Hmmm...the sub $50 copy being offered up at the link right now is from a newbie, and it says there may be dings/dents. Already damaged, and the risk of amazon shipping making it worse...will have to hold out for a sale at IST or Amazon proper that brings it down to 50% off or better (I have a slight regret not picking this one up the first time it went on sale).
The newbie thing now has me a little concerned, but I'll keep my order and report back here when/if I get my shipment. I suppose I could write an Amazon seller review as well, but meh. |
Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals
Hey, it's the comics that count, right? So what if the omnibus doesn't come with the cover... ;)

*SPOILER WARNING FOR PEOPLE READING E-MAIL NOTIFICATIONS OR WHO DON'T WANT TO BE TEMPTED INTO BUYING MORE OMNIBOO*
I know I've gone overboard because I rarely read Omniboo. :( Most of my reading happens on vacation, which is why I really like the Epic Collection format. But these things are so damn sexy. :( I notice that Amazon is selling the recent SHIELD omnibus directly for $55. So as far as Brubaker goes, is this the order? Captain America Omnibus Death of Captain America Omnibus Captain America Lives Omnibus Trial of Captain America Omnibus Return of the Winter Soldier Omnibus Also, I wouldn't necessarily expect Amazon or IST to have these deep discount Omnis directly. IST sometimes has them on discount, but I don't think they had them the last time Marvel did a big clear out. On occasion IST will just do a temporary sale with their own overstock inventory that matches the clearance prices for crap like Marvel Now Omnibus. Marvel often remainder marks their excess inventory and IST won't sell that stuff. I've seen both marked and unmarked clearance Omnibuses in the past so I don't know who decides what gets black sharpie all over it. If Amazon gets discounted Omnibuses directly, usually they are remainder marked and sold on a separate product listing page as Bargain Priced apart from the standard listing. Sometimes Amazon does lower the price on their own stock drastically. Like I believe they had the second Marvel Star Wars Omnibus for like 70% off or something ridiculous without any specific clearance sale to push the price that way. But there should be several re-sellers and comic shops that do business on both eBay and Amazon Marketplace that will have discounted Omnibuses if their past sales and inventory have been any indication. Last time Marvel cleaned out the warehouse there was a big wave of the discounted books but so far I haven't spotted anything other than the CGN sale. |
Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals
Thanks for the info. I didn't really have much hope for Amazon directly selling these but I did for IST. :( I haven't been shopping there for that long so I'm not that familiar with their patterns.
As much as I like IST for their prices, their packaging, and their not being Amazon, their site is just pain to use. Buying the omnis from Amazon marketplace was so much easier. I'm probably mostly done for now anyway, but I'll see if I get sucked into a couple others. |
Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals
eBay seller dheader has the clearance Omnis up. All are reasonable prices, some are cheaper than others though.

I'm pretty sure that's the same seller in question from the Amazon Marketplace.
Also, someone on the masterworks forum said IST said they will not be running this sale. Take that FWIW. |
Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals
I have ordered probably 10-15 omnibus from dheader in the past on ebay when they had deep discounted ones before. They are very reliable for these kind of deals.

None of the ones I have received from them have ever been remainder marked. They were all in their original shrinkwrap without any dings or anything.

Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals
I wouldn't expect dheader to lower prices back. I've tracked certain books they sell for years (!) that have remained the same price. They raise prices as their stock dwindles of a specific book. They are a reputable seller and their stuff comes in excellent condition.

Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals
Got my Hamilton Books order today. All were shrinkwrapped other than the Showcase that would never be, and the Absolute came in the white box. Well packaged with no Styrofoam peanuts.
I'm still tempted to get the Green Lantern Omniboo from them. |

I'm still tempted to get the Green Lantern Omniboo from them. All of the Marvel books were remainder marked which is rather annoying since they didn't bother to disclose what books were remainder marked on the website. Now that's a waste of money since I could have got these books much cheaper elsewhere if I wanted copies with black sharpie bleeding onto the pages. The DC HCs were brand new and sealed. The Fantagraphics Tardi box set was new and sealed as far as I can tell. |
Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals
Yeah, I only bought DC from Hamilton this round.

You can always pinch the book tightly closed with one hand, and with the other rub a postage-sized square of very fine sandpaper over it until it vanished. It works better on stamps, but it might work okay on a marker
It's much easier to use the light sandpaper on prose books where generally the mark is lighter and the paper quality is uniform and less sensitive to filing. On a second look, I noticed my TPB of Aliens from Titan actually had a remainder mark on it - very light red marker that I completely missed the first time around. No bleed through. If I wanted to remove it, that would be an easy one with fine sandpaper. |
Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals
I really appreciate hearing about the shrinkwrap/remainder condition of the Hamilton orders from davidh777 and kodave. Thank you gentlemen! And my condolences to kodave. The last time I ordered from them I had the same with 3/4 of the Marvel HC's I ordered, it definitely is disappointing.
I had decided to put off my order with HB until my new cc statement generates, which will be at the end of the week, so it seems I'll order the DC titles I had my eye on, and skip the Marvel. I was also thinking about the Marada The She-Wolf HC by Titan, but based on what kodave said then I guess I'll skip that too, although it's possible that since it's a HC then it might be wrapped and unremaindered where the Aliens TPB wasn't. The only other title I've been looking at is DC COMICS YEAR BY YEAR: A Visual Chronicle HC by Dorling Kindersley. I've no idea if those are supposed to be shrunk or not, but might take a chance, unless anyone who owns it and/or bought it from Hamilton, might be able to say for certain? |

As for the DC Year by Year - I own it but I didn't purchase it new so I don't know if it came shrink wrapped. But it is a slipcase edition so if they were going to mark it, they'd have to go through the trouble to slide the book out and mark it, or mark both the book and the slipcase. If they marked the slipcase alone (over the UPC would be my guess), I imagine you could probably take that off with some rubbing alcohol. If you care about having the most up to date edition possible, they put out a revised edition with 16 additional pages covering 2010-2014 back in the fall of 2014. It goes by the revised title of DC Comics: A Visual History. It's also slipcased with supposedly new limited prints inside the slipcase. Hamilton Book has that edition but it's not sale priced - you can get on Amazon cheaper. (And for anyone collecting these types of books, the Marvel edition got a revision in 2013 with 32 new pages, and Star Wars is getting a new edition in the fall of 2016 which will surely have all of TFA stuff in it but will be instantly out of date as soon as it's out thanks to the other movies and properties.) |
Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals
Got my order from Double Header today, so it took about a week and a half (their original promised date was three weeks, and I was watching the packages make a U.S. tour). Four Marvel omniboo (FF 1 and 2, Byrne FF 2, Trial of Captain America), all shrinkwrapped, none remainder-marked. The three came in a cardboard box, while the one I ordered singly came wrapped in cardboard sort of like an Amazon package but looked fine. Maybe a little jacket wear on the corners, but nothing noticeable.
I'm pretty pleased with the readability of the volumes--I thought they might be more Absolute sized. The Byrne is super-thick, though. |
Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals
The DC Comics: A Visual History is slipcased and shrinkwrapped, though I haven't opened mine yet.
I don't see how people can really collect those books, though, don't they update it pretty much every year? That's a lot of coffee table books to have. |

And the same for the DC Year by Year, especially mentioning the newer version with the bonus material. I'll look into that one, but would probably be fine with this older version. In any event, I've got a much better handle on everything for my order, and you guys have definitely helped me out, I appreciate it.

Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals
FWIW, when I bought Marada at my LCS, it wasn't shrinkwrapped.
