^ I bought Perfect Strangers at a recent sale for literally the exact same two reasons you cite. Haven't watched it yet.

"Perfect Strangers" was the only one in today's selections I almost pulled the trigger on.

Lifeline! Nice!

I've also been holding on getting Vortex for a while, so I will finally grab that.

Yes! More HK Cinema! Can anyone recommend the Schizo/X Ray combo. I only watched Schizo and thought it was ok.

Here’s one I CAN’T recommend : Gina. It’s just too slow moving and not really a full on rape/revenge film like the description states . There’s the other plotline which takes up most of the film that isn’t very interesting . I guess if you want to see Celine Lomez dancing nude that’s a plus.

Clearly they were reading this thread. Now I just need one HK movie from them. Oops, two again if I count the new SEVENTH CURSE set. Tempted to use some points on that.

I picked up the SCHIZO / X-RAY set in the BF sale for (I think?) around the same price, maybe just slightly less. Based on the earlier Shout release, which I was upgrading (mainly for the extras) the movies are well worth watching even if they’re hardly outright classics. And in X-RAY you do get Barbi Benton helpfully demonstrating the benefits of a thorough medical examination.

Also, I’ll say that the similarly Quebec-lensed and faster-paced EVIL JUDGMENT is a reasonably decent alternative to GINA.

Then I'd probably steer you away from that one since I thought Schizo was the far better half of that double feature. X-Ray was a real chore to watch.

Coincidentally, I just watched Evil Judgment last night and didn't care for it. The horrible acting just put me off from the very beginning.

Lifeline is worth it? I like Johnnie To's movies. I don't love them.

Fair enough, although I didn’t think they were that bad! Definitely not an award winning cast, but the acting’s no better or worse than countless movies at that level, especially from up here. The acting in GINA is miles better, but it’s a dull movie by comparison, despite the pedigree, so I’ll stand by the recommendation, however keeping in mind that I only rated JUDGMENT a 6/10 so obviously it’s worth considering the pros and cons before forking over for it. And no doubt it will turn up cheaper down the road.

Probably goes without saying but this one is more worth the price to me as a Hong Kong film (and latter-day Shaw Bros. movie) rather than as a Johnnie To film even though his visual style is in evidence. It almost feels like him proving he could direct a Hollywood-ish, soap opera-ish ‘spectacle’ movie – BACKDRAFT, of course – before setting off on his run of stylish crime thrillers and romance pictures not long afterward. I’ve seen a lot of non-pro reviews that dump on it because they were oddly expecting what he later became known for instead of seeing it in the context of the mixed bag of projects that preceded it.

Like virtually every other title in this week’s deals, though, VS still seems to have tons of copies in stock so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a steeper discount in future sales for folks who are generally on the fence about HK stuff.

One I did take a chance on today: SEXMISSION. I usually find these eastern bloc sci-fi movies (even the comedies) are worth watching, even if I rarely keep them. Guess we’ll see with this one.

Re: Vinegar Syndrome - Subscriber Week Sale

I did order Lifeline because I'm such a HK film fan. Vortex too, because of Argento and Noe, although I admit that movies featuring older folks are not usually on my radar.

There were a few others I gave consideration to, bur ultimately passed on. Like Specters which actually looked good from the description but the trailer betrayed it. Cheese city. If Gina is worse than Evil Judgement, another easy call there. Considered Sexmission, but a quick glance at the stills showed a bunch of unattractive older Polish women so even copious nudity would not appeal to me (I hope that doesn't sound negative towards Polish women, some are just downright stunning, but man, they don't age well. OK, yeah that does sound negative. Sorry). House Where Death Lives looked slow and talky as hell just from the stills, so that was another easy pass. I'll wait till tomorrow for more purchases.

Re: Vinegar Syndrome - Subscriber Week Sale

Man, if I chose movies based on how poorly the people of various cultures age – men included – I could’ve saved myself a heckuva lot of time over the years, dammit! Maybe there’s something to it!

I ended up getting SISTER SISTER today as well. Don’t know much about it, and it’s likely destined for the resale pile, but it’s cheap enough. (also got LIFELINE, since I didn’t mention it earlier).

I wouldn’t mind giving the Home Grown Horror sets a spin some day, but even on sale I just can’t justify them. Worse, virtually all of them are from that late-80’s / early 90’s video store era that Paff mentioned a few posts back, where everything was kinda polished (not Polish!) and kinda bland and lacked the grain and grit you nearly always got with earlier B-movie fare. No great loss avoiding them, I guess.

I saw that VS is releasing a double feature Blu of The Seventh Curse (1986) and Witch from Nepal (1986) later this month. This will probably be as close to definitive versions of both movies that we'll ever see. A must have for October or whenever you feel like something off-beat.

I’m definitely leaning toward using some newly-acquired points for that set, although it’s worth noting (as I just did in more detail in the HD Talk thread) that 88 Films previously released an excellent limited edition and subsequent standard edition of SEVENTH CURSE in 2022, and then – almost on cue just this week – announced a release of WITCH FROM NEPAL in 2025. Since I’m a Hong Kong junkie, I’ve double-dipped on similar UK and US editions waaay more than I should probably admit, and I’ll inevitably do it again with WITCH, the artwork for which definitely shows more creative effort than what VS ended up using (frankly it even betters most of the original HK promotional materials). But having both in a single set from VS has its advantages.

I really hate to say it but I’m probably going to pass on one of the more recent HK releases (Eye for an Eye) because of said behavior of the main male characters in that film. They basically all treat their women like shit . Also there’s a part in the plot that bugs me near the end . The interesting thing is that these are basically the same thoughts I had when I saw this movie on a tape in 1990.

It’s similar to My Heart is that Eternal Rose but that one is way better in terms of merging the drama and heroic bloodshed aspects more seamlessly.

I watched some of Sister Sister . Couldn’t make it to the end . But it was ok if you like Jennifer Jason Leigh and Southern Gothic.

Looks like I get ‘em both in this sale.

Also cool to see TERRORNAUTS as the VSL title. I’ve picked up the Network UK DVD years ago when Amazon routinely dropped the prices on their vintage titles to a couple of pounds and thought it was a lot of fun. I was always surprised that some boutique over here didn’t pick it up even in the DVD era.

Not really strongly drawn to anything today but it feels weird not buying something. Anyone with a recommendation on today's deals?

Aside from A Man Called Hero which I just purchased, are there any other must buys on the Daily Deals?

The only one I’m considering is Hitcher in the Dark.

I did buy Five women for the killer and did enjoy that one. So I can recommend that one.

I’ve been lucky – so far – in this regard, but I’m sure my turn’s coming. They should really consider a goodwill gesture of just combining orders from the two sales, but I doubt they’ll do it. I’m in the group that doesn’t mind waiting dues to a massive backlog of stuff to watch here.

I finally picked up HITCHER today after procrastinating forever. I rarely find Italian horror films from the late 80’s to early 90’s worth keeping, and I suspect this will be no different, but I’m not averse to giving anything a spin at least once. I bought FIVE WOWEN in the summer sale (my invoice says it was a few bucks cheaper the ) but haven’t gotten to it yet.

I'm likely going to give THE RIPPER a try as well, even though everything everywhere seems to suggest I shouldn’t!

Also, I’ll second the recommendations for REBELS and ICEMAN, of course. And both are generally in the ballpark of previous sale prices, too.

Props to their customer service. They've refunded every request I've made. About $20 overall (so far) from my BF order.
I really hope I don't have to to reach out again. I don't like bothering CS.

Snagged Goin' South at that price. Also went for the non-slip version of Sales Girl from the Partner's page.

I watched this via the library here (barebones DVD, of course) just last month and thought it was excellent, and will probably grab the Blu down the road. I can probably count the number of Mongolian films I’ve seen on one-and-a-half hand, and none were contemporary and metropolitan like this one (think warlord epics, or art house pictures about rosy-cheeked, impoverished agrarian girls bonding with hawks or camels or whatever) so it was refreshing to see a story that can resonate with modern international audiences while taking local customs and attitudes for granted, which makes for interesting research after the film. Because of the country’s proximity to Russia and particularly China I wasn’t familiar with its political atmosphere or censorship standards, so the frank, often very funny approach to sex and sexuality plus the matter-of-fact nudity in a couple of scenes caught me pleasantly off guard as these are things you generally don’t see in films from at least one of the country’s neighbours. I’d love to see more movies like this from there. As mentioned, Mongolian movies picked up for western distribution usually come from a fairly narrow vein.
