Interesting. This is a bit off topic, but I have noticed that in the Wal-Mart I shop at, there's very much an unspoken courtesy about digging through the bin. The crowd is often racially diverse, and perhaps we wouldn't even be able to effectively communicate verbally. But nobody, nobody throws DVDs into a hole that another bin diver is creating. If a cave-in happens accidentally, someone usually apologizes.

Perhaps I don't shop at peak hours when the mob might be more unruly. But that's been my experience.

My nearest WalMart has a 4 sided upright display which makes it easy to browse through all the titles in just a few minutes. When I'm at other stores now that only have a dump bin I glance at the titles on the top and I'm through. It just isn't worth the effort trying to find anything in one of those.

I'm always afraid if I dig too deep in those bins, I'll find the dead body of some poor bastard who got crushed in a DVD cave-in...

Funny, I've always met nice folks at the dump bin. I was once looking for a particular title and this guy and his girlfriend looked thru one half of the bin for me while I rummaged the other side. I have been able to help out others looking for a bargain at times also. Half the time I end up talking dvd's with the other movie fans. They are there for the same reason as us after all. I do hate going through bins when others post they have shelves or displays at their stores. Oh well, they are talking about building two super Walmarts and one Sams club at the opposite sides of the nearest town, maybe they will be nicer then the current pit.

That sounds a lot like the one I go to. Last time I was at the dump bin we were all looking out for titles for each other, and two of us teamed up to do some serious digging. It was kinda fun.

I did this yesterday with a guy who was rummaging at the same time. We both had one specific title we were searching for. We had a giant pit in the middle that was about 70% deep, with all the other discs teetering around the outer edge making walls. We'd hold the edge with one hand and dig with the other. Eventually our chests hurt from leaning over the metal bin sides, and the impending cave-in happened. We laughed hard at our stupidity. People stared. What good holiday fun!

The best time to do this is to go during the week at an odd hour. Take a shopping cart with you and throw all the stuff you don't want in the cart. Makes it tons easier to find the stuff and you don't have the cave-ins.

And don't forget your spelunking helmet with the light on the front of it.

I stopped in yesterday and the remnants of this batch were all in the dump bin now.

If youre a bargain bin digger. just a suggestion, try bringing in an empty shopping cart. Its faster if you dump all unwanted searches there than piling it up again at the other corner of a bin.

I picked up:

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
The Shining (remastered)
Eyes Wide Shut
Vacation 20th Anniversary
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I was kinda angry because on TMNT the fucking security tag thing that's supposed to be on the inside case was on the DVD itself! At least it was on the Full Screen side of the disc. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

I do as well. I think some people have realized that this is a really good idea - the past few times I have been to the bin, there has been one or two carts already overflowing with dvds.

Now if a guy and girl on the rebound flourished a romance from a meeting at the dump bin it would give it a whole new meaning. The dump bin has always been a place to chat with others and talk about our collections, likes/dislikes and number of dvds we have. I'm always down for helping someone find a movie they're looking for and informing those who don't have a chance finding a particular title. The other night in the checkout line the lady right in front of us was going to buy The Brother's Grimm that she ahd picked up from the dump bin. She thought it was going to be only 5.50. I informed her of what she was really going to spend as well as my honest opinion of the movie and she prompty put it back.

I think the flight of the phoenix was probably just thrown in their by someone, don't see that being 5.50 its a fairly new movie.

I found a copy of the new 2-disc Star Trek Nemesis in the $5.50 bin. But it was not that price. Too bad, that's about the only way I'd double-dip on that one.

As for conversations at the dump bin ... I was at one recently where two other people were chatting about the bin. I tried to join in with a quick comment... and I was completely ignored. How 'wude!

Regarding the security tag on the disc... I've never seen that, but that would be an automatic return in my book. That's just messed up.

I think you've got yourself a screenplay. I can see Jack Black, or maybe Adam Sandler as the male lead. But who for the female?

(Sorry, this has gone far afield. Now back to the dump bin.)
