Yeah, okay, I will take your advice. I only bought season 1 and have not even finished it yet, but for $18.22 each, I guess I will go ahead and get seasons 2 and 3 (but I don't have another title of that price to get season 4 for half price).

Thanks, I picked it up at A & E for 31.98, free shipping. There was nothing else I really wanted at DDD so this was a better deal for me.

I ordered KITH 3 and 4... Might get Animated Bean sets 2 and 3. For $9.10 each, those aren't bad...

When I got the email about this sale, I said "Oh no, not another one." Thankfully, there's nothing I really need in this one. Danger Mouse Seasons 5 and 6 and Kids in the Hall Seasons 3 and 4 are eventual buys, but not today!

remember that the Homicide complete collection streets next month, in time for the 20% sale. it's $197 right now at DDD and comes with the three LAO eps and the movie plus all the seasons. with the sale price it would come in at around $160, less than buying all seasons on this sale, with the added bonus of all the extras

Any comments on UFO or Space:1999? Those are the only things that seriously interest me here.

If I didn't already own "The Prisoner" I'd pick that up and get UFO as a freebie.

I think I already have all of the A&E discs I really want (Prisoner, Python, Neverwhere) so I can sit this one out.

My order was Emma Peel mega set and Prisoners mega set, both on my wish list for years. Okay, you say I didn't maximize my savings. But, it works out like this: total both regular prices, subtract 20% (as if THAT sale). The final price ($109) is 30% below THAT price - or a straight 44% discount. Pluss the price of Prisoner set appears to be way below everyone else based on DVDPRICESEARCH comparisons (which doesn't show DDD for some reason for this title). Price break coming, maybe, but A&E has each at full retail!! The Avengers set price is comparable or better than other sites. Seems to me it's still an awesome bargain.

UFO has been named as the strongest "pure" sci-fi series ever to come out of the UK (as opposed to the BBC type of science fantasy like Doctor Who. Blake's 7, etc.) The transfers are spotless, and it's got model work by Derek Meddings, who also worked on many a Bond film and the Christopher Reeve Superman films.

The A&E Space: 1999 depends on if you like the series or not, as it's got its detractors and its arch supporters. The transfers on the first season are just OK, with quite a bit of edge enhancement, etc., season two's are cleaner.

I'd recommend going to www.fanderson.org.uk and following some of its links to fan sites about each series...

NB There is a season one boxed set in Region 2 that has new transfers made from HD versions of the original 35mm elements. I haven't seen it, but it's supposed to be excellent. (No sign of a new season two set in R2 though.)

Profiler Seasons 1 & 2 for me. Still blows CSI away IMO.

I'd really love some of those megasets (The Prisoner is the only one I have), but even with the sale, A&E's prices are too rich for my blood. Which is probably a good thing since I've barely cracked into the twenty-four films I bought during the Paramount sale, plus I still have a few unwatched boxsets from the Kino and Anchor Bay sales, plus I'm only two discs into the Complete Twilight Zone, plus the big year end sales are right around the corner, including the Big One.

So I'll probably just get Danger Mouse.

While I agree that the quality is spotty, I wouldn't pass this excellent series up because of that. The image is definitely watchable. The tapes were ignored for decades and this is the best they'll probably ever look.

Erm, videophile, take a look at www.updown.org.uk for comparison screengrabs between the A&E versions and the various R2 versions out there. I've got the original UK R2s of series 3 - 5 and the picture quality, while not perfect, is quite a bit better than the generally horrible A&E transfers.

There will be a complete 21-disc set coming out in the UK before the end of the year.

A&E is releasing few new megasets.
Homicide DVD Megaset (Series 1 - 7) 35 DVD(s) / 97 Hrs 34 Min $300
The Kids In The Hall: Complete Series DVD Megaset 20 DVD(s) / 2525+ Minutes $239.95

I am waiting for megaset for DR. QUINN, MEDICINE WOMAN for affordable price ($120). Presently they have insane prices.

videophile:
I may check the european (uk) version of 'UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS-COMPLETE SERIES' they are releasing in nov 2006. It is around 90 pounds (bit expensive).

I stand corrected. Thanks for the info Chris, I didn't know the R2 releases looked so much better. Guess I should save up for the UK complete set.

To everyone interested in the R2 version of Upstairs, Downstairs: unless you really, really want it, wait a few months after its initial release, as the vast majority of the titles released by the company releasing it, Network -- see www.networkdvd.co.uk -- go on sale at most of the UK on-line retailers about 4 or so months after initial release. Take a look at some of the titles on that website, then look at their prices at, say, amazon.co.uk and you'll see what I mean.

(I've got loads of Network stuff as they tend to cater for lovers of older, semi- and not-so- obscure UK television, older ITC series like Gideon's Way, The Baron, the Richard Greene Robin Hood, Strange Report, as well as better known stuff like The Saint and The Persuaders!)

I was thinking of getting The Prisoner and UFO, but I suddenly became concerned about framerate and resolution.

Are these simply PAL -> NTSC conversions, with frames being extrapolated (or interlaced, etc), and resolution compressed? I don't care about the resolution very much, but I very much do care about interlacing. Do DVD players know I'm putting in a "previously-PAL, but now NTSC" disc, and de-interlace them for me? I'm confused!

Wouldn't it be better to get the original PAL version??

I'm afraid to buy these potentially-degraded versions.

Y'know, paying $48.61 to DDD (or $31.98 to A&E) just to get the upgraded Hornblower box doesn't seem like it'd be worth it, even if I could recoup the cost of the upgrade by selling my opened DVDs on eBay. Too much hassle just to get a cardboard box, IMO. I wonder if A&E would just sell me the box?

Thanks, I'll go grab a copy of The American Revolution from A&E and skip the Hornblower upgrade.

Edited to add...
I see they've got Invasion: Earth and Monty Python Live! both on clearance for $9. That's more than 20% off DDD's price, and cheaper than anywhere else (according to DVDPS), so I'm grabbing them also. Sorry to hijack this into an A&E.com thread.

Now, to go find a copy of Emma Peel DVD #17.....
