Media Play Close-Out Bargains
If you happen to live near a Media Play, you may be able to find a few good deals in the Used Dvd Section. If you buy 7 or more used items (Dvd's, Cd's, or Games), you get 50% off the total price. Plus, they take 20% off the listed price BEFORE they take the 50% off since all Dvds (new and used) are 20% off due to them going out of business. I was able to pickup Deadwood Season 1, Best of Will Ferrell Volume 1 and 2, Best of Chris Farley, Capturing the Friedmans, Last Seduction, Terminator 3, and At Close Range for $49.95 after Taxes. They were all in great condition as well. I was very happy I checked it out last night. I just wished they had more HBO TV shows when I was there.

Any idea if the same discount is available at all stores? Also, do they tend to have pretty good used sections? We haven't had any here in Indy for years, but there are 3 in the Cinci area. With the 20% and 50% off, it might be worth the drive to stock up on some used boxsets and games if they tend to have a good selection.

I am not sure if the discount is the same, although I would imagine it is since all the stores nationwide are closing. As far as selection? That is totally YMMV. My store had a decent selection I suppose, but I never really shopped much at the place. I just decided to check it out since I heard it was closing. |
Wow, nice....maybe I'll check it out. I know I drove by and they had a big STORE CLOSING sign.
|
Just went by my local MP. They had the Ultimate Matrix Collection, w/Neo Bust for $29.79! Better than DDD after 20% discount. I picked up a set for myself. May go back for some Xmas gifts...

maxfisher, I will be visiting at least one of the locations this week, and I'll let you know what I find. I believe there are four Cincinnati area locations, if you include the Florence (northern Kentucky) store.

I only saw 20 percent off the things I was interested in. Most of the DVDs that weren't garbage were gone, but I made out nicely from the used CDs.
Also, let it be known that they've gone and put the MSRP on all new DVDs and CDs, so the 20 percent off does nothing. |
Yeah, I noticed that all of the $8.99 closeout videogames from a couple weeks back were now marked back up to their original price... making the 20% off price anything but a bargain.
Glad I picked up a few gthe other week. |
Any idea how long this is going on?
|
Probably until all the stores are closed.

I'm surprised they lasted this long. Every Media Play in my area is plagued with poor service and incredibly high prices.

The press release said sometime before the end of January. In fact, the best bargains won't really hit till after Christmas.

I will miss Media Play. We briefly had one in Cleveland but it didn't stay open very long. Whenever we visit the inlaws in New York, we'd stop at the MP in PA, which we did last month and will probably be the final time. :goodbye:

I just hope the discounts grow as time passes. They sure did have a LOT of adult DVD's.
I passed for now...nothing THAT great. Video Game Accessories for 20% off is decent (for 360 controllers or the wireless adaptor) |
Few deals at the Cincinnati Mills location. Used DVDs are 20% off, and some of the $9.99 used titles are marked 3/$25, so the final cost would be 3/$20 if you find three that you want, which isn't terrible.
All TV on DVD sets are still too high...there was a used copy of the complete Monty Python's Flying Circus for $119.99 before discount. :whofart: The Everybody Loves Raymond sets are marked at $41.99, and the 20% discount brings them down to about a dollar less than most places sell them for. The selection is still quite good, though. They said they won't be getting any new stock, but the new releases for 12/13 (e.g. the new Airplane! edition) are on the shelves. There is also a good selection of Criterion releases in the tiny "Foreign" section, but they are close to full MSRP. The new edition of The Wages Of Fear is $36.99 before discount, and the $29.59 final price is still over three bucks higher than DDD's regular price. Holiday decorations are 30% off. Paper products (like gift wrap), budget CD's, and karaoke CD's are 40% off. Electronics are 10% off. No chance of getting an XBOX 360 at any location, I am told. The only thing I cashed in on were Hi8 metal particle camcorder tapes. I needed a couple for tonight, and the $9.99 before 20% off wasn't a great price, but I didn't want to stop anywhere else. They rang up at $1.50, however, so I went back and purchased the remaining packs on the shelf. I didn't try my luck at any other type of blank media, but it's something to keep in mind. As mentioned above, there will be few DVD deals until the discount hits 40%. I may check the store near my house for more blank tapes, but I'm holding off on any software purchases for now. |
I stopped by the local one last night - not very many good deals on the dvds (with the 20% off). I asked an employee whether or not I could still get the additional 50% off, and he was pretty sure that had ended a little while ago. I was tempted to just grab 7 dvds and find out, but I was short on time. So my question to the OP is the following: Did the 50% off discount show up automatically at the register? Also, were there any signs indicating that an additional 50% off would be taken?

We drove down to the store on Monday. Found several items: Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas Poster for $7.19, the Anakin/Darth lenticular poster for $5.99, and a poster frame for $10.19, and Blood & Gold by Anne Rice for $0.00.
That's right, the book rang up that way and I didn't realize it till I got home. I'd return it so I can purchase it at the right price but they specifically told me that there would be NO returns. :) Anyway, I'd thought I'd pass that on. But as you know, YMMV. |
I went back today to scoop up some more CDs and browse more in-depth. Much to my surprise, all of my CDs rang up as 50 percent off. Since I didn't buy anything else, I don't know if other items would've done the same or even if the CDs should've gotten that discount. But if that's the case, there's some other things I wanna pick up before they close their doors. Those are the types of savings I was expecting when I heard about all of this.

Well they closed the one closed to me a few monthes ago Norwood (cincinnati) OH but there were no deals since everything was just getting transferred to the other locations but now all 3 of those locations we be closing. Doesn't shock me of course since dvds were so overpriced there but there had good deals on storage. Will be watching this thread to see when the real deals hit since i have $15 replay cert.
