Very nice sale. I finally picked up

ALI-FEAR EATS THE SOUL
TOKYO STORY (CRITERION)(SE)

I've been wanting to pick these up for quite some time.

Thanks OP for the heads up.

According to DVDCompare all R1 versions of this film have a brief cut.

Both GREAT films. Two of my top Criterions. I really need to pick them up myself.

Thanks, OP! I'm wondering whether the sale ends 4/6 (site) or 4/10 (DDD post). I guess I'll go with the former just to be safe. Uuugh, I wish I had more money. I'm kinda spent at the moment. Bad timing on my part! Hopefully I'll be able to scrounge up something!

yep. it's only 11.xx right now at DDD (comes out next week I think) and has a commentary, anamorphic, etc.

Is the CHARADE the 16x9 version or the old letterboxed one?

Only 11.69 at DDD. Mine shipped 3 or 4 days ago.

Can someone say "jealous"? Good grief. If his mom wants to get him 32 DVDs for Xmas, more power to her!

Damn good question. So Criterion updated the transfer at some point but kept exactly the same cover? That seems pretty dim. If the site doesn't list it properly there is no way to tell.

Well, since Charade was OOP before they came out with the new transfer, I think it's safe to say that the ones for sale are all the new editions.

This is what I think, too. I doubt they carry the old version anymore, but if you're too worried to risk it, I'd e-mail them or wait.

I picked up:

A Woman Is a Woman and 3 Films by Louis Malle with some money my brother was holding for me via a PayPal transaction. Phew.

Thanks for the information. I'm certain that is a safe bet. However, I still think it was pretty stupid to keep the same cover as most of us don't know the release history of every film ever made. I have actually passed on buying this film several times as most sites do not list it as anamorphic.

I picked up the Louis Malle box since it was one I was holding until the next sale. Shame Mr. Arkadin is the only preorder in it, but hey, gift horses and all.

aup.
By "usually" do you mean the usual discount given on this title when DDD has Criterion sales, or the regular price DDD sells it for every day? Dvdpricesearch.com has its most recent price on the DVD (presumably from yesterday) at $28.79.

Not a huge discount, but it's still enough to make me want to buy.

I ordered it from DDD during the June 2005 20% off sale and got the 16x9 version. I think the old ones are long gone.

Thanks for the heads-up! I ordered "The Bad Sleep Well" for $17 shipped.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've been busy all day moving into a new apartment.
I'm sure I'll be sleeping pretty well myself here in a few minutes.

23.97 puts it at 40% off, which was the discount at the recent Digital Eyes, DVD Planet (and even DDD, if I am not mistaken) sale. Digital Eyes had additional coupons ($5 off $60, etc) and you could use your frequent buyer points. 40% is also what the rebate worked out to at the DDD 20% off sales. That is what I meant by "usual". If you want it right now, that is a good price, of course, but it is not discounted as much as many other titles, which are 45% off.

aup.

To the guy asking about Charade... I also got it last summer from DDD, and it was definitely the newer, anamorphic release - so order w/o fear.

All film lovers who have $44 at their disposal need to buy 3 Films by Louis Malle. It's pretty much imperative.

Judging by my dvd list, do you think I'll like these films?

I also did enjoy french films like Francois Truffaut's Adventures of Antoine Doinel and Kieslowski's Three Colors Trilogy.

I also like Vittorio De Sica...

I also hate Fellini.

Not sure how these films/directors would relate to Malle but just listing a few I enjoyed that I don't own.

anyone know how the prices of Fanny and Alexander 5D, 32.97, and Au Hasard Balthazar, 16.47, compare to the other sales? I don't think i've seen a low-tier criterion go for that cheap

Lower-tier Criterions, on average, go for about $17.25 or so during the 20% off sale. I don't remember what Fanny and Alexander would be priced at off the top of my head.
