The new Nook is awesome. I'm upgrading to it from my 3G Nook as soon as I get some money. Glad they kept the physical page turn buttons, those are necessary to me.

He said that, but he was fibbing a little. I guess the physical page turn buttons are disabled by default (you have to enable them in the settings). You can see them in the closeup - extremely long, thin lines on either side of the screen - that's where the buttons are.
There's also power and stuff. So it actually has a few more than he said.

This sucks, I was looking at getting a Kindle in the next 1-2 months, but now the new Nook has me debating which to get.

Flanking the screen are rubberish vertical page turn buttons — apparently you can decide to power these on in the Settings menu
Update: Oddly, Barnes & Noble won’t actually let us touch the devices now, but the video below shows some of the performance.

I think that particular reviewer is mistaken. The rep from B&N who demonstrates the nook in the video never mentions or uses side buttons.
I could find no other source who mentions page turn buttons. Can you?

I feel the same way. I am thinking about picking up an e-reader, and was going with the Kindle before Nook 2 and new Kobo were announced. I like the buttons for turning pages. I will definately wait to actually see these in person before deciding which one to get. Although I may not be able to see the Kobo as there are no Borders left in my area.

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread
I had a chance to play with a Nook Touch demo today (I assume that by this point most if not all Barnes and Noble stores should have them in stock) and I have to say I was impressed. It feels really good in your hands (the indentation in the back is a nice touch and the size/shape and weight are just about perfect). Front and back have a rubberized coating that makes it seem somewhat rugged.
The page turns are quick with no flash or ghosting (except every 6th page turn has a noticeable flash). I played with the touch screen a little and I was surprised at how responsive it is for things like highlighting words and sections of text. Its not as responsive as a capacitive touchscreen but its close enough that it shouldn't pose a problem.

My Kindle 2nd Gen that I gave my wife last year self-destructed. about 1/4th of the screen just went to shit on her. Wasn't dropped or stepped on/sat on etc.. I looked it up and it apparently it's a known deal. It's an older one but we're still gonna call Amazon just to see what they say.
Here's a pic I pulled off of google images that shows what happened. It's similar. I mean it LOOKS like physical damage like you would see on any LCD monitor/laptop screen, but the thing was treated with kid gloves..

Though this is a completely different situation than yours, back in December I ordered a Kindle for my mom for Xmas and it never showed up at my condo when the tracking said it was delivered. Waited a few days and then decided to contact Amazon. They overnighted me one that day with no hassle. I was truly impressed.

Nice. I bought it 11 months ago. It was a refurb through their warehouse site, but it looked brand new. Wife is gonna call them today, so hopefully we'll be good. Can't afford to replace anything right now. Hot water heater and A/C later, we're on the broke side lol.

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread
Got a Kobo Touch at the end of last week and I am pretty impressed. It is my first e-reader and I am glad i went with it. Went with the kobo because they are hooked up with chapters-indigo in Canada so it was easy for me to actually see one before purchasing.
It does lack page turn buttons but this doesn't bother me - you can just touch one side of the screen or the other to switch pages. Where i normally hold it is is easier to do that then to use buttons at the bottom of the device. Otherwise is is fast and responsive and haven't had an issue with it. Already finished my first book on it and look forwarded to many more.

Has anyone run into this problem? I pre-ordered Foster Hirsch's book on Otto Preminger a few months ago at $19.25, which was a bit much, but still cheaper than the hardcover. I got an email this morning saying it had been delivered to my Kindle, and out of curiosity I clicked the link to the product page to see if there were any editorial reviews yet. The first thing I notice is that the price has dropped to $14.99; I checked the email, and it said I'd been charged $19.25.
I fired off an email to Amazon CS asking why they didn't honor the pre-order guarantee and got back this message:
What the hell?

I'm sorry, we can't honor a lower price posted on Amazon.com and Amazon does not offer a price match guarantee. Our prices regularly change, and the price you paid for "Otto Preminger" was the lowest price we were able to offer at the time.

In some cases the publisher, not Amazon, sells the Kindle book or other content. In the case of "Otto Preminger", the price you pay has been set by the seller. You will see "This price was set by the publisher" on the product page here:

This goes back to when Apple announced their iBooks app and their new deal with publishers, going to an agency model. The publishers then forced that model onto Amazon as well. Most of the big publishers sell their own books now, at their own price point, on the Kindle platform. It would be like if you placed an order with a third party through the Amazon Marketplace, not all of Amazon's policies apply. It's also why you may get charged sales tax on Kindle purchases even if you normally buy tax-free from Amazon.

Got my wife a color Nook a few weeks ago. Hacked it this weekend (which is pretty easy), and can now run apps from the Android Market on it. This includes the Kindle app.
