Going to be a brutal June for my comic shop, I am dumping alot of crap I have had subs for, some of them are: Marvel Team Up, Cable & Deadpool, Black Panther, Runaways, Punisher, New Excaliber, Superman, Batman. Alot of true garbage coming out from Marvel these days, at $3 a pop they are not worth it....

Does anyone else's shops put comics out on Thursday instead of Wed this week due to the holiday? I seriously went there to buy a few new issues and was sorely disappointed yesterday.

Seems like anytime there is a Monday holiday that happens. I went and picked up a few things from last week I hadnt ordered. Mainly because I have screwed up my knee at the gym and I wanted something to read while in bed.

Yes the new books are out today because of the holiday. The way I was told by a local comic store, if there is a major holiday on a Monday the books are delayed one day. If there is a holiday that is not a major one then UPS will be open and they will delivery on that day (Presidents Day, MLK day are two that are not considered major for UPS)....

This just in...
Holy Sappho, Batman! Batwoman is a dyke!
Batwoman returns to the pages of DC Comics as a lipstick lesbian and I’m just licking my lips thinking of the artwork to accompany the voluptuous woman’s kicking and punching and fighting evildoers and all that crime fighter stuff.
It is interesting that DC Comics, the same company that ordered a New York gallery to halt an exhibition featuring Batman and Robin in homoerotic poses, is now making news as portraying Kathy Kane, aka Batwoman, as a lesbian super hero.
According to reports, she’s set to make her first appearance in the July issue of “52,” a weekly year-long project that debuted on May 10. In addition to the gay character, the new DC Comics series focuses on an ethnically diverse set of characters, including a Mexican teen as the Blue Beetle and the Great Ten, a government-sponsored team of Chinese crime fighters.
While gay men may have always had an affinity for super hero comics and their muscular bodies wrapped in spandex suits, as noted by Brian Moylan in his narrative to the X-Men and Marvel comics, it often goes unnoticed that some lesbians also hold comic super heroes close to their hearts.
I can remember as a young girl flipping through the pages of DC Comics’ Superman stories and wishing to be the man in red and blue, whisking down from the skies to rescue Lois Lane from some unsavory villain. I probably also wished to have his great hair and sideburns, with that little bit of curl at his forehead.
And what respectable lesbian now in her mid-30s didn’t imagine being the Bionic Woman or Wonder Woman — or possibly being rescued by these gorgeous women — while growing up as an angst-ridden girl despising having to wear skirts on picture day?
Comic books played an incredible role for me growing up in shaping my ideas of right and wrong. And while most were about men and starred male super heroes with the women oftentimes portrayed as damsels in distress, I often identified with the sullen super hero men who had this secret they could not share.
It will be interesting to see how Kathy Kane, the lesbian Batwoman, and her relationship with Gotham City ex-cop Renee Montoya will play out in the pages of “52.”
Will their story line be smart and progressive and one that will inspire other young lesbians out there looking for role models?
I hope so. And I don’t mind admiring her tight suit, either.

The Batwoman costume looks quite a bit like the Batman Beyond suit, so it gets a thumbs-up from me.
It's sad that when I see an e-mail in my inbox that says "Your DCBS order has shipped", the very first thing I do is go back to DCBS and place another one. I can't not have an order outstanding.

Arad Becomes Ex-Man at Marvel
In a move that reportedly caught Wall Street off guard, Avi Arad, whom many analysts have called the real superhero of Marvel Entertainment, resigned Wednesday as chairman and CEO of the company's film studio and chief creative officer of the parent company. He will now head his own company, Avi Arad Productions, which will continue to produce films featuring Marvel's superhero characters, including next year's Spider-Man 3. The move comes just days after X-Men: The Last Stand set a Memorial Day record at the box office and on the same day that Arad sold 3.15 million shares in Marvel Entertainment, worth $60 million, that vested last Friday. According to trade reports, some analysts speculated that Arad was leaving the company because he disagreed with its decision to fund several upcoming films on its own through a $525-million debt facility set up by Merrill Lynch. "This is not a ringing endorsement of company strategy," Banc of America analyst Michael Savner told Daily Variety. "He may understand something about the company the street doesn't," said Evan S. Wilson of Pacific Crest Securities in an interview with the New York Post. Marvel's shares tumbled by more than 5 percent on the news Wednesday.

Now DC creates a gay superhero and it's suddenly big deal, and this is DC were talking about. I'm sure were going to be seeing Jim Lee, Michael Turner and Adam Hughes pin ups. And I think what concerns the fans is that were going back to the 90's. Variant covers, swimsuit specials, etc.
The thing that concerns me however is that were either going to be getting
A) The lesbian sex sales batwoman, with the pinups and it basicly being soft core porn.
B)The cliche and corny "girl power!" story. Like were going to get a scene in the book where a white irish character has a problem with her being a lesbian and she proves them wrong and is twice the as any man. Or something stupid like that.
A:
B:
Also isn't batman a loner? He's got what oracle, robin, nightwing, batgirl, catwoman, huntress, and now batwoman?

Yeah, but Wolverine's supposed to be a loner, too.

In regards to Batwoman's "lipstick lesbian" status. I applaud characters that are characters, that just happen to be gay, but get a little worried when it's the main selling point of a new character. This might just be DC PR trying to get some attention, so I'll just have to wait and see how the character actually is in the books before I can decide if it's just a stunt.
I have to give credit to 52. This story isn't dragging at all. I was all set for this book to move along at a snails pace, but so far I've left each issue satisfied with how much story it contained. Actually the 52 title packs more story than most regular comics with the added bonus of the History of the DCU back story. This title is also showing how a company can refocus the spotlight on some already existing characters instead of making some new flavor of the month character. Montoya, Question, Steel, and Black Adam are all going to come away from these issues with a boatload of new fans...at least I think they will.

Is that Ted McKeever art on "Princess of Mars?" The cover/art sample sure looks like his style.

Slow week for me:
52 Week 4: Another good issue, but not as good as the first 3. I'm intrigued with the Kryptonian cult storyline, but I wasn't too sure just what the hell was going on with Steel. Also, not enough Booster Gold! Hopefully there will be more of him in the coming weeks.
Ultimate Fantastic Four: I enjoyed reading this and I'm sure it's because Mark Millar is writing it. Sadly, he's leaving the title when this current story arc is over and when he leaves I'm done with the title. Anyway, it was a pretty solid issue - Doctor Doom returns! And Johnny has a baby alien growing inside of him! Not only that, but the Zombie Fantastic Four are about to escape, and I'm really curious to see just how they do. Mark Millar has a lot to cover with this storyarc, seeing as it's only 3 issues long - I hope he can pull it off.
Next weeks (tentative) list looks pretty good:
BPRD: The Universal Machine #3
52 #5
Wonder Woman #1
Civil War Front Line #1

On the OYL side, Superman this week was another excellent chapter, although it might signal the return to pre-crisis Superman levels. I can't help but notice the S shield is a little different now...but ah, who really cares, it was a great issue and the story so far is excellent.
The story running through Batman really impressed me wtih the last issue, and I was gearing up for the next run of writers. The first two issues made it seem like a by-the-numbers Batman story but the latest issue was great - even if it had only one character, it was perfectly done. The only thing I didn't like was the ending - I would have preferred
[spoilers]If they changed it so that he didn't burn his face with acid again - I mean really, if he's so damn healthy then why keep the stuff around. I know I know, he was probably saving it for a rainy day, but it would have been interesting if he did it some other way, like with a hot stove or something gruesome like that. Either way, it was a great moment and I hope they take Two-Face in a different direction. The Batman villains are starting to feel really really tired.[/spoilers]
Ultimate X-men so far has been really disappointing and i'll probably be dropping the book soon. I've collected it since the beginning and it's always been a favorite of mine, but something about Kirkman writing mainstream books just doesn't work - I honestly don't know what it is. The "date night" storyline seemed really contrived and lacked any coherence - it could have been fit into one issue, and the current storyline is feeling weak and predictable. I liked Vaughan's run despite it's predictability but it had some really good character moments and the art was spectacular - Stuart Immomen's flexibility never ceases to amaze me.
I do like DC now - mainly because every week there's a book I want to read, and I know it's going to be good. Having bi-weekly storylines through Batman and Superman and 52 give me something good to pick up every wednesday.

Crap . . . no ship notice from DCBS this week. I'm pretty much laid up here at home. Just had an MRI on my knee, and I need COMICS!
While waiting on my MRI, the lobby TV had CNN on and a story on Batwoman. Drudge has an article linked to how gays love the new Superman actor, Brandon Routh. Now we have Alan Moores Lost Girls on the horizon and ripe for being picked up on mainstream news I hear.
God, I hope comics don't start getting a bunch of shit from the talking heads on CNN and FOX. Or damn even dare I say even Congress? Look at how the video game industry gets crapped on. Just when comic sales are up too . . .

They really need to drop the "Real-time" angle in 52. I love the story but am I suppose to believe that it took two weeks for Ralph to get some answers from Wonder Girl?
