A bit before my time, but I've always sort of been fascinated by just how popular Planet of the Apes was back in the day. Five movies, a tv series, Mego toys.

The copyrights on that ad say 1976. Then, the next year, Star Wars hit, and everyone forgot about the apes. By the time I was old enough to notice things like that, POTA was just another old movie that got played on tv once in a blue moon. I can sort of recall seeing Escape from Planet of the Apes on tv as a late night creature feature on a local station, but I didn't see all five movies until someone marathoned them on cable a few years later.

Unless it was Disney, practically all movies were marketed to adults at the time of the original POTA films theatrical release. It depended on how liberal your parents were if you got to see them. Same with Bond. My dad would take me to see anything. Growing up I got to see all the Hammer, Vincent Price, Bond, etc. movies. None of my friends could. I use to tell them all about the movies afterward. I was 10 in 1968 when the first POTA was released, not until around age 13 in 1971 did I start taking friends with me to the drive-in with my dad to see all kinds of movies.
There was this conservative mindset among parents, a prejudice, against, comics, bubble gum cards, sct-fi, horror. You younger guys who were kids when Garbage Pail Kids cards were the rage may have witnessed this kind of parental attitude.. TV was a different story. Most merchandising was tied to TV shows. Parents seemed OK with that. Even then, I knew kids not allowed to watch Batman or Lost in Space. Just crap like Flipper, Lassie, Disney, etc.
It wasn't until the POTA tv series in 1974 that the merchandising began. Lunch box, model kits, figures. Followed in 1975 by the Saturday Morning cartoon and the theatrical films.

Luckily, I had liberal parents who wouldn't have batted an eye if I came home with a bloody disgusting pre-code horror comic at 7 years old.
Jaws was probably the big breakthrough in liberating younger kids from the oppression of conservative parents. It was too big a deal. Parents had to give in and take the kids.
I had dad take me to all kinds of movies, both indoor and drive-in. You just drive right up and go in. Except once. The Love Bug in 1969. Place was so packed they had cops out directing traffic in front of the entrance. It was a kid's movie. Double the audience of a POTA movie.

"Starting at 9:30"? I'm pretty sure Saturday morning cartoons started at 8:00 in the 70s, and maybe some syndicated stuff before that. Locally, Hilarious House of Frightenstein aired at 6am on Saturday mornings, usually a bit early for me but I tried to watch it, although according to my uncle he and his friends also often watched it after a very late night of partying. That would have been a fun show to watch when you were still half drunk and/or stoned. Before 6am I'm guessing it was a test pattern or maybe the farm report.

I remember having to suffer through Davey & Goliath if I woke up before 7am in my area for several years.

That's a 1967 ad from TV Guide. I'm guessing it's the north east and eastern time. I can't think of where else a local version of TV Guide covers broadcast area of five ABC affiliates. The start time should be 9:00.

I mostly remember some channels running locally syndicated cartoons (often aimed at very young children or even educational in nature) before the national broadcast schedule of network cartoons began each Saturday. Though some channels, like the local CBS affiliate, would run straight news programming before cartoons started. I guess they didn't think many school kids were up at 7 AM on a Saturday.

By the 1990s you could tell the block was shrinking and networks were already looking for alternate programming.

Some of those channels are UHF, I always assumed that the major networks mostly broadcasted on VHF channels (all the ones in the market closest to me did) but I guess that wasn't always the case.

Speaking of TV channels, am I the only freak who still remembers their local network call signs after all these years?
