Sadly, no, Tim will not have his own book for the first time in 20 years. (His ongoing started in 1993 with three miniseries throughout 1991-1992 before that.) Hopefully once the dust settles and the low-selling titles of the new 52 get canceled, DC will bring back Tim's book. |
Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
By my reckoning (based on perusing the TFAW.com sales page), 40 of the 52 titles have gone to a 2nd print, and three (Justice League, Action Comics and Batgirl) have gone to a 3rd. That's pretty impressive, given that one entire week's worth of #1s hasn't even been published yet!
This is actually the week I've been looking forward to the most: All-Star Western is one of the two books I was excited about (the other being Batgirl), and I think I'm going to try Superman and Voodoo. Also, it dawned on me yesterday during one of the four times I failed to fall and stay asleep that Captain Marvel is entirely absent from The New 52. I can't recall if that was previously noted in this discussion (my memory being worthless these days), but it took me by surprise when I thought about it. EDIT TO ADD I'm perusing the solicitations for the #4 issues right now and I see Batgirl will be guest-appearing in two issues: Nightwing and Birds of Prey. It seems DC really wants the buying public to get used to Babs back as Batgirl early on. Speaking of Barbara, earlier yesterday I tweeted Gail Simone that I thought Barbara's new roommate would be the kind of person to dig music on vinyl. Her response: Hmm. Unclear. But she does make the best laksa outside of Katong. Singapore women for the win. |
Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
So uh Catwoman. Yeah.
Between that and the depiction of Starfire in Red Hood there's a fair amount of vitriol. Deservedly so, I would think. Captain Marvel and the JSA are better off not being in this particular continuity, I think. Or maybe it's just their way of getting teenaged boys back in the fold. Edited to add a link, which contains spoilers for Catwoman: http://blog.newsarama.com/2011/09/21...dc-become-wtf/ |
Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
I really enjoyed Catwoman until those last few pages. Totally unnecessary. Ive yet to rmember the last time a comic jumped the rails like that...

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
That last page was very hentai-ish.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
Last page of Catwoman isnt much different than Batman Returns

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
My wife and I spent the day babysitting for a friend of ours, and on the way home we stopped at Barnes and Noble and I indulged in picking up Action Comics #1, Batwoman #1 and Detective Comics #1. Of the three, I was originally only interested in Batwoman, but I've heard enough good stuff about the other two that I decided I'd roll the dice. I'll read them and post thoughts about them later.
Also, earlier today I learned that the forthcoming Blu-ray of Green Lantern will include a Justice League #1 digital comic. It's unclear from the package back on Amazon whether this is something you can only view from the disc, or if it'll be a downloadable digital copy. This is the kind of cross-promoting they should have been doing all along, and I hope this becomes standard. |

Comics simply aren't for children anymore, and haven't been for at least a decade or more. That scene in Catwoman would not be out of place in an R-rated movie. DC is definitely going edgier in this reboot, trying to emulate Marvel to some extent. The Internet is awash in pornographic images of famous comic book characters, so there is definitely a market for it.

Did you read Flashpoint? That is exactly what Captain Marvel was like in the Flashpoint universe. |

When you look at a panel like this: http://www.4thletter.net/wp-content/...lanterns_1.jpg ...is your kneejerk reaction "wow! How mature and adult!", or do you picture some dumpy fifteen year old sulking off to his room, blasting Slipknot, and seething about how much his parents don't understand him? Just because it's not for eight-year-olds doesn't mean it's not juvenile. |

One of the things that's annoyed me so much about the relaunch is that too many of these books aren't as adult or edgy as they think they are...it's a high school sophomore's idea of what's adult and edgy, like the stupid chugging guitar riff from the TV spot they made to promote these comics. It's embarrassing.

Just because it's not for eight-year-olds doesn't mean it's not juvenile. More to the point, though, this characterization of some of what DC is peddling is just embarrassing. That Red Lanterns page looks like a tribute to 90s Jim Balent...by someone who didn't quite understand Balent's cheekiness. Seriously, how or why would anyone stand like that? Even Plastic-Man would be like, "Damn, that's awkward." It's contrived to showcase T&A, conflated with demons to evoke that, "I would totally get this as a big tattoo on my back if I was old enough" reaction. Mind you, I'm not against T&A; in addition to the all-ages titles I've cited, I also love me some Sin City; but even at his most exploitative, Frank Miller's art makes sense. This? This isn't even bad satire. It doesn't understand that it's a punch line in 2011 for this to be a mainstream book. If they took their cue from, say, John Byrne's run on She-Hulk it could work--he had a sense of humor about the whole thing that gave that book a light-hearted irreverence and charm. There's nothing charming about some of these New 52 series. |
Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
I mean, did anyone see that last Catwoman panel and NOT suddenly wonder if they were somehow transplanted into the body of some basement-dwelling mouthbreather searching Google Images for Batman/Catwoman erotic fanfic?
Adam is completely right. This isn't adult, this is junior fucking high. That said, I am enjoying much of the reboot thus far... but the signal-to-noise ratio is only a little higher than it was pre-reboot... |

More importantly, I'd like to think that while DC has everyone's attention, this is the perfect time for fans to make the industry address its somewhat dysfunctional relationship with women--creators, fans and characters. It has to be done anyway, and now is as good a time as any to make this happen. It's not about capitulation, it's about evolution. Not allowing artists to fill pages with unnatural stances like the one in that Red Lanterns page can only be a good thing. And again, no one is saying that comics shouldn't peddle sex; they're a form of entertainment the same as any other medium. But they should peddle sex that isn't embarrassing. |

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
I liked Catwoman. The sex scene was a little weird, but I enjoyed the rest. It had a lot of cheesecake in it, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. I think the problem with the depiction of heroines is there isn't any balance. Every heroine is drawn to be an uber-sexpot. I would be happy to see more depictions akin to Darwyn Cooke's Wonder Woman from New Frontier.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
Any thoughts on the other comics from this week? I won't be buying Catwoman because I agree that woman need to be better portrayed in comics. But how about Batman, Green Lantern Corps, etc? Or did I just miss the posts discussing those?

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
Batman was super solid. I know a lot of people like what Grant Morrison did with the character, but I just haven't felt Batman in years. The whole RIP stuff, and the lead up to it, just wasn't my cup of tea. But now I have two really cool Batman books in Batman and Detective, which makes this Bat-fan really happy.
The art for Batman is great. The faces are drawn a smidge off at times, but when Batman is in the cowl, it is BOSS! I'm surprised I liked it as much as I did. |
Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
I haven't done my write-ups yet, but I really dug Batman quite a bit. Nightwing was very good too. Wonder Woman was terrible IMO, and Legion was OK but totally baffling if you're a new reader. DCU Presents was OK as well; I've never been a big Deadman fan but I'm curious to see where it goes. Captain Atom was surprisingly GOOD, given that Krul is generally such a crappy writer. Supergirl was OK but needs to pick up quite a bit. Learned very little that drew me in. Catwoman was GOOD until the aforementioned ending, which turned the entire story into Barry Sue erotic fanshit. Birds of Prey was GOOD, with enough solid writing and interesting hints and backstory to ensure I'll be back for ish #2. And Red Hood was UTTERLY EMBARASSING SHIT.
Haven't read Blue Beetle or GLC yet. |
Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
I liked GLC more than the other GL books. I liked Wonder Woman more than Hokeyboy. I'll stick with it for now. Nightwing was my favorite of the week followed closely by Batman. I thought Red Hood started pretty good, then... well we know what happened. Legion was the only one that I definitely won't be back for.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
Yeah, I thought Wonder Woman was fantastic. Different strokes and all, but I couldn't disagree with Hokeyboy more. Great art, interesting story, and a fresh take on what has become a sort of stale character. I'm on board for this one.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
Blue Beetle - GOOD but with some sketchy dialog. I like the concept of the Scarabs as the weapons of an enemy corps for the Lantrns...
Green Lantern Corps - VERY GOOD indeed! Some fun DC space opera at its finest. I hated Wonder Woman wheni first read it. Not so much becauseit was a new take, but because it seemed like such a bad, lazy, poorly written one. I will give it another look-see though. |
Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
Anyone seen the Teen Titans preview?
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=preview&id=9901 I am not sure what to think of it. It seems like it is set in the early days of the Teen Titans when the newscaster says that metahuman teens are beginning to pop up everywhere. It is also said that Kid Flash has no connection to the Flash. WTF? Also Tim is looking at a picture of him in his Robin uniform with Batman, and the Robin uniform is his post-Infinite Crisis uniform that he wore to honor Conner when he was killed. So again WTF? That means Infinite Crisis is still canon and Conner was stilled killed by Superboy Prime, even though the new Teen Titans seems to be set in the early days when they first became the Teen Titans. Is there anything about this relaunch that isn't a complete mess? |
