April comic book thread
I am not sure about anyone else, but IMO 2.99 is the ceiling for me. I have put up with comic price increases for over 30 years now and I have reached the end. I am paying 2.99 for most of my monthly books and 3.99 for some specials and for what I get it ain't worth it! It seems all the comic companies are now at this 3.00 mark and they better think real hard if they break the 3.00 mark. I will cancel over 3/4 of my reserves if this happens. Be warned DC & Marvel you are playing with fire!

I'm this close to buying nothing but omnibuses. Think about it. There's monthlies, then trades, then hardcovers of the trades, then omnibuses of the multiple hardcovers. With each edition, you get more freebies. I'm to the point (as with DVDs) that I'm like, to hell with it. I'll just wait a few years and see if they have a super duper special edition available. If not, I'll go get the best edition so far. But there's no reason to buy anything new anymore (well, unless you wanna be a part of the discussions).

I had my heart set on picking up nothing but Trades at the beginning of last year (with the exception of JSA which I adore) but the whole Infinite Crisis storyline sucked me back into monthlies. Now that I've paid for pretty much everything DC had to throw at me, I find myself eyeing Marvel's Civil War series. I told myself that after IC, I was gonna say bye to monthlies....looks like that's not gonna happen anytime soon.
Tho I do agree that $2.99 is a bit much, DC hasn't let me down this past year. And from what I've read of Civil War...Marvel's finally taking a great swing at bat.

While I'm in the same boat as all of you about being unhappy about the price increase to $2.99, I look at it with this perspective....
I know James (er, sorry, Bishop2knight) and a few others (myself included) are recent converts to online comic services, and you all were buying the comics at your LCS for $2.50 or whatever prior to switching to online.
Now that you're using DCBS or Mailordercomics, or what have you, even at $2.99 the discount you get still prices the book below what you were paying up until recently before at your LCS.
Maybe thinking of it like that will help to lessen the pain? Works for me.

I remember when prices went up to $1.25. I was like, "nooo! I'm only 12 years old, I can't afford this!"
Anyway, I just finished reading X-Statix Presents: Dead Girl #s 1-3. It's such an entertaining book. While I liked the X-Statix series, the characters were generally so unlikable that it was hard to fully enjoy it, but putting the focus on Doctor Strange and Dead Girl in this title was a great idea. I'd love to see Milligan & Allred work on these characters again when this is done. Loved the Dead Sisters Book Club, too.

I remember when comics went from 60 cents to 75 cents. Most of the places I hang out online, that makes me a whippersnapper (I have friends who remember being sad because the dollar their folks gave them could only buy 8 of the new 12 cent comics instead of 10 of the old 10 cent comics). Around here, it makes me feel like I'm ready for the retirement home.

I only started collecting in '94. Stuck with it until late '95 or so, and then quit cold turkey because I couldn't afford every other week a $5.00 foil cover which was the rage then.
Kept up with the industry and titles I was interested here and there, mostly from the internet. Got back into collecting full time last summer. Mostly a DC fanboy these days, which is odd since when I was a kid I was almost exclusively Marvel.
My monthly average for the past 6 months with DCBS has been $70.00, but sometimes that gets bumped up if I get into a trade frenzy. I would definitely not be able to afford all of my comics if I bought them from my LCS. It helps I guess that I also sell a lot of my trades on ebay after I'm done with them, so they normally pay for themselves.

I remember the .35 to .40 hike. Before that I recall reading some comics once in awhile, but not the price. When they were .35 was when I really started getting interested in them. In 1985 a comic store opened near by and I think comics were .60 then. I could still get everything I wanted with my 5.00 weekly allowance.
I totally agree about DCBS making it it much easier . . . but since we seem to have such unbridled enthusiasm for them every month, I didn't want to be the first to bring it up!

My comic guy I go to gives me like 10% off on new stuff (and 20% on back issues), but I still think I would drop any title that went to over 2.99 for regular issues. I'm not even buying that much anymore, but $3+ for a 5 minute read is INSANE. I might still pick up a TPB, but no way would I keep buying monthly issues.
I would go the online subscription route, but I like supporting my local guy I've shopped with for years, even if its just a few back issues and new comics a month.

I just realized that Legion of Super-Heroes has 30 pages of story/art for $2.99. Is this normal nowadays? I thought most comics nowadays come with 22 pages of story/art.

Yes, Legion of Super Heroes is 30 pages. That's why it's such a treat for me every month.
Most monthlies are 22 pages. Some creator owned works run from 26-30 pages, usually because they want to cram as much as they can in each issue.

I haven't read the latest issue of Legion... the last one I got was the one with Tyroc and Dawnstar on the cover. But they sure seem to cram that book with extras, from the illustrated mailbag to extra side stories every once in a while. As a longtime Legion fan, I was very skeptical about yet another revamp, especially with Waid divorcing them from pretty much every other iteration of the team, but that last issue reminded me that Waid has long been a Legion fanboy himself.

I'm another long-time Legion fanboy. The book is pretty good, but it just doesn't feel like the Legion to me. I also think the whole "generation gap" motif is pretty stupid. Other than that, Waid and Kitson are turning out a good comic, so I'll keep reading (and secretly hoping that they bring back the real Legion
).

I'm secretly hoping for the real Legion too... especially with that cover! I agree that the whole generation vs. generation thing didn't sit well with me at first, and seems kinda forced... but if it turns new kids onto Legion, I'm all for it. It is well crafted, and there are little bits of nostalgia worked in there, so I'm here for the ride. Hey, I hated the whole Matrix/Supergirl thing at first too, but grew to love Peter David's version of her, before she was unceremoniously dumped for this farce of a Kara. We'll see how she fits in with the Legion. And is that cartoon still on track?
I'm actually very, very happy that three of my favorite DC properties seem to be doing well and are a blast to read: JSA, Teen Titans, and the Legion. Though Titans has been slipping lately...

I just got my DCBS shipment and I'm about to wet myself. It included the Essential Godzilla. I have been waiting almost 30 years to read all those issues. I had about 3-4 as a kid and always wondered what happened. As soon as I catch up on all the 1 yr later happenings that puppy is getting read!
(yes I know, it probably is a real cheese fest and I will be let down)

Is anyone else getting annoyed about the piss-poor organization of Infinite Crisis / One Year Later? It's either nonsense stories like the Batman books, or garbage in Superman that leaves you going "What the fook???" Would it have been THAT hard to start the OYL books AFTER the Infinite Crisis series was over?

To me, that Essential Godzilla is the new Bible. A great time capsule to the Marvel of that time. I use to collect Godzilla, The Micronauts & Shogun Warriors. Anything that had a toy connected to it (sue me, I was like 8 years old at the time). It's a fun read.

Why would they? I think that's the best thing in telling this story all over the place and not in a linear story.
You're left wondering what happened in that year that past. Especially with all the clues being laid out through the books. You see a superboy statue next to the superman one wondering what exactly happened. Not knowing how superman lost his powers or why Batman took the year off.
It's suppose to leave you asking "what the fuck?" because not all the pieces to the puzzle are revealed yet. Starting it up as crisis continues will be just as good. Because tomorrow when you pick up Crisis and then Teen titans and Batman you will have the full effect of the spoiler all in one day.
Not just some book down the months going "Yeah, that character died" or whatever four months ago. It's all being revealed at once and that is amazingly well planned out.
You also would have to wait for 52 to be over for more questions to be answered. It was done very well if you ask me.
