For the masses, when they see a sign that says "But 2, Get 3rd Free!", they think it's manna from heaven, they hit the jack-pot, and won the lottery all in the same day. To do a financial analysis after the fact would be truly sobering.

For a lot of us, we need to be keen shoppers, on account of the volume of titles we buy. Having been burned once, twice, and maybe three times during the ridiculous years of multiple-dip DVD collecting, there was no way I was letting that happen again when I made the switch to Blu-ray.

I noticed B&N is starting to add new DVD sales for next month and looks like they are still qualifying for B2G1F sale at the moment. Might have one last chance to get something cheap before it ends at 2:59 tonight.

That is the only store where I was denied multiple coupons, and they did it to me twice, once at the front registers, and once in the media department. The Mayfair store never denied me on my 9 coupons used there, and Bayshore worked for two at once. I did use 9 at the 76th street store, but that's my local store so I made more trips there...

Pretty much. I'd add that people in general usual don't wait for prices to drop before buying too. I almost bought "The American" this weekend with the coupon but then I realized at close to $17 it really isn't that good of a bargain. It's only $24 on Amazon and I'm betting it falls a bit further at some point in time. For a similar reference point, Up In the Air (another Clooney film) dropped to $12.49 at some point last year. So I'm just going to wait it out.

About the different responses from CSRs when we try to use ANY complicated coupon. I spoke to quite a few CSRs during the Criterion sales but one in particular I reached a casual rapport with. I found she was always forthright and never was petty. She told me that the store managers meet to try to determine exactly what the terms of the coupons mean and expect the staff to follow their decision. Sales records are tracked and if someone repeatedly errs in applying coupons to sales they were told shouldn't qualify, they will be reprimanded with a letter and face termination.
This person said her manager determined that the old $5 off $20 DVD meant original BN selling price, not current discount price as during the 50% off sale. Even so, if I got declined with a coupon at this location, I never argued very much and just went to a different branch or came back later.
Saving a few bucks is always great to me but never if it risks someone's gainful employment.

too funny!
i've had nothing but problems getting mayfair to accept coupons lately, while the 76th location will take anything and everything under the sun. guess it truly depends on who is working on the day.

Amen. Besides 'living and learning' from past purchases, it's also a different marketplace. In the past, new release sales moved with purchases from 14 - 25 year-olds primarily. Now, many just download the movie illegally or borrow and rip it to their laptops or are too busy on the Internet or playing video games to care. Obviously, the proliferation of titles, growth of structured secondary markets like Amazon Marketplace and options like Netflix, Redbox, library collections and on-demand all put increasing pressures on new DVD/HD sales. Even though many of us may have seen this coming, I'll admit that some discounted prices on new releases on blu-ray is still a bit eye-opening, making one wonder how much lower the price-point will be in coming years. It's got bloodbath written all over it.

Very true. At Mayfair, I had the girl all 3 times I went (pretty sure there is only one girl that works in the media department at that store). That was 6 of my coupons. The other 3 coupons were done individually at the front registers, for one book, and two ship to home orders...

For those who ordered items in-store using the coupons, did you get a shipping confirmation? My order got delayed and I'm starting to get a bit paranoid that they will cancel my order. I did not buy any pre-order items, just stuff that wasn't in store and that had cheaper online prices.

One of my items shipped, but it was just a book. I haven't had a DVD or BD ship yet...

I placed 2 orders that had ship to home items. One was for the Star Wars: Complete Saga BD pre-order. Surprisingly, that has not been cancelled yet.

The other included Broadcast News BD and Santa Sangre BD. Santa Sangre shipped yesterday. I received a Delayed email for Broadcast News at 4:57am today and a Shipping notice for it at 1:46pm.

Now I just received a cancellation email for Videodrome, the 3rd title in my order. All 3 titles have now been canceled. Time to call again!

EDIT: They are closed now, due to the weather. Grrrrr...

Have they given you any reasons for the cancellations? You've got me worried about my orders now.

edit: Called and was told that it should ship out either tonight or in the morning. They're still there if you want to call kenbenobi. It took about 15 minutes for someone to pick up, but I just put my phone on speaker while I was on the computer.

The Ship to Home people are gone. The last time I called the regular number, they said I had to talk to someone in Ship to Home. You just called for an order status, so the regular people could probably help. But seeing as they canceled mine, I need to speak to the proper department so they can fix it. Of course, they haven't done a very good job of that so far... And no, they had no explanations for the cancellations whatsoever...

Well, I just got a "delayed" email for Let Me In. That was one of the 3 canceled items. Very strange... I'm still going to call them back this morning to see what is up with the other two items...

EDIT: The "ship-to-home" area is still closed due to the weather.

Saw this at blu-ray.com, there are 50 Blu-rays at bn.com at half off:
http://productsearch.barnesandnoble....F=1050&SZE=100

Titles include the first two of the Stieg Larsson trilogy, True Grit, and The African Queen. Some pretty good prices if you use a coupon and free shipping link (if still available).
