The Official new Comic Book Discussion thread for June 2004
Figured I'd start a new comic book thread for June for all the comic fans here to talk about what new books your buying & checking out. Also, in case anyone doesn't know. New comics are shipping Thursday instead of Wed. this week.
Here is what I'll be picking up this Thursday. A very light week, the first of teh month is always the slowest .
BPRD A Plague Of Frogs #4 - Really been diggin' this series. If anyone has to draw these character beside Mignola, I'm glad it's Guy Davis. This book has filling in the Hellboy void nicely.
Firestorm #2 - A decent first issue. Don't know how I feel about this series yet.
Hellblazer Highwater TP - Love this book. Only buy it in trade form though.
Superman Birthright #11 - Probably the only comic book fan in the world tha likes Leinil Yu's art on Superman more than Jim Lee.
Swamp Thing #4 - Been enjoying this new incarnation.
Thanos #11 - This book reminds me of the stuff I read as a I kid. Diggin' it but I think it's cancelled which is typical of all Marvel series I like.
Thor #80 - It's going to be weird reading Thor withou Jurgens writings, I think he's done something like 70 issues on this book.
Ultimate Fantastic Four #6 - The only Ultimate book I read & only b.c Ellis is taking over.
Uncanny X-Men #445 - Davis rules.
Rob Zombie Spook Show International #8 - I consider this one of my guilty pleasure comics.
JP - If you reading this log into the Broken Frontier message boards, I sent you a PM you'll want to read.

This week's comics are pretty slim...
For me:
DETECTIVE COMICS #795 (I love me some batman)
Y THE LAST MAN #23 (this book is so damn good)
ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #6 (like Glen/Sessa, I'm onboard just for Ellis...and I can't handle having gaps in my collection)
ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #60 (carnage smarnage.)
UNCANNY X-MEN #445 (I wasn't too impressed with the last issue, but I'm a sucker, and suckers keep buying books in the hope they get better)
And I'll be getting this just because of the cover....isn't it beautiful?

The shipping is weird, but basically they will email you on thursday, with the shipping charges and you have until friday to paypal them. If you fail to pay they will hold your order over for the next thursday and then email you again with the same shipping charges. Though the shipping is weird once they do ship it arrives pretty fast and they pack and protect the books pretty good. If you want a more detailed explanation go to adventuresrealm.com and they explain their shipping policy there.
I've ordered from them before and had no problems.

I'm set-up with biweekly shipments from Midtown Comics and it takes a week to get to me, so I'm 2-3 weeks behind everybody else.
Started with the first issue in the Invincibles trade last night.
I liked the art, even though it took a little to get used to. Seems like it'll be a fun book. Don't remember the exact line, but I was
at the exchange over the dinner table when he tells his parents his superpowers are developing: "That's nice, dear"
Also, Superman/Batman #10. Not much of a fan of Turner art, but can't wait for the Darkseid showdown next issue!

I like Steve McNiven's artwork on Marvel Knight's "4", it gives me a Travis Charest art fix for the moment, plus McNiven has a bit of Sears in his art as well, but not as overwhelming influence as it was on Andy Smith.

But I'm lucky, I run a comic book store.

I read the first issue of Astonishing X-Men last night and have several questions. I've been away from anything X-Men related for years and only came back because Whedon is writing this. So, I'm waaay out of the loop.
What happened to Jean? What happened to the Professor? How long have Scott and Emma been an item? Why does Beast look even more, um, "cat-like"? And, only five members to this team? What's up with that?
Other than that: loved the first issue. Cassidy has always been one of my favorite artists and is even better here.

Jean = dead again (for now)
Professor = in Genosha to help rebuild
Scott and Emma together = some time now
Beast = secondary mutation
Team size = multiple teams in Marvel Universe

I had a light week at the store after last week's avalanche:
Swamp Thing #4 - it's too bad Diggle's leaving after only two more issues. This has been an excellent start for a difficult character and I don't like Will Pfeifer quite as much. The art has been a real treat, too.
Ultimate Fantastic Four #6 - so glad Bendis is off after this issue. Even for Bendis, I amazed at how he turned 2 or 3 issues of story into 6. It looked pretty, at least. Can't wait for Ellis and Doom to start next month.
Y The Last Man #23 - wonderful end to this arc. Some nice character moments, plot movement and the typically great cliffhanger at the end.

Also, this may be the wrong place, but can anyone recommend some of the better recent story arcs collected in Trade now for the X-Men? I'd like to read some of what I missed and pick up some of the better stories.

Very small week for me. Only Swamp Thing and Y: The Last Man. I also noticed that DC has released 2 softcover collections of Green Lantern/Green Arrow by Denny O'Neill and Neil Adams. I'll probably pick up volume 1 next week.

For those of you reading Superman, is there something going on that Im just not catching? If so clue me in, and if not were these last 2 issues the same? I just dont if there is something more there or are they just slowly building something up.

IMO the best X stories of the last few years have been in Exiles and Milligan's X-force run. Both of these series have been letting me down in the past year or so too, though.

My new "Why Aren't You Reading" column features FALLEN ANGEL this month. If you're not reading this book, check out the column over at www.paperbackreader.com and find out why you should be on board.

Wasn't it just a few weeks ago you were one of the many people not reading this book until I recommended it to you

Hahaha. Actually, I've had issues 8-12 in my hands for about 3 months, but I finally found the first 7 for a good price two weeks ago. Then again, knowing your track record, I'm sure at some point in time you said "Fallen Angel is a great book" and I grabbed what I could.
Oh, and I agree with the Knightly bit.

Wow this is fun reading comics again after 10 years being away. I love Peter Davids stuff, is he writing anything else?
