Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread
Thanks for the update about the library books becoming available on the Kindle. I'm not sure if every library is the same, but the Arlington, VA system shows how many copies are available, how many are checked out, and how many people are on the waiting list. I think this will be a huge money saver for me.

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread
Help Please!
I have a Kindle 3 / Wifi only.
I've always been able to get my wifi through out my house .. even sitting outside on my front porch.
The signal is stronger in different parts of the house, but I've always been able to get a signal.
Until recently.
I have to be literally sitting next to my router in order to get a signal.
Nothing's changed .. router is where it always is, Kindle is fully charged.
Help!

My first thought is, something has changed. Perhaps the signal on your router has dropped. Do you have another device, laptop, to test the signal with?
Secondly I would recommend you visit this website: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/
They discuss all things ereader there. Lot of info. You might find a thread that answers your question or you might post your own. Registration is free and you don't get spammed.
Finally, call Amazon customer service, they might have a solution.

Dear Customers,
Today we're announcing a new benefit for Kindle owners with an Amazon Prime membership: the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.
Kindle owners can now choose from thousands of books to borrow for free, including over 100 current and former New York Times Bestsellers — as frequently as a book a month, with no due dates. No other e-reader or ebook store offers such a service.
The Kindle Owners’ Lending Library features a wide array of popular titles, including Water for Elephants, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, and Fast Food Nation – plus award-winning novels such as The Finkler Question, motivational books like The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, biographies and memoirs including Kitchen Confidential, and Pulitzer Prize-winning books like Guns, Germs, and Steel.
We’re adding the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library to Prime membership at no extra cost — Amazon Prime remains just $79 a year, which gives you free two-day shipping on millions of products, plus unlimited instant streaming of almost 13,000 movies and TV shows.

Hey, that's awesome.
At least until Amazon pulls a Netflix and breaks up all the Amazon Prime perks into separate subscription services.

It cleared itself up.
Very strange. I think it was on my router or internet provider's part. Something wasn't quite right for a few days and then it was fine.
Weird.
Thanks!

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread
It might have been hasty, but I canceled my Fire pre-order. I just didn't want it to show up and have to deal with a return. However, I haven't pulled the trigger on the Nook Tablet yet. I borrowed my sisters Nook Color last night, and it seems kinda sluggish(browser, UI, page turning). I would imagine the Nook Tablet would be a little zippier with the dual core processors though. I also didn't like how the Nook Color handled forward & back buttons in the browser(you have to scroll to the top of the page to get to them). Maybe I'm spoiled by OSX Lion, but forward/back should be a simple swipe, not buttons.
I'm in no hurry to get one, so I figure I'll play with 'em both in store before I decide.
Barnes and Noble at least succeeded in having rethink their Fire purchase.

I thought about canceling my Fire preorder, but after looking at the specs for the new Nook, it seems to have little difference. With Amazon's services availible for the Fire, it's looking more robust as well as having the Amazon library where you can check out books. I think the Fire is the way to go, especially for the price.

Yeah, that's native support. It may have an app you can load that reads .cbr and .cbz files.

Having the iPad totally renewed my interest in comics.
Although the smaller than a page screen of the iPad bothers me a little bit. I think the even smaller screen of the Fire would drive me nuts.

I like comixology and the free issues but have a hard time seeing myself paying $3-4 per (previously discussed in the comics forum).

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread
I got the Nook recently and I plan on eventually rooting it and installing the Kindle app. So, I was grabbing some free Kindle books off Amazon when I accidentally ordered a non-free book. You long time ereaders probably know this stuff, but I found it interesting.
First, I'm sure we've all heard of the Amazon free lending for prime members, somehow Amazon feels this makes it OK to list some books as price = $0.00*For Prime Members. I'm all for them advertising the benefits of Prime, but it shouldn't make my shopping experience difficult and purposefully confusing. Amazon's regular search/browsing isn't that great either, but that's another matter.
Second, apparently you can't turn off Amazon's 1-click shopping for ebooks. I have it turned off for general purchases already precisely because I want to confirm any purchase before it goes through, but according to the rep I spoke with it's not possible for digital content.
Finally, the good news is it's easy to get a refund for digital content. Not as easy as it could be but still not difficult. Unlike their order status webpage for physical orders there is no automatic cancel/return option for digital purchases, but within 7 days you can call/chat/email the order # to CS and they will issue a refund.
For comparison the B&N Nook store confirms every purchase. On the device you have to click buy and then confirm. On the webpage it opens a new page with the book and charge amount for you to confirm the purchase. But, and it's a J-lo sized but, all purchases are FINAL. This also seems to be the case with Sony, Kobo and the Google store, with the possible exception of the ebook being defective. That's something I didn't know before this episode and I"m glad I found out.
