Too much hassle just to get a cardboard box, IMO. I wonder if A&E would just sell me the box?

I believe the CE set is thinpacks, thats my reason for upgrading. But yeah, its probably not worth it if you already have the complete set. I only had the first 4.

Ah, thinpack. So yeah, $48 minus any eBay recovery just for a repackaged set of DVDs I already own... naaaah!

FWIW, I just got mine in the mail and it says it has a "New Exclusive Itnerview with Star Ioan Gruffudd"

I do like how this set takes up less space than the 4 discer did.

Urk! I just yesterday received KITH 3&4 from A&E's sale for $30 apiece. DDD would be both for $36.45. Hmm, so if I can keep my return shipping costs under $20 or so I'll still come out ahead....

Hello:

I have purchased the series "The Saint Megaset" and "The Secret Agent Megaset" as blind buys since I like spy series. I have read good reviews on these and just want to try them out. For those who own these sets, how do you like them? Is the series good?

I am considering buying the "The Avengers Emma Peel Set" and "The Prisoners Megaset". Are these good buys. I have read good reviews on these over at amazon. I have never seen any of these shows as I am only 30 and didn't grow up in the sixties. I heard the storyline in "The Prisoner" can be weird and boring and "The Avengers" can be hokey and corney by today's standard. Also, someone once remarked that the costumes and set designs for these shows are reflective of the pop art of the time using loud, bright colors with a kind of psychadelic look to it like what you see in Austin Powers. I am not sure if that would appeal to me. Anyone here have purchased these set and can give an opinion on the quality of these show???

I am also considering buying the dvd set "The Champions" but the price of $60 dollars is kind of steep for just 15 episodes. I was going to pair it with the Horatio Hornblower series. Is Horatio Hornblower good or just boring. I don't particularly care for dramas set in the Napoleonic era. My favorite period dramas would be in the 1920's to 1950's. Anyboyd have seen any of these sets and can comment on the entertainment value of these shows? Also, I notice that over at amazon UK, "Champion Complete Series" including all 30 episodes is for sale for 40 british pounds including shipping to USA, which works out to be about $75 dollars. Should I get this set instead?? If I get this, I would have to go out and buy a multiregion DVD player capable of converting PAL to NTSC. The only drawback would be that I can not watch overseas or region 2 DVD on my Dell laptop, which I do a lot on my travels on the road. Anyone know when A&E will release the other 15 episodes of "The Champion"???

Also, anyone knows when they will release the following british show in region I
1. Family at War
2. Sam
3.A Boat Came Sailing In
4.A Man Came Riding on a Horse

I saw today the "A&E Romance collection set 1" for only $60 over at ebay. It is brand new with free shipping and contains 8 miniseries. Does anyone own this set and did you like it?

Well, FeelingGreat, The Saint, Secret Agent, The Avengers and The Prisoner are generally considered the best of all the various spy series to have come out of the UK in the 60s. I'm only 34 but was exposed to The Avengers when I was around 12 or 13 and was immediately hooked, and this led me toward the other series.

The Champions has a sort of Batman-y, comic-strip feel to it at times, though it can still be great fun. I think it's highly unlikely that A&E will release the remaining 15 episodes in the US, though, as it's been quite some time since the first set. General consensus (sp?) among fans of these types of series is that this is one of the weakest.

If you're looking at amazon UK regarding The Champions, you should know that they automatically deduct 15% from the price of all DVDs shipped outside Europe. It's VAT (value added tax) and supposedly only UK residents pay it. (I only know of two other UK on-line retailers that remove it, though.) With this in mind, this set will cost around US$63 before shipping if bought from amazon UK... Shipping is GBP3.08 for the first item BTW, or around $5.70.

You can get a decent all-region player for around $50 if you look around. I've got two Philips players, DVP642 and the newer DVP3040. A quick Google search will turn up how to make them all region.

Hope all this helps!

That is a fantastic collection and a great price for it. I would guess judging by your likes though, you might find it a little boring.

First off, thanks for the help with my Emma Peel question regarding the difference between the sets (megaset vs. collectors). So now that I want to invest in the Megaset (with the bonus dvd) of course, as my luck would have it, DDD is out. How long does it take before they get things in again? Would it be worth it for me to just go ahead and place my order, or should I just wait it out and hope that I can get it for the sale everyone's waiting for? Thanks!

Well, base on information from the amazon website, the collector's edition contains the bonus DVD with the 3 lost episodes and some other stuff too. Aparently the Avenger Emma Peel Megaset does not contain this bonus DVD and is actually more expensive. Not sure why. The Collector's edition apparently is only released this year. If you already own the Emma Peel Avenger Megaset, you can buy the bonus DVD separately to be complete.

Just a strong recommendation for The Prisoner, in it's two megaset forms. What Patrick McGoohan did was take a pretty straightforward though exceptionally well made series in Danger Man (aka Secret Agent) and throw it for an utterly unprecedented, somewhat surreal and incredibly intelligent and fascinating turn. The Prisoner *is* bizarre at times but it's the best, most thought-provoking kind of bizarre. I cannot possibly recommend it more highly.

Hi,

I am considering buying the DVD "A Year in Provence" and "Mr. Bean-The Complete Bean" from this current sale. Anyone out there seen any of these and can comment on the entertainment value??

I was thinking of buying "The Champion" but after Chris-K said it has that cartoonish feel like the Batman series of the sixties, I figure it must be corny and stupid.

I am thinking of getting the miniseries "The Flame Trees of Thika". I have read mixed reviews on this. Some say it is boring, others say it is good. Anyone seen this yet and can comment please.

Well, I got the Emma Peel Set and the Prisoner Megaset together for $109.00. The Emma Peel set has 51 episodes so the approximate breakdown is that it cost $65 and the Prisoner Megaset cost $45 with free shipping for both so I guess the price is not too bad. Amazon UK is selling the prisoner set for 60 british pounds, which is more expensive.

Ah, but you can get the Australian Prisoner set from www.jbhifionline.com.au for around $US50 shipped, and it's R0...

Anyone who likes ITC series should look at this site for a great sale on boxed sets, all of which are R0 and have lots of nice extras. Even though the site says the discs are R4, they are in fact R0. (I've got Department S and Man in a Suitcase from Australia and Umbrella, the company that puts them out, knows what they're doing.)

Hey Chris-K, thanks for the information. I went to that site and I assume all listed prices there are in Australian currency but I notice all the DVD's are Region 4, not Region 0. Is Region 4 and Region 0 the same thing???

If you're looking at the sale page with The Saint and The Prisoner, et al, all those discs are actually R0. The prices are in Australian dollars, but with the current exchange rate, and adding postage for one set, the price comes to Au$67.98, which by a nice co-incidence, is around US$50.

Australia is part of R4, and uses PAL. Remember, region codes are optional, and some manufacturers leave them off. (I'm told A&E does too on certain of its titles.) If you've got a computer DVD player, these'll play no problem.

(I've tested a few Umbrella discs on my R1-only JVC VCR/DVD recorder and they play BTW so rest assured all these titles in the promotion are indeed R0.)

Hey Chris-K and animatedude, thanks for the information

I will really have to consider sites like play.com in the future for future purchases if they ever decide to ship to USA.

That australian site isn't too bad. On this site, they have "Return of the Saint" on 7 DVD for $50 Australian dollars working out to be $37.90 US dollars, which isn't too bad. Has anyone seen this series and is it good and worth buying? It is region 0 btw but in PAL. I guess you would need that converter from NTSC to PAL.

If you like Peter Mayle's books you'll like "A Year in Provence". Well filmed with the same gentle humor. Recommended.

I've got Return of the Saint on order from that site. Ian Ogilvy is supposedly a good Saint, though I've never seen an episode before. One thing Return has in its favor is that some episodes were actually filmed where they take place, as opposed to the stock footage the Roger Moore series tended to use for its "exotic" locations. (Though the very second episode, from 1962, had location filming in Rome -- you actually see Roger Moore walking near the Colluseum.)

If you get an all-region player, chances are it'll convert PAL to NTSC. These Aussie discs have no region code, so they'll play on your Dell laptop no problem (computers don't care about PAL or NTSC...)

This page right here... http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/dvds/id/73373 ...shows they're Region 0. Well, it says "REGION: All regions", but that would be R0.

AUS$49.98 + AUS$12.00 shipping = AUS$61.98 = US$47.0026 (according to www.xe.xom/ucc on 10/21/06.) Not a bad price if I didn't already have the R2 set.

For what it's worth, my wife & I used to stay up late to watch RETURN OF THE SAINT when it aired late Friday nights in the U.S. during the late 70's. We really enjoyed the new Saint (& I like Roger Moore, too, even though I hate his Bond). Of course, it might seem dated today, but we still like New Avengers and other British series from that "big hair" era.
