Cyborg and Aquaman just don't get any love on JLA covers (besides the first one)

Not bad for a television commercial. Jim Lee's art is eye-catching, if anything.

wow that's pretty

Too bad I just threw out/sold all my comics and gave up on the hobby.

I may come back in if the Digital Thing pans out. Comic collecting takes up too much money and space.

I said the same thing three years ago. Now look at me... ordering massive quantities of books from DCSB. I'm telling you, being a comic book collector is like being a crack addict.

While digital comics will do in a pinch there's still nothing like holding a book in your hands. I don't care what anyone says, there's no way in hell I'm paying $2/issue for a digital download. I'll just wait for the TPB.

Yeah. I'm having withdrawals seeing all the new DC stuff. It's not fun. but for now, between $$$ and losing all my apartment space to my wife....I won't be returning anytime soon.

I hear you. I'm not a huge Digital Download fan anyway. So TPB's are a possibility.

I feel ya man. My money situation was pretty bad when I was basically forced to quit. Things have picked up to the point where I feel confident I can afford to spend a few bones on new comics.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

Ran into a guy at Half Price Books yesterday that reminded me what I hate about collecting comics. He was carrying on conversation with his wife, then me, about what things were "worth" as he pulled them out of the quarter boxes. He was particularly excited about finding a bagged Superman #75 with black armband for a buck the day before. I just indulged him while continuing to browse. Then he started bragging about buying $10 Green Lantern key chains at Toys "R" Us, taking the rings off the chains and flipping them on eBay for $50-75 because they were almost identical to die-cast ring replicas. I was just glad when he walked away. I wish there was something in this relaunch that would get rid of guys like that, though of course I know there's nothing anyone can do about them.

Out of curiosity, I'm thinking about ordering a few issues online since it's a bit of a hassle to get to my LCS during the week when the new issues hit the shelves. Years ago I ordered from TFAW.com and liked them. Are there any better sites I should consider?

What is this? 1991? People actually still believe they are going to make a fortune investing in modern era comics?

I hope he tries to sell it on ebay thinking he will get hundreds of dollars for it, but all he gets is one bidder for a quarter. It would be even better if he offers free shipping so that he would essentially be paying the bidder to take it off his hands.

"52 all-new #1 comics" doesn't really do much for the non comics reading audience than throw out an incredibly daunting number for them. "I'd have to read how many books each month?"

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

The New 52 Set To Rock Marketshare: Justice League #1 Over 200,000 Copies, Six Other Relaunch Books Over 100,000

A big piece of news just dropped in this Hero Complex piece about the DC relaunch. We knew the New 52 would have some big numbers, but the question was just how big, with so many titles launching at once — and of course, subsequently the question will become how much of it can be sustained. But for September, this little bit of info alone would appear to indicate that the relaunch is a big success. And now retailers, DC, and even other publishers have an opportunity to run with that as people come into stores to check out these titles.

Breaking the 100,000 mark is considered very noteworthy in the current market, and there have been months this year in which no titles have surpassed that level. It’ll be fascinating to see more complete numbers on the relaunch, and what effect it might have on other publishers’ numbers.

In the short run, it seems everyone in the comic-book industry will benefit. DC’s flagship title “Justice League No. 1” has pre-orders for more than 200,000 print copies, which would make it the bestselling title of 2011. Six other new DC No. 1’s already have more than 100,000 pre-orders.

“Fan interest is huge — much of it positive, some negative, and some very cautious,” Gladston said.

But much-hyped events and reboots have boosted comic-book sales before without much long-term effect. Wolfman wrote one of the earliest in 1985 with “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” which was originally intended to result in every comic book restarting at No. 1, before editors decided against it. Since then, events, crossovers and reboots have become a near annual occurrence for DC and Marvel.

I say to each their own. That dude's pursuits are just as valid as yours or mines. Who cares if what he's buying isn't worth a lick or if he's speculating? If I owned a shop, and this guy came in and bought some old worthless back-issue for whatever misguided reason, I'd surely be happy.

Generally speaking, I agree and if I ran the business, I'm sure I wouldn't begrudge the guy's purchases. But man, this specific individual just gave off that Comic Book Guy vibe that rubs me the wrong way. It was really the bit about the Green Lantern rings that irked me most, though. The guy is defrauding his buyers on eBay, passing off dissected key chains as ring replicas that command significantly higher prices. I might sell to the guy, but I damn sure wouldn't buy from him.

A few things...

As crazy as it sounds those bagged copies of Superman Vol. 2 #75 will still regularly sell for $20 to $25 bucks on the high end on eBay. While this isn't the norm, paying a buck for a comic you can turn around for about $12 average is pretty good.

Second, if this guy turned you off so much, why did you talk to him? I have never, ever understood people who will stand around and talk to someone they don't like or want to talk to. My ex-wife was always telling me how rude I was, but if I saw a joker like this and he started telling me his lame story, I'd say "Gotta go" and walk off. What do I care?

Third, there's nothing on earth that will get rid of people like that in relation to anything else. There will always be people looking to make a buck through legitimate or or not so legitimate methods. It's the law of supply and demand.

Last, you shouldn't let people like that get to you to the point where you don't enjoy your hobby. I love collecting comic books and no Comic Book Guy or speculator will ever take away from the joy I get from collecting.

In fairness, he engaged me in conversation. I was content to ignore him while he talked with his wife, but when she left he started chatting with me. I was just trying to check the list on my phone to make sure I didn't have a few Legends of the Dark Knight I'd found!

The comics selection at this Half Price Books--while frequently rewarding to explore--is not terribly large. I couldn't have avoided him without the self-defeating act of leaving what I was trying to do.

I accept this fact, but with the reservation I'm still allowed to dislike it. Much how I feel about the designated hitter.

I wouldn't let this one guy ruin anything for me, but I'd be lying if I said the speculators weren't part of the reason I lost my interest in comics in the first place about ten years ago. It got to the point that I couldn't discuss comics at a store or online without the subject almost always devolving into some variation of an eBay success story. I don't begrudge anyone making some money off this stuff, because it means the buyer got what he or she wanted at a price he or she was willing to pay. I'm cool with that. It's the sense that those sellers would just as readily ignore comic books altogether if they could make the same kind of profit off selling shower rings that bugs me.

I remember the 90s, and periodically hearing about some middle aged, balding fat guy hoarding all the copies of a particular new issue because it was "collectible," and seeing other kids my age or younger disappointed there were no copies for them to get. Sometimes I was the disappointed kid. It left a sour taste in my mouth.

Incidentally, Ron Marz has been tweeting about the relaunch lately. Earlier today he stated that he was really impressed by a lot of what he's read. In a subsequent tweet, he said he couldn't really go into particulars but he did go ahead and cite Voodoo as one that he thought was particularly well done. Voodoo, it should be noted, is written by Marz. According to the DC solicitation text, Kyle Rayner will appear in issue #3. So for those like myself who enjoyed Marz's run on Green Lantern, but are too intimidated to explore the Geoff Johns era, this might be a nice side title to explore.

re: the GL keychain thing
I'm a toy collector, but that sector has the scum of the earth as a part of it. Scalpers galore. Anything to make a buck. One of my worst comic store memories was after I just moved, and these guys came in with a haul from opening at TRU that they proceeded to brag about and mark up. That seems to be another industry where they start catering to a niche market (a whole wave of Super Friends cartoon-only characters? What kid is going to buy that?), except it'd be like you're trying to collect the Green Lantern comic book, never knew when the next issue was supposed to come out, and had to go the comic store every day hoping that there's an issue left for you.

At least that guy can buy his polybagged JLA with downloaadable code and alternate cover in a couple of weeks.

I'm curious to see what happens over the next few months. Will Diamond have to redo their numbers for the returns? By number 3 we'll have a pretty good idea of how the series are panning out (just in time for retailers to order #6), how the digital sales are going, and how late any of these creators are. Hopefully, like Lee, they at least have a few issues put away, but I think some of the art teams have already changed by #2...

Yeah... I too am not a fan of the Geoff Johns era of GL...

On your other post, there used to be a store in Houston where I bought all my comics. Friendly staff and for some reason the people who shopped there tended to be really chatty comic book fans who I enjoyed conversing with immensely. One day the store manager quits and is replaced by the epitome of Comic Book Guy. In less than six months the store had devolved into speculators' paradise - lots of copies of shiny covers and such. It got so bad I had to find another store... so in short, I feel ya.

Yeah, I started hating comic shops as a kid too. I remember when I was reading/collecting the Batman story Knightfall. Well, when the issue came out where Batman got his back broken, they didn't even put it on the shelf. They immediately put it behind the counter, on the wall, priced at $10.
