This was lot of fun. I read it in a couple of days. Now I want to read some more Lawrence Block.

Re: What are you reading? (June 2009)

Finished Trunk Music, am still picking away on My Booky Wook, and have just started:

This is my third time reading it. The first time I loved it, the second time it definitely wasn't as great as I remember, so this will be the tie-breaker. I am reading all of the Michael Connelly books now.

It's hard to describe. I am really finicky with books and I don't finish a lot of them. I also mostly read non-fiction, and if I'm not learning anything while reading, I usually stop reading it.

I thought The Sex Lives of Cannibals was good, even if it was a mostly perfunctory look at life in one of the most isolated countries in the world. The problem with J. Maarten Troost as opposed to say, Bill Bryson, is that he offers up some startling fact, presents it for a paragraph or two, then forgets about it.* It's like he has Attention Deficit Disorder and he moves through a lot of topics that are intriguing but we never get a second look. This means that you get a fresh perspective on things and the book never gets scholarly, but it also means that you don't learn enough to even get a basic understanding of what is going on behind what you're reading. If you can let that curiosity go, then the book is entertaining.

* One example. Troost is in a multiple-island nation, and he says that each island is famous for something: knife fights, etc. One island is famous for its oral sex. He wonders why that is, then changes the subject.

Spent by Geoffrey Miller

Marketing and materialism through the eyes of an evolutionary psychologist. Excellent so far.

Book #26 (Half way point!)

I've wanted to read this for such a long time, I'm already 50 pages in to it and will probably have it done in a day or two!

Probably my favorite book of all time. Since it is pretty short, I intentionally took my time reading it because I didn't want it to end. I plan to reread it again in the upcoming weeks.
