Re: TARGET -- 2 packs of TV sets -- 19.99

Regarding I Dream of Jeannie S1 & S2 pack, how is the quality of the colorization on season 1? I couldn't find any reviews for the colorized versions on DVD Basen and only a handful of mentions on Amazon (mixed in with the B&W version) which were mostly negative, but a couple positive.

If anyone saw the colorized versions of Walt Disney's Zorro season 1, I thought those were decent colorizations, but the reviews I saw said they were awful, so I never know if I should believe all the negative reviews of virtually everything colorized from the anti-colorization zealots.

Unfortunately I don't think Target (or Walmart or any other story with this 2 pack) has the IDOJ 2 pack with B&W season 1 and color season 2, right?

Do you happen to remember how much the Family Ties sets were?

Thanks.

I thought the color on Jeannie season one looked great, very natural... IMO, It looked like they were shot in color.

$19.99 each for S1/S2 or S3/S4. I like Family Ties a lot, but I'll be waiting for lower prices on these packs before buying.

Hasslein, thanks for the opinion on IDOJ's colorization. It's nice to see a favorable pro-colorization opinion.

I don't support colorization on any level, but I have to agree about the ZORRO episodes. That was by far the best colorizing job I've ever seen. On the rare screenings of them when I was too lazy to turn down the color on my set, I couldn't believe how good they looked.

My advice would be to pick up the IDOJ set while it's cheap and keep in mind that just because you have a colorized copy it does not mean you have to watch it that way!

I just bought Alf 3-4. There wasn't a large selection of 12.99 2-packs. But there were a lot of 16.99 ones. I may go back for those...

I was thinking of doing the exact same thing. But I'm torn inside about wanting to get S4 on Blu-Ray. Do I need it on BD? Of course not, but since it is available my mind is telling me I must get the best version available!

Prowler,

They (Family Ties) were $24.86 per two season set and Martin was for $19.96 and I forgot to mention that there are some sets at Wal-mart that have this deal where you buy one DVD set, like season one of Criminal minds or NCIS or CSI and you get the next set free, but here's the catch...it's of a random season and not the following season. So for example, I saw Criminal Minds S1 bundled up with Criminal Minds S4 and Medium had S1 and S5 bundled up and CSI had S1 and S6 together, which was rather odd. Jeffersons S1 & S2 and S5 & S6 was also available at Wal-mart for $14.96

Colorization is a touchy subject with many people. The opinions are generally "I hate it" or "It looks good" with little middle ground. Like you I feel most of the negative reviews are from anti-colorization zealots. I was one in the early days of colorization but it's come a *long* way in the past 10 years or so and *can* look very good if done properly. I own several recently colorized movies and, while I prefer the B/W versions because that's how I first saw them and the way they were originally intended, the colorization is mostly excellent.

For TV shows I generally feel most producers would have used color had the option been available. Disney wanted to do Zorro in color and pushed for it for the aborted 3rd season which ultimately caused ABC to cancel the program. IDOJ and Bewitched suffered simply because they started just prior to the major push by the networks into color production. Color production cost lots extra and most folks in the mid 60's still had B/W sets.

While I'm mostly a purist and generally dislike colorization of any type I felt the job done on Zorro was excellent and did not detract from the series. Unless I was looking for issues it rarely distracted as nothing just jumped out as being un-natural looking.

It's been a while since I've watch S1 of IDOJ, but I recall the colorization job being very good (I own the color version). I recall it being better than what was done on Bewitched and almost as good as the job done on Zorro. I thoroughly enjoyed the color version. I went for it simply because that show screams *color* and felt I could always turn down the color if it distracted/detracted too much (the same reasoning I used for Bewitched).

When examining a colorization job I almost always look at how well mouth interiors, especially the teeth, are done. On Bewitched they are almost B/W most of the time and frequently just don't look quite "right" with the color job. I don't recall that distraction on IDOJ *or* Zorro, even though the same studio did the colorization work on both IDOJ and Bewitched.

For $6.40/season I'd not quibble. I paid $10 and it was well worth it.

Re: TARGET -- 2 packs of TV sets -- 19.99

BobO'Link and Professor Echo, thanks for your comments on colorization. I now feel better about keeping the IDOJ S1 colorized set in spite of a few negative comments about colorization on the Amazon reviews. I tend to trust people's opinions here more than on Amazon.

Speaking a little more of Zorro, when I first caught the series on The Disney Channel (before I knew anything about it) I started when they were in their colorized episodes run (they alternated between colorized and B&W), so I assumed they were filmed in color since I didn't see any problems in the color. It wasn't until they wrapped around and started over in B&W that I said "to myself what happened to the color?" and then learned they were filmed in B&W.

I've only got Zorro S1 in color (Disney Rewards) and the 2 B&W Disney Treasures sets. I am tempted to get S2 in color with my remaining Disney Rewards because being a non-purist I prefer watching them in color. That makes it silly to own the Treasures except to be a completist.

Must be regional price differences. I'm sure they were $19.96 at mine. I made a point to pick them up and look at them since I am a Family Ties fan and want to buy them, but I'm going to hold out for at least $5 cheaper. They are pure bare bones releases... the episodes themselves, next episode previews (which I never liked), and nothing else. There are just too many great lines from that series that I like to quote, but I'll resist doing so here.

You found alf season 3-4 (and not just 1-2) for $12.99 at Target? I didn't think they bundled those.

Just hoping some newer two-packs will get released soon. But for this week at Target, those are a gret bargain to get.

Manzana,

I think it varies basd on store location as I saw those sets in a suburban WM outside of Chicago this past Sunday, but if you can grab those at that price, then my suggestion is to do so, BUT then we run into the problem of buying the sets and then never being able to complete them anytime soon. That's why I've been hesitatant in purchasing a few sets of my own at this time.

This was in the burbs of Chicago.
No sign of Lucy 2 packs or Gilligan's Island in southern California. How much were these?

Mr. Articulate,

They have those two specific sets in the back of the Target stores where they have those bulk sales of things with the fancy yellow and red arrowed signs. These sets are 15 bucks for S1 & S2 of Gilligan's Island and the same goes for 21 Jump Street, hunter and I Love Lucy from what I saw there.

Re: TARGET -- 2 packs of TV sets -- 19.99

Thanks for the heads up on Alf 3-4. Mine had some in the main DVD aisle. $26 for the full series is probably as cheap as it will go, even if they ever release a complete set in saver packaging. I did notice today that some of the same seasons were in black cases and others were in clear for some reason.

Has anyone ever spotted a 2 pack of Seasons 3 & 4 of I LOVE LUCY? They suck you in with the first two seasons in one cheap pack and then stock the shelves next to it with the following individual seasons at double the price.

I don't mean to sound too much like a cheap bastard, but I am a cheap bastard so it's hard not to.

It's not guaranteed, but maybe they'll come out with seasons 3 and 4 in a double pack when they start stocking the next wave of TV-DVD double packs? That's just a guess, though. I'm only saying this because my Target had originally stocked seasons 1 - 4 of Everybody Loves Raymond for $19.99 apiece (some were $19.00). A few months later they sold seasons 1 and 2 in a double pack for $19.99, and a month or two later when they changed up the TV-DVD double packs I started seeing seasons 3 and 4 packaged together.

"Earl" season 1 & 2 was bundled last year, now S 3 & 4 are on the shelves (wish I'd bought 1 & 2 back then).

Lucy season sets are on sale at FYE through this Friday for about $14.99.

Re: TARGET -- 2 packs of TV sets -- 19.99

Thanks RJH and Mr. Art. Since I haven't yet watched the Season 1 & 2 set a year after I bought it, I guess I can be a little more patient for the next two or more seasons to show up bundled.

Hey Mr. Art, we both reside in beautiful downtown Burbank.
