Mister Terrific -- Is it just me or is Power Girl a ZILLION times hotter when she's covered up but the puppies are DYING to burst out anyhow? Ahhh, boobies... anyway Mister Terrific is a favorite character of mine, and this was an OK comic, but I'm not chomping at the bit to get the next issue. I will, but it needs more oomph to keep me around.

Red Lanterns -- I remember reading this yesterday. Today, it's like trying to remember some pointless dream you had. It was sorta OK but forgettable. I'll pass.

Resurrection Man -- REALLY GOOD. I never read the 90s series so I'm coming into this one raw but I liked what I read. The "Quantum Leap/superpower" premise is pretty cool. I'll check out the next issue and see if it maintains quality.

Still have to pickup Suicide Squad and Superboy. Probably during a poop break.

Suicide Squad -- OK. A bit gruesome but I supposed it needed to be. Waller's dramatic weight loss is a slap in the face to all tubby black women in positions of power everywhere. I miss when Deadshot walked around with a toilet seat on his head. I'm not blown away by any stretch, but I'll give it another issue or two to really get going.

Superboy -- GOOD. Lobdell told a solid story that intrigued me enough to come back, and the art was pretty spiffy. The VR sequence alone was pretty goshdarn clever.

Sorry, Batman or Batgirl or whoever designed your wardrobe

The Morrison B&R run might have been my favorite in continuity/main stream series in years. I never would have thought Damian as Robin would have worked so well, but I absolutely loved the Chemistry he and Dick had...that said, I also love how now that he got used to Dick and they grew to trust each other, that all goes away and he has to work with Bruce, who is not what he expected...the line about him liking him better when he was gone was awesome.


I'm with you on this, it was good, and I want to see where it goes, but nothing groundbreaking.

So the red lanterns are going to be a bunch Ghost Riders now? I might pick up issue 2 just to see if it ends up being more intersting than that but it isn't looking promising...

I know very little about these 2 titles, but everything i have read has been positive. I may have to go pick them up

(The way I see it, anything and up is worth buying straight out. s are very good but missing something, which makes them recommendations with reservations. The s are average/meh/OK -- pick up ONLY if you're fans of the characters, s are deeply flawed and not worth purchasing, but perhaps maybe salvageable, and and below can just go pound sand.)

I read a few comics for a couple of years back in the 80s when I was a kid. I haven't read one since, and basically everything I know about characters has come from movies and tv shows. I've really enjoyed most of the 2000s superhero movies, and the restart of the DC universe got me interested in reading some titles. So I started lurking in this thread, and I've now read 15 books (mostly choosing based on the reviews here). So, here's my quick take on the ones I've read, and keep in mind I've never even heard of half of these guys.

Loved: Animal Man, Deathstroke, Detective, Frankenstein - Agent of SHADE, Resurrection Man

Liked: Action, Batman and Robin, Demon Knights, Men Of War, Static Shock

Undecided: Stormwatch, Green Lantern, Justice League, Swamp Thing

Didn't Like: Batwoman

My "Loved" and "Liked" list is, with the exception of the two Batman and one Superman titles, comprised of books I had never heard of before reading them. Anyway, just in case anybody was wondering if these new runs could grab a new reader, I can say those listed definitely got this noob. I look forward to reading the reviews here for the rest of the #1s!

I liked Green Lantern. They were some good lines and can't wait to see what they do with Sinestro and Hal. Good read!

On the other hand, I wasn't impressed with the first issue of Red Lanterns. I have a feeling that they are going to the anti-hero route with Atrocitus which doesn't excite me too much.

I picked up three of the new titles this week:

Suicide Squad - Nice set-up, they seem to be taking some of the characters and the whole concept itself in a darker direction than in the past. Still enjoy Deadshot, even minus the 'stache, King Shark is just fun ("Meat! Meat! Meat!), but I'm not quite sure what to make of this reinterpretation of Harley Quinn. I'd prefer to see the old Waller, but DC is clearly trying to make the comics reflect their theatrical counterparts rather than the other way around, so I can see why they made the change. I'll give it several more issues and see how things play out.

Demon Knights - Lots of medieval fun. I've always been a fan of the mystical characters with their origins in the Arthurian era and they've managed to throw most of them and some other ancient characters around at the time, resulting in a very interesting mix of lead characters (assuming they all stick around). This issue is mostly set-up, but it's already been established that the origins of Stormwatch are here, plus the characters are interesting with fun interactions, so there are plenty of reasons to keep following this book.

Legion Lost - It's okay, but again just set-up of a longer story. I'm already familiar with the characters as a longtime Legion reader and they've thrown many of my favorites in here. That, unfortunately, is balanced by the writing of Fabian Nicieza, a solid but unspectacular writer. I'll give it a few issues, but I really hope there is more in the way of characterization, because this really seems to be a heavily plot-driven book.

I wasn't inspired to purchase any of the others, though I may check out Superboy and Frankenstein eventually as I'm hearing good things about them.

Because we had to go out and pick up my prescription refills, I toughed it out and we ran some errands. We popped in on Barnes & Noble, and I discovered they had Action Comics, Batgirl, Detective Comics and Swamp Thing, and maybe one other #1. I picked up Batgirl, and almost snagged Action and Detective before deciding against them. I'm more interested to read Superman than Action and while I love Batman, I find myself more drawn to the supporting character spin-off books like Batgirl, Batwoman and Catwoman.

I'll read Batgirl later, probably tonight, and post my thoughts then. I know I was thrilled to find it somewhere at cover price!

I really dig all the excitement around these DC books, but man, some of the art on the titles I'm interested in feels really shoddy. Not horrible, mind you, but Suicide Squad, Mr Terrific, and Deathstroke all have ho-hum art IMHO.

I don't disagree with you (I'm looking at you Frankenstien!), but I thought the art in Deathstroke was pretty good.

Ok, I thought the inflated cover price thing was only at conventions or really bad shops. Or did you just want a 1st printing?


This is great news! Always good to see a new reader, and good to hear that this line could actually work for attracting real, brand new readers. So the price didn't put you off?

Yes, but I won't be continuing with many beyond the first issue. I will just wait for TPBs. I will probably buy #2 of the ones I listed as "Loved" though.

I read a couple more, and I would put them both on my "Didn't Like" list: Justice League International and Legion Lost. JLI, was just lame. My problem with LL was that it introduced like 20 people in the first 3 pages. I didn't know who was who or good or bad or anything. My eyes glazed over, and I just went through the motions of reading it. Definitely the least new-reader-friendly book I have read so far.

FWIW, I've been reading Legion books for ages and am very familiar with all of those characters (except the badnik, I guess), and I still didn't think much of Legion Lost. It's a pretty sloppy book without anything at all to compel me to stay onboard for issue two.

Yup, another Longtime Legionnaire (eesh) who did not care for Legion Lost one whit. I like Fabian Nicieza as a writer, but as a first issue, what a failure!

^^ HOT DAMN! I just came here post this very news. There's hope for Green Arrow yet, which BY FAR has been the worst New 52 title to date.

Then again, it's being co-written by Dan Jurgens, whose JLI #1 was pretty abysmal.

Hey, that's still more than you were doing before (and heck, more than I'm doing with DC right now). Like I said elsewhere, the trade route is a much better way for new comic readers to get into the hobby anyway.

I think that is basically true for almost any run of the Legion in its history. Legion titles are basically set in a self-contained universe, and has been rebooted and retconned so many times that even veteran readers have a tough time of picking it up quickly.

Not sure I understand this. $2.99 is the cover price DC put on the issue; it's the same $2.99 no matter where you buy it. I agree $2.99 is steep for a monthly comic, but them's the breaks. Nowhere to buy that you'll find a lower cover price. (Even if you order online and get a discount, you'll find $2.99 printed on the cover.)

My point about not paying over cover was that we've seen reports of shops jacking up the prices already and I wasn't willing to buy this or any other issue over cover. I was content to pass on it entirely until I stumbled across it at B&N. Also, I was entirely indifferent to which printing it was. I'm a reader, not a collector, at this point in my life.

I spent most of yesterday in bed with a fever and nausea, but I finally read and reviewed Batgirl #1. I was quite pleased by it, actually, though there are some clumsy bits of dialog. I was afraid they were frequent, but I found instead there were few of them and I could overlook them fairly easily. The pace of the story was just about perfect. It took me a little more than 20 minutes to read this issue, which is about how I like my single issues. It's fine with me that issue #1 only alludes to The Killing Joke and Barbara's "miraculous" recovery having taken place without exploring them in depth. I think new readers will glean from the flashback page enough to understand her trauma without feeling this is already inaccessible to them. Just acknowledging there's a continuity elephant in the room is sufficient for this first issue, I think.

The art was gorgeous, from edge to edge, from front to back. The layouts did a great job structuring the pace of the story, and it was nice to see action sequences that weren't told across several successive splash pages. The page with Jim Gordon was particularly well done; the second panel, where Jim just smiles at his daughter walking again was maybe the best piece of art in the entire issue.

I'd give it a solid 4-stars, really. I feel like it's the beginning of a book I want to keep reading, and after being discouraged that I wouldn't even get hold of a copy, I didn't expect to be this satisfied.

So, yeah, there are some clunky bits of dialog and thought boxes ("Gotham, bless my aim" is an absolute groaner); enough to cost this issue a fifth star. But it was above average, I thought. It made me laugh, and the exchange between Barbara and her new roommate rang particularly true to me as someone with chronic health issues who has had to bite his tongue when healthy people say thoughtless things. I'm definitely looking forward to issue #2.

You were happy to find it at the normal cover price, so I thought you had been to comic shops around your area and they had all been marking it up or something. I see reports here, but I hope those are only isolated shops or conventions, and not the norm.
