Linklater, who I understand was influenced by 80s indie, but realize he is much more mainstream.

Re: Criterion DVD's and Blu-Rays 50% off at Barnes and Noble 11/10

Online plan worked almost perfectly. I was off by $0.45 with the CD I originally wanted. I had to go with anther more expensive CD to push the order over the $50 mark for the extra $5 discount. Total with cashback should be about $46.

* Criterion Collection: Complete Monterey Pop Fest
* Online Price: $34.99
* -$8.50
$26.49

* Wings of Desire
* Online Price: $19.99
* -$2.00
$17.99

* Laughin' & Cryin' with Reverend Horton Heat
* Online Price: $15.69
* -$6.57
$9.12

Shipment Subtotal: $53.60
Shipping & Handling: FREE
Sales Tax: $3.76
Shipment Total: $57.36
Order Discounts: -$5.00
ORDER TOTAL: $52.36

Need a .99c filler to get the 5 off 50. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Not exactly the filler you are looking for but... If you have any interest in books you could do the BOGO coupon on BN Classics.

I think it's hilarious, but my sense of humor runs to the deadpan and the dry. Nothing really "happens", in the traditional sense of the word, but it's certainly not a particularly avant-garde or difficult film. If you enjoyed Slacker, this would probably be up your alley. Did you see/like Down By Law? Stranger than Paradise, to oversimplify, is a 90-minute version of the first section of that film. For $13.64, I'd say it's worth the blind buy. Even if you don't care for it, the resale value on Amazon ought to get you your $13.64 back. The same cashier who rang me up yesterday was in again today, and once again I used 3 $5 coupons on one order. Umberto D, Stray Dog and Throne of Blood for $36.66. I'm tempted to return after lunch, but I'm worried this same guy will start to question all of these $5 coupons. I'll probably wait a couple of days.

Not really a $1 filler, but there are several Paramount DVDs that are $3.99 -- Rosemary's Baby, Don't Look Now, Murder on the Orient Express, and a few others.

Thanks, that helps. I liked Slacker so I'm going for it. Like you said, selling it on Amazon or Ebay would probably refund me if for some reason I don't like it.

I wish Paris, Texas was out. Since it comes out in January, I'll probably just wait until the next 50% off sale which is rumored for sometime in the Spring.

Re: Criterion DVD's and Blu-Rays 50% off at Barnes and Noble 11/10

Maybe I am paranoid I think they are onto me in Austin . . . Stopped at another BN and got Repulsion on Blu and they guy tried scanning the coupon, couldn't, so he typed it in. As he was typing it in he said "You know you can only use this once right?" He gave me the discount anyway. I don't know if there was an internal memo, mass email to other Austin BN stores from the joker who squashed my attempt yesterday, or something is showing up on my account.
