Big Lots update
#676
I *finally* got "Batman: The Complete 1943 Movie Serial Collection" for $3 today at BL! I was just about to bite on the DD sale and pick one up when I decided to give BL one more try. Of course it cost me $30 in after-Christmas sale items my wife picked up while I was looking over the DVD selections...

Others they had were one volume each of the following (don't remember the volume numbers): Outlaw Star, Ryvius, Fantastic Children, Scry-d (I think there were three different ones), SD Gundam, a few Love Hina specials, and Kaze no Yojimbo.

The Tylersville Road store did come through on a couple of things. I finally found the Gundam movie Char's Counterattack, and they also had Blue Submarine No. 6: Special Edition (a 3-disc set containing the complete unedited series) for $3. Reviews aren't great, but I couldn't pass up getting an entire series for $3.
According to the anime thread, the Blue Submarine movie has also been spotted at $3, but I have yet to see it around here. If anyone finds it, let me know.

Just picked up Starhunter(15 episodes, 2 discs) starring Michael Pare' for $4.00. Generally speaking, anything he's in is pretty stinky but I liked Streets of Fire so much that I keep waiting for him to do something good again. This series looks like it's about a sci-fi/futuristic style bounty hunter. We'll see.

if you wind up liking this series, this set is only half of the series, there is a better box set available with the full series plus bonus features, you can prob find it on amazon for about 20 bucks.

I noticed that 2 of the 3 area stores seemed to have been restocked this week, one was really heavy on Anime, and the other one was mainly movies. The one with just movies had $3 titles (most of which I've seen before) and a new bunch marked $4.90 is this a new price point?
I missed D.E.B.S. back in December, I thought I picked it up but went back through the bags and must have skipped it. Is it still around anywhere?

And 4.90 appeared as a price point a few weeks ago.

I made it out this weekend to one of my local biglots and noticed the same thing on the anime. I thought it strange as this biglots has hardly ever had any anime stuff in the past and I walked in and there was like 2 1/2 shelves of anime! I will be going back over there in the next day or 2 as well as hitting one or two other local ones so I can try and help anyone out looking for some certain titles if I can. I myself am still hunting for the 40's batman serial others have found.

Darn! I had a copy then returned it after I read the awful reviews of it...guess I should've held onto it for someone.

It's actually quite good and a lot of fun!
Yes, there is no Batmobile (it's the Wayne sedan), it is very un-PC (based on stereotypes of the Japanese villain... however, we *were* at war during those years and propaganda plays a major role here), Batman is an operative for the U.S. Government (very un-Batman like, but again the war thing), and it's somewhat campy. BUT... it *is* a serial made in the early 40s. These were aimed at a 10-13 year old male audience. The cliff-hangers are more plausible, better explained and executed than most serials I've seen. Lots of action sequences with Batman and Robin frequently getting the crap knocked out of them (but always coming out on top in the end). The costumes are actually pretty good considering the year and budget for these things. The BatCave is a hoot! The musical score is very good and atmospheric with the opening credits having the best. The video and audio are quite good for a serial from the 40s. If you like serials it's a must-see. For $3 there is quite a bit of entertainment value and an excellent "blind buy".

I am going tonight so if you get a chance send me your current want list and I will look. I am sure we can work out something as I do like to help others out on here as I have been helped in the past.

I didn't like the Batman serial collection for anyone that wants a different opinion. I found it racist, out-dated, and far too campy (for my tastes). I had a friend over, who happens to be Asian, and without even knowing what it was going to be like I put on the first disc to check it out. He couldn't believe they still sell this stuff even though it is obviously offensive and outdated. I'm not trying to say you WONT enjoy it. You very well might... but that is my opinion on it. I wasn't a fan of the old Batman TV series anyway so It might appeal to fans of that show. I wouldn't know. However, as a big Batman Comic Book fan (Frank Miller's work), Batman: TAS, and Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan's film adaptations, I was disappointed.

No sign of a Batman for Neil yet, but I did find Wolf's Rain 4 for myself. I'll be set once I find Volume 1 and the OVA (which I think is listed as Volume 7 on the security sticker?).
