It ain't worth driving if you are only looking for DVD deals. Xbox 360's accessories may be some good candicates. Think of the gas you are gonna consume. I've browsed the entire DVD area plus the electronics but couldn't find anything worth picking at my local closing SamGoody. Like others said, their so-called 20% off is still much higher than the regular price of stores like Walmart, Best Buy, etc. I bet there'll be at least 80% of DVDs still there when the closing day comes if they don't offer at least 50% off sticker price in the clearance. You might get lucky if you find an OOP titles but who knows. Maybe you should give them a call before you come over.

The Sam Goody and two Suncoasts in my neighborhood that are closing are a bit out of the way. I'd rather wait for better discount, but are all the stores going to start increasing discounts around the same time?

Damn, I always miss out on the sales like this!
Tsk, tsk, I can't believe you would be so callous as to wish for many others to lose their jobs simply so you could benefit from a clearance sale.

Don't you realize that in order for these laid-off employees to receive the same stellar pay they were used to at Sam Goody/Suncoast, they would have to scour the entire mall or at least go next door to Hot Topic and get the same dime-a-dozen, minimum wage, service industry pay? I accept your apology in advance.

Probably. But in this day and age, when a store goes out of business it is rare for the stock to remain in the store to be sold at those higher discounts. What usually happens is that a company will buy out large quantities of their stock. So by the time there are any significant percentage discounts, most if not all of the merchandise is already gone.

The last time I can remember a "true" going-out-of-business sale was about 10-15 years ago. The K-Mart in Kingston, NY was closing and sales started at 10% and every few days went up another 10%. The day before their last day, 90% discounts on everything... and they still had a fair amount of merchandise left. On their last day, it as $5 a cart-full. Whatever you could fit in a cart. Good times. LOL

If only they have carts at Suncoast. I'd pay even $10 to fill a cart there!!!

Isn't Suncoast owned by Best Buy?

not for years - best buy sold musicland to an independant investor due to lack of profit.

I have rarely found any good bargains at going out of business sales. The discounts are off of list price so unless the discount is over 30% you can probably do better at Amazon or DDD .

Both the Suncoast and the Sam Goody in my local mall are closing. I stopped by the Suncoast and talked to one of the employees on Saturday. He said a lot of the employees were hiding merchandise they want for when the discount goes up. Can't say I blame them. If they're about to be jobless, they may as well get something out of it.

I think it depends what you're looking for. A couple years back, a Sam Goody near where I was living went out. Their DVD selection wasn't so hot, but they had tons of great cds left, even when the discount got as high as 90%. All the current top 40 type of artists were gone, but there were tons of indie and back catalog releases going for a couple bucks. Of course, given the forum this is in, I guess we're talking more about bargains to be had on their dvds...

Both Suncoast and Sam Goody are closing at the mall I go to all the time. It's a shame for the people who work there (the same ones, at Suncoast anyway, have been there a long time)...

There is still a Sam Goody remaining open at a mall across town... lucked out there as I have $25 in reward certificates coming.

All I can say is that during Media Play's close-out sale, I came away with a LOT of good deals. In terms of mainstream stuff, YES---the racks were largely devoid of decent stuff. But I loaded up on a ton of good cult films---Media Blasters, Elite, No Shame, Blue Underground, Image/Something Weird, and Synapse catalog releases took up the majority of my total spending. I found a nice selection of odd stuff, such as some Takashi Miike films, several of the non-Godzilla Toho films directed by Ishiro Honda (MATANGO, WOW!) and a few Elite titles that aren't included in the current DDD sale (Thirst, Strange Behavior, Patrick)

That being said, these lil' mall stores definitely do not have the range of titles of a Media Play. At least not Sam Goody...there aren't any Suncoasts near me any more, the last one closed over 5 years ago. But I'll make a trip out there once I hear the discount is more than 25-30%, and hope for the best.

They closed the store here about 10 years ago. I remember it used to be Licorice Pizza before that.

1 of the 2 stores in the Pacific View Mall is closing, they have both a Sam Goody and Suncoast, makes sense, Suncoast is always packed with people and Sam is a ghost town...

Suncoast is over-priced. 20% off of MSRP is still more than Best buy.

During the Media Play meltdown, even at 40% off, a lot of stuff was more than I was willing to pay, but toward the end, CDs were about ~$5 so I blind-bought a bunch of stuff.

Of course, this is all because I extended my Replay Rewards membership until late 2007. They're shutting down just to screw me.

I made out pretty good on Media Play as well. You just have to discipline yourself, set a price your willing to pay and wait it out.

just visited the suncoast and same goody's in paramus nj - as reported earlier, all cd's and dvd's were 20% their listed price, which in almost all cases was MSRP - so no warm deals whatsoever... yet - however there was still pretty much full normal inventory sans new releases from the past couple of weeks. from looking at the prices - the discount is going to have to hit at least 50% before anything becomes a warm deal.

I used to buy a lot of movies from them when I was collecting VHS, but I found them to be way too expensive with their dvds. Much cheaper to go to Walmart. You had to figure all these small places would go the way of the dodo bird with giants like Walmart undercutting their prices.

Does anyone have a timetable for the increased discounts? ie. when does 30% discount kick in.

I dropped by the local Sam Goody and I could've sworn that they raised the prices.

I made friends with a few of the Media Play employees, where I shopped regularly for years because they would usually price match the ads I brought in. Anyway, they said that there was an option to extend a customer's Replay membership for 2 years for only 1 cent. It was used to smooth things over when a shopper received bad customer service. I ended up with my Replay membership extended until mid-2009.

In another thread, someone posted that you could call the 800-Replay # and request a refund. Since all the Media Plays and Suncoasts are closing in my city, I called...

A refund check for $25.98 for my remaining 3+ years is on the way in 6-8 weeks.

I feel dirty

You never know what you might find. A few months back, I found 2 OOP titles I had been looking for for about 1 year: Art of Illusion: 100 Years of Special Effects and U-Boats documentary. For those, alittle off of MSRP is worth it, since I would be paying full price anyway or more. As it was IIRC, I had some Replay certs to use on them, so life was good

The thing was I was shocked to find them since at a couple of their other stores I asked about them and looking them up on the store computer showed them as OOP and not available even to order.

You just never know. So I would take 20% on things like these any day.
