This is why the 70's is my favorite period of comic books - especially the cover art!

I looked it up, the artists for that cover were Jack Burnley and Stan Kaye. I haven't heard of either of them, but they knocked it out of the park with that one.

Jack Burnley is pretty well-known to golden age collectors - especially Superman. He did a number of iconic covers, with the one below probably being his most well-known.

The other really cool Patriotic (wartime) cover was done by Fred Ray

Here's one that really caught my eye in 1975, and I still love it (and the issue)...

This is a great cover. I love the characters against a stark black background. And the artwork is excellent...

Wow. For a comic from 1947 that's really impressive. Great use of angles/perspective, nice display of action, and the use of color, as you noted, is great! The use of shadow and shading is also fantastic.

Though I used to look through the set of Gerber cover books constantly, I don't recall ever noticing, or making note of that one.
But yeah, not surprised it's Burnley. He was several cuts above most Golden Age artists. Very chiaroscuro, solid anatomy and staging.
Star-man, early Superman in Action comics, as well as the newspaper dailies for Supes and Batman as well as the Sunday's for the latter. Great artist.

I ordered that in the mail when it was released. I never read it beforehand. A few weeks later I found all the issues at one of my LCS for 35c each. Back then they would just stack the back issues without bags and boards in the corner collecting dust. I thought I got ripped off buying that reprint.
I read it was recently reissued with that same cover.
This story should have been included. A sort of epilogue to the entire story arc.

Lots and lots of great covers in here.
I learned to read with G.I. Joe comics and I always liked #53 with Snake Eyes and the Marvel border. Great issue, too.

I love most of the covers from Avengers in the issues numbered in the 100s range. They were always busy but fun. Always a lot happening with several characters.
