Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread
These are the details from Amazon. I ordered mine mid day on July 29th and it is in "shipping now" status. I should have it friday if it ships out today. Otherwise I won't have it until monday if it ships tomorrow since the 2nd day would be a saturday and UPS doesn't deliver regular on that day, I believe.
Amazon said the following:
Orders placed before 8 p.m. (PST) on August 1st will still ship by the August 27th release date.
Orders placed before 10 p.m. (PST) on August 5th will ship on or before September 4th.
Orders placed after 10 p.m. (PST) on August 5th will ship on or before September 8th.

Very favorable article re the new Kindle from today's NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/26/te...ef=todayspaper
The article concludes:
"Really, though, what makes the Kindle so successful isn’t what Amazon added to it; it’s what Amazon subtracted: size, weight and price. Nook’s two-screen setup makes it fussy and complicated. Sony’s additional screen layers make the E Ink less sharp.
In the meantime, certain facts are unassailable: that the new Kindle offers the best E Ink screen, the fastest page turns, the smallest, lightest, thinnest body and the lowest price tag of any e-reader. It’s also the most refined and comfortable."

I preordered mine on August 9th. Not too sure when exactly I will get mine. In preparation though I downloaded Calibre and have been messing around with it. Am I correct in assuming that it will convert e-pub books to be compatible with the Kindle and the quality of the book will remain intact?

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread
I've now spent almost a week with the Kindle 3 and I'm kind of in love with it. It is my first e-ink reader and my complaints about the device are really minor and completely made up for by the great customer service Amazon provides.
Typically I'm a pretty avid reader but I have seen that my amount of reading is definitely increasing with how easy it is to have the device always at hand and always with the exact book I am reading. The only thing I miss is reading in the bath tub.

bath tub is easy fix, just use a gallon ziplock bag, my nook with its case fits perfectly sideways, i just wrap the excess around the back and read away

Love my new wifi-only Kindle 3. It has reset itself a couple of times. I'm hoping it's not a major issue. My first e-book reader and really like it a lot...

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread
Btw, my Kindle 2 sold for $165 on Amazon, and it sold within about an hour of listing it. I was the lowest priced seller that had 100% feedback. There were a bunch in the $139 range, but they were all listed by newly launched sellers.
I think I'm going to wait for the M-Edge cases. I loved my M-Edge leather case for my Kindle 2, and I still have the light that fits in it.

Got mine yesterday and I love it.
Being that this is my first Ereader and I had no idea what the hell I was doing, I ordered a cheap written for Kindle book for 3 bucks and I'm really enjoying it. It's a chick book for sure but it's very well written and I may have to purchase another one from her!

Question: am I the one who wishes there was some sort of covering over the keyboard? I find it very distracting and I wish they would have developed some sort of casing to go over it.. I think it would make it easier to hold.

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread
Woo hoo! Mine came in this morning.
Yeah, I think it needs a bigger area with no buttons to grip. I'd prefer if they got rid of the page buttons on the side and moved the navigation functions into the direction pad.
Question for Calibre users: I have a bunch of ebooks that I've collected over the years -- Gutenberg books, PDFs, freebies from publishers -- but many of them don't have the title and author in the order Calibre wants, so I'm getting things like:
Title: Misborn Book 1
Author: The Final Empire
Series: Brandon Sanderson
The only way I've figured out to correct things is to go through each book, open the metadata editor, delete the information Calibre came up with, type the correct title in, and then use the online database to get the correct info (which doesn't always work if the title is common). Is there a faster way?

As for space to hold the thing, do you have a cover? I am using the cover with the built-in light and the added bulk makes it much easier to hold imo. Once I added the velcro to the back to lock it into the case then I never have to worry about it bouncing around in the case. It is, imo of course, way easier to hold (albeit heavier).

The guy writes all kinds of reviews on e-readers (but is Kindle focused) and when books go free for a day or are discounted to a buck or two he posts links to them on the Amazon shop. Before I even had a Kindle I built up a nice stockpile of some alright reads by just snagging the freebies.

Yes, I have a cover but sometimes I find myself wanting to hold it from the bottom and the keyboard keys are really annoying. Again, I'm surprised that they haven't designed something to slide over them.
Thanks for that link! I'll be surfing it regularly.

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread
I don't really mind. I like that there is significant space between the keyboard and the screen, so i can rest my thumb there. Works out well...

Ordered: August 13th
Shipped: September 2nd

I already have my chocolate-brown cover with light. I've been playing with it in anticipation. And the cover, too.

Anyone having problems with web browser? It worked fine for me the first day, but then last night in locked up while I was loading a page. Now any time I try to access the browser, it freezes and won't do anything until I hit the "home" button. There's a thread on Amazon with a couple other people saying they have the same problem.
