I guess it wasn't the exact same thing. I just checked my shipping email, and they charged me for the two things that shipped, and then an email the next day to inform me that the third item was 'cancelled'. Just checked the website and they no longer list it. Without the free one though, it's just no longer a good deal and not worth it to keep the other two.

Just curious if I'm going to have a problem taking these in store to return.

Yep. Made 2 orders this weekend (one small book and one dvd). The book shipped out with usps and arrived today. The dvd shipped out on tuesday and is still stuck in Kentucky (the originating state).

Last year, I purchased Band Of Outsiders on August 1 and received the thing on like Aug 27. This was shipped via dhl-usps. I guess I should be happy this time the damn tracking number they gave me actually works.

Stupid question but if I add a cheap book (there are a bunch of $1.99 cheap ones in the clearance section) will this ensure that I don't get the dhl-usps crap again?

Did you open any packages? If B&N botches one of my orders with a billing mistake I usually don't even bother to try and fix it with customer service anymore. I refuse delivery and send it right back for a refund. Once B&N receives the package they will issue a refund for what you paid minus any shipping charges if you paid for shipping. With free shipping you get all your money back. Also if it was sent by UPS you can use the tracking number to make sure it is returned to them. Unfortunately B&N customer service is a pain in the ass to deal with and it is easier to send merchandise back to avoid them if possible.

I haven't received the items yet; they should be here tomorrow. I watched my CC charges carefully after I received the cancellation and shipment emails because I suspected this might happen when they cancel one from a B2G1 offer.
Here's my dilemma: I don't really want to return the items because, even if I pay full price for only 2 items, it's still less than what I'll pay for the 2 items elsewhere. I'm going to have to deal with customer service.

I think you would be able to return it to a store if you have all the receipts. Might want to call them first. Also I think you only get store credit and not an actual refund. Maybe that's not a bad thing if you were going to buy anything during the Criterion sale that is coming soon.

My stores stopped doing that. I received a credit to my card with each of my last 4 store returns (to two different B&N locations). I'd say it's been that way since Christmas, at my stores...

Apparently they have changed the return policy since the last time I read it on the web site because it no longer says anything about giving store credit for returning an online purchase. But it is vague to what the refund policy is exactly, and basically tells you to call the store for more details. I guess they are letting the stores set their own rules. Next time I go to my local store I'm going to check to see if they are still giving store credit.

I remember a few years back, my store would do neither and I had to wait a few weeks to get a gift card in the mail!

I would rather have the gift card over store credit. At least you can use it online or at a store. Store credit is useless to me since I make most of my purchases online.

When they used to give me store credit, I then went to a different register and purchased a gift card in the amount of the store credit... Sometimes they say they don't think the register will allow it, but I ask them to try, and sure enough it worked...

The IBM link no longer gives a 10% discount. It has no discount whatsoever now... I hoped to use that one, since it was 10% off with no minimum free shipping. But not anymore... No discount appeared in my cart, and it doesn't mention a discount at the link anymore...

I never tried doing that at my local store. I usually use the store in my area to exchange damaged or defective merchandise I ordered online. The one time I did do a return for store credit I used it immediately on a purchase while I was there shopping.


The discount is only off the list price. You may not see a discount if whatever you were going to purchase was discounted over 10% off. On the first page I did mention it was off list and is why I did not highlight in red since it is virtually worthless. The discount is still mentioned at the link but it is buried in the middle.

I must be blind. I thought I read that entire thing, too. Yep, you're right, that is pretty worthless. Kinda funny how B&N gives other companies decent discounts, but IBM gets the shaft... They must have had too many server crashes with their IBM hardware. ;)

I don't see $5/$5/$5 coupons for existing members on the front page, am I overlooking them or will they be added later? My membership just expired but is only worth renewing if there are coupons to repeatedly exploit (granted YMMV) on the Criterion sale so I'm on the fence about re-upping. Thanks for any help.

There are two of them on the first page. The latest one was just activated this evening. Scroll down to the renewal section (near the bottom of the list) and you should find both of them them with online codes and printable store coupons.

No printable coupon is available. There is a store coupon as indicated by the fine print at the link, but it is mailed to select members. However you can use the online code. If you are looking for printable renewal store coupons there will probably be a few later in the month.

On the newest $5/$5/$5 coupon it states that this coupon may only be used with "each new, valid and current Barnes & Noble Membership purchased between April 26, 2010 and June 30, 2010. Offer is not valid for renewal Memberships". When I purchased my membership last fall, I was within those dates. Do these coupons really not work unless you've purchased your membership within the two aforementioned dates? If so, why are people renewing their memberships to use this coupon?
