Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread

My charger cable for the Nook Color broke over the weekend so I had to pick up a new one. First off, if anyone ever has to get a new cable, order it online, it's 10 dollars cheaper than at an actual B&N store.

The best part of the trip though was walking through the Nook section, and they actually had a rooted NC as one of the display models to try. Has anyone else experienced this as if it's company wide, I think that's just a genius move on their part that will really push somebody's purchase their way.

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread

Had to call Kindle's customer service number for the first time yesterday, and I was super impressed. My husband's Kindle 2 had a "critical battery" screen and would no longer charge. Even though it was well out of warranty, they shipped us a new replacement Kindle today. Anyone know if B&N has the same policy on their Nook?

A friend of mine had a replacement Nook sent to him that was a refurbished one. He was told that was the policy, they did not use new ones as replacements. This was about 3 months ago so I'm not sure if the policy has since changed.

Was it still under warranty? What I'm wondering is if B&N will replace out of warranty Nooks, no questions asked, as Amazon does with older Kindles.

I believe it was, I'll find out though for sure. From what I've read on the B&N forums though it seems that once the warranty is over, they will try to repair but will not replace.

EDIT: It was indeed still under warranty.

Ok, good to know, thanks! I was considering getting a new Nook Color for my husband. He prefers reading on his iPad for the color/touchpad, but it's a bit too heavy and bulky. I think I'll wait and see what Amazon releases next instead. We got our replacement Kindle 2 in the mail yesterday. It was a brand new international version, and his Kindle was an original US only release that's been out of warranty for 2 years. Unbelievable customer service. Now I feel like a chump for getting an additional squaretrade warranty for my Kindle 3.

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread

From Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/01/b...o-nook-that/):

It seems dangling deals to lure consumers away from competitors is all the rage these days, and Barnes & Noble has jumped on the make-the-switch bandwagon, offering $315 worth of e-books to prospective buyers of its Nook e-reader. Starting today, when owners of those other devices tote their current e-readers into a Barnes & Noble store and buy themselves a new Nook or Nook Color, they'll get 30 free eBooks, with an apparent value of $315. Here's the catch -- because, you know there had to be one -- Barnes & Noble's won't let you pick the books for yourself. Those 30 free eBooks will come pre-loaded on a 2GB microSD card.

In other words, "$315" worth of public domain classics that you can get for free on Gutenberg.

Picross clone for Kindle (free):

Normally I don't play games on this thing, but this seems cool.

Or an ungodly amount of Harlequin romance novels.

Even if they are public domain, B&N releases many books under the B&N Classics Series...with a great deal of supplemental material. The EPUBS are formatted nicely to boot.

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread

Sooooo... I finally getting ready to jump on one of these ebooks. I guess my question is which one is currently looking like the best? Price of titles and quantity/availibility of content is most important to me. I just saw Stephen King's new book available for more than the hardcover price on Amazon. Do one of the other formats have better prices and/or equal number of titles as the Kindle?

Book selection and price is pretty much the same across the board right now. My recommendation is that you check out the various readers in person and find out which works for you (B&N has the Nook, Target has the Kindle, others vary).

I'm a Kindle man myself, but I would argue that the newest Nook is the my favorite reader on the market. Competition is good for all of us.

I love my Kindle...when im outdoors. At the beach, the pool, etc its absolute heaven.

All other times (indoors) i genereally go with my iPad's Kindle app. If my iPad had Kindle's battery life and no-glare acreen, I wouldnt need the Kindle period.

Does whispersync automaticaaly sync your book between your kindle and your ipad?

For those considering an ereader, here's a good place to research:

And any other devices you might have running the Kindle software (PC, phone, etc). For example, if I'm out and about and want to catch up on a book, I can read on my phone from wherever I was reading on my Kindle. Then, when I return home and pick up my Kindle I can keep reading from the new spot.

I'm one of those people who can't read the iPad screen for long periods of time without it bothering my eyes. So I use the Kindle exclusively for my reading (inside or out). The iPad though is absolutely perfect for short-term reading things like magazines or comic books due to the nice color screen. For longer times though I find myself distracted by push notifications from all the other apps I have on the device.

Yes, it syncs between the app and the Kindle if you are reading a book you bought from Amazon and not one you side-loaded yourself (also you have to keep wifi or 3G on which makes the battery drain a little faster).

That sucks. Most of my books are side-loaded, not purchased from Amazon. I use Calibre a lot.

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread

I just bought a Kindle, and have been checking out the free stuff, so far. I really wanted an easy way to go through short science fiction stories, so that's where I've started. It's amazing just how much is out there. Hopefully, just like the ipod revitalized my music interest, the Kindle will do the same for reading.

http://baen.org/library/books.asp

click on a book and the page for that book comes up. there is an option to email it to your kindle, or to download the mobi/epub/lit/whatever either compressed in a zip or uncompressed.
