Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

I recently subscribed to Amazon's Comixology and have enjoyed it so far. For only 6 bucks a month, I get to check out a lot of comics I would have normally never seen or read.

I just hate their search function. It is quite poor. Why can't they just make it easy to search everything available in the subscription? And if you look at something and go back, it never saves your place and takes you right back to the start. Ugh!

Also, you can use the code SPOOKY to get a 50% discount on Dark Horse Digital. It should be valid throughout October and stack with sale prices.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

The ComiXology app is officially dying. From now on comics will be accessed through the Kindle app . I'm sure the brand name itself isn't far behind.

I’m sure this will go as well as the last “Hey, comics are books! Let’s save resources and just shoehorn them into our existing book structure!” move did.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

So, I never buy any comics, but I do have the Comixology subscription for 6 bucks a month. Is that going to just merge into a Kindle subscription?

Is there a Kindle sub that is similar and what does it cost?

The email and info sheet they sent me does not discuss this at all.

And if that is the case, I hope the Kindle app's search function is better than the Comixology app. It fucking sucks.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

It's amazing how much they just destroyed Comixology. I used to look at the sales all the time, obsessing over them (heck I started this thread), and now it's like I can barely be motivated to go through the library of comics I already have.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

Yeah, I used to buy multiple sale titles every week. Now I buy once a quarter, which is fine because I have a huge backlog. Most of my comics dollars now go to kickstarter.

I agree that the current CMX app sucks at search. I can’t search for “Thor Epic Collection” to see which ones I’ve purchased. I can only search by series title, and Journey Into Mystery won’t come up in a search for “Thor” but Dejah Thoris and Lex Luthor series will.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

Yeah, spent thousands at Comixology before the Amazon takeover, and posted here near daily for years it seems. But the experience to shop/buy is just awful now. I feel like I have to do 30 minutes of careful searching to make sure I don’t already own something in some format/name before purchasing. I’ve basically not spent money there since the change.

I almost wish I never spent a dime on digital comics, and just waited for subscription services and Hoopla.

Still have an un-upgraded Comixology app on this iPad these past couple years, trying to finish offline reading the thousands of books I downloaded to it. If I even briefly comic to the internet with the app open it will brick and cause me to lose all the downloads. I’m jinxing myself now, but super surprised I haven’t accidentally opened it while online, or accidentally upgraded the app.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

Yesterday I was looking back at my Amazon orders to see if I had bought all the Hellboy library editions. The Hellboy omnibus's showed up in my order history and I was wondering when I ordered them (and where I put them). Turns out those were comixology orders I had completely forgotten about since I haven't used the service in so long. Just reminded me of how great a site it used to be and how much I spent there.

I might be late in posting but Dark Horse Digital had sent out a code (THANKYOU) for 50% off titles. I scored the Cyberpunk 2077 Library Edition Vol 1 for $15 and I even had a $2 store credit somehow, so $13 was my final total.

Marvel Unlimited you can use code CYBER23 to get 20 bucks off the regular annual membership (valid until 12/4):

https://www.marvel.com/mu-23holiday

DC Infinite has a code too but I don't think it's official yet.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

I opened the Kindle app, and it’s a giant mess. My collection is just hundreds of titles to scroll through, alphabetized for a while then the alphabet starts over again. Every few dozen lines or so it’ll group some volumes into a series, but with no rhyme or reason. A few years back, there was some kind of ridiculous deal on Scooby-Doo titles. I just scrolled through a hundred of them in this collection list. It’s like the grouping is done by some algorithm that has no idea what it’s doing. I guess Amazon just assumes we always know what we want to read and will just search for it.

On the good side, the reading experience on an iPad seems to be the same. And a book I recently read in the old CMX app is showing as read in the kindle app.

Dark Horse Digital is 50% off everything for Cyber Monday, but then add code THANKS for another 50% off, so 75% off total.

35 item Hellboy digital bundle up on humble bundle:
https://www.humblebundle.com/books/m...rk-horse-books

18 bucks for all of it is a steal, just be aware these seem to be pdfs.

edited to add: oh wait it says pdf and epub.

edited again; nope, just bought it, Most of the main series are pdf, some are in epub for some reason.

Epub books:
Hellboy: Oddest Jobs
Hellboy: Odd Jobs
Hellboy: Emerald Hell
Hellboy: All Seeing Eye
Hellboy: An Assortment of Horrors

and the Ghost/Hellboy special is in both formats

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

I picked up the Hellboy collection. I've got a couple of the books in physical but can't beat the price, and I have gotten used to reading digital versions. Add it to the backlog!
Wouldn't have minded cbz but I can deal with PDF. (Side note - is there an easy, free way to resize PDF files? For some reason my Complete Elfquest vols 3-7 are 2-5 GB,
My biggest complaints about the bundle deals are file naming conventions are sometimes wacky, and the inconsistency of PDF vs CBZ availability. But can't beat the price, and I'm assuming they're legit/publisher sanctioned deals.
I miss old, good Comixology. I had a bunch of books purchased through it as well.
Anyway -
Has anyone used Archive404.com? They have a small and very targeted collection of comics, look like mostly old 60s/70s horror and scifi, probably PDF, for like 5 bucks a complete run or 30 for a theme bundle. It's probably some guy who scanned his old collection. Was thinking about getting a few bundles/titles that are on sale now, but never heard of them before.

Dark Horse - How do you read their titles? Do you have to go through their dedicated app?

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

As far as I remember, Dark Horse has their own app and the purchases don't cross over into comixology and vice versa (even though their titles are on comixology now). I sometimes forget that I have a ton of stuff from various sales in the DH app.

As far as reducing size, obviously it'll affect resolution so I guess it depends on what it looks like after you reduce it. I think you can do it with Acrobat Pro or DC or whatever they call the non free one nowadays, but I'm sure there are other methods.

Here's one guy's journey to convert them to CBZ on his own:
https://lonm.vivaldi.net/2022/11/16/...to-cbz-format/

But I think Calibre can also convert to epub or mobi, not sure if it reduces the file size.

edited to add: I just used Calibre to convert the seeds of destruction to mobi and it cut the file size almost in half. Also I did it wrong because some of the pages are cut a little.
