Especially when it comes to anime. I'm not a fan of the genre, but I know many people that are, and how low prices for anime are as rare as low prices for sci-fi TV on DVD sets (the "screw the geek" factor). Despite the major price reduction, I'd say that half the DVD's available at the Taylor store were anime. If that stuff was even half-way decent, it should have been bought up by now.

Nice...I've seen multiple copies of it at the three Cincinnati area locations, but keep putting it off. I did pick up a Griffin PowerMate for $19 at the Western Hills location.

All three stores have "FINAL 10 DAYS" signs in the windows, but I don't know what the exact closing dates are. It's mostly anime at all of them, although there are still loads of the Seinfeld 5 & 6 gift sets. 60% off would put it around $45, which I'm considering.

:(

Actually, it's not animated. It's a series of live action shorts about a supposed "all-american family". The strange thing is that the characters aren't played by actors, but are posed mannequins.

To me, they are really creepy because they have perfect skin, smiles, eyes, clothes, etc.

Here's a pic of the funny creepiness:

It reminds me of that creepy / crappy look that Polar Express had.

I went a bit overboard over the past week...visited three stores in the Charlotte NC area, and got a LOT of cult, horror, and Asian cinema---at 50 or 60% off, I just couldn't resist scooping up a lot of stuff I'd read about, wanted but couldn't justify buying at a higher price, etc...

If you live in the region, the Gastonia location still had a moderate inventory, but the Matthews and South Blvd. stores are wiped out pretty much. I couldn't believe how many copies of COSBY SHOW were at the Gastonia location---100 would be a conservative estimate. Arseloads of anime, I almost wonder their vast, stagnant inventory in that area alone didn't drive them under. Thank god I'm not an anime freak, or I would have spent even more money.

Highlights of my gatherings:

Beast from 20,000 Fathoms
Warning Shot
Evil Dead Trap
Battlefield Baseball
Newsfront
Deadly Outlaw Rekka
One Missed Call
Aliens From The Deep
The Bad Seed ('56)
A Bell From Hell
Big Alligator River
Black Scorpion
Blood Feast 2 Unrated
Devil Came From Akasava
Dogora
Earth Vs The Flying Saucers
Gappa: The Triphibian Monster
Man From Deep River
Matango: Attack of The Mushroom People
Syndicate Sadists
Touch Of Death
Ghastly Ones / Seeds Of Sin
Patrick
Strange Behavior
Thirst
Syngenor
Love: The Forever Changes Concert
The Pretty Things: SF Sorrow Live at Abbey Road
Hour Of The Wolf (the old WS version that was recalled, used)
Shame (ditto)

I really enjoyed this bargain-binge because I managed to grab a lot of Media Blasters, Image, and Elite Entertainment titles at really nice prices. Averaged out to a bit over 7 dollars a film...a lot of titles I'd seen time and time again in the store, but passed on because their prices were just too steep. Not this time...but the guilt will settle in tomorrow.

I went back yesterday to the Gratiot store...not much left. They had a bunch of books though...3 for $10 I think (Hardcover Bargain)

I did get THE SURE THING for $5.xx. But my mom gave me a $6 Reward coupon, so it was free. I did see that creepy FUCCONS disc, but I passed. I think it was really cheap too...oh well. The only notable movies they had were The Island, The Ring 2, Ringu2...that was about it.

Well, good thing we didn't go.. we were debating on it Saturday, but got held up on a project and afterwards didn't feel like going.

So when is their offical last day... Friday or Saturday?

printerati 01-17-06 07:17 PM

Cincinnati Mills is as good as closed. There's really nothing left.

Western Hills fares a bit better. I picked up Seinfeld season 5 for $18.39, and took a chance on the Fuccons disc since I didn't think it could be that bad for $2.39.

I was wrong.

Don Houston's review on this site is pretty much dead-on. Picking it up on clearance is cheaper than the rental he recommends, at least.

I posted about that last week somewhere above. An employee at the 15 & Gratiot store said they had gotten in remaining stuff from the Ann Arbor store because it had closed already.

Any final price drops this week? I may stop there on the way home today one final time.

Snowmaker 01-18-06 06:04 PM

Today was the first time in 6 consecutive weeks that I walked out empty-handed.

All the newer DVDs were now gone, being 60% off.

printerati 01-18-06 07:10 PM

I overheard a staff member at the Florence, KY store tell a customer that "everything" will be 90% off starting Saturday. Sunday looks to be the final day for all three Cincinnati area stores.

CD sections are a hopeless mess at all three stores, but there are still a few desirable DVD titles at Florence, which I'm hoping to get for $1.80-$2.80 on Saturday morning.

At $0.60, I might even recommend The Fuccons, just for the experience. ;)

I saw 2 of that DVD at my store. What the hell is it?

SkyDog 01-18-06 11:25 PM

The books that are back at $3 are actually somehow considered fixtures, so the 10% extra charge applies and actually makes them $3.30. I just went to one of my two local stores (Shoppingtown Mall - Dewitt, NY) and walked out without any DVDs. I did get a couple of T-Shirts, a handful of magazines (All magazines are 2 for $1), a PC strategy guide for Half-Life 2 (All strategy guides are $2.50) and a bunch of candy bars for less than $20 total.

I admit, the trailer actually makes it look passably entertaining.

Can anyone confirm the 90% final days sale, and also are the Michigan area stores open on Sunday?

Groucho 01-21-06 06:08 PM

I was in a Media Play today. Some things were 90% off, but DVDs were 70% off.

Was there even anything worth buying at 70% off left.

Groucho 01-21-06 06:52 PM

Not that I saw. Plenty of copies of Four Brothers (the only thing I really recognized).

jet 01-21-06 07:16 PM

I got Seinfeld seasons 5&6 w/puffy shirt in Enfield CT store yesterday, 1/20 for $35. They still had one copy.

yourlocalcinema 01-21-06 07:57 PM

Not much other than Anime and a very small Music selection at the Enfield, CT store, but I did manage to find one copy of "Who Are The Debolts?", the 1978 Oscar winner for Best Documentary. Came out to $7.49. :)

jet 01-21-06 09:05 PM

The Seinfeld sets weren't with the dvds. There was an endcap over by some Halloween stuff. They were there.

sailor_moon 01-21-06 09:10 PM

Well, we boxed up the remaining stock today around 7:30 and locked the doors. The Taylor Media Play is no more.

:( :rip:

Snowmaker 01-21-06 10:26 PM

Well, they got enough of my money in the last 6 weeks. Kind of a relief that its over.

This ended up not being the case at the Florence store after all. DVD's were 70%, CD's were 80%. We spent about $70 on six DVD's and close to 20 CD's and SACD's. Saturday was it for Florence; Western Hills and Cincinnati Mills closed today.

I guess I should have grabbed the Seinfeld set at 60% off; there were none left by the time the discount dropped to 70%.

asianxcore 01-22-06 10:37 PM

so are all Media Play stores officially closed now?

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 01:11 PM.
