Re: Vinegar Syndrome - Subscriber Week Sale
Seems like Something Weird has put the rest of their shorts collections on YouTube and over the past month or so has moved on to uploads of various rare B-movies from their archives. Makes me wonder just how much has been reserved for potential Blu-ray releases going forward.

AGFA Intermission Time is that good? (which means, no Todd, I don't have that one)
Trailer compilations I get, but I've seen a handful of those vintage "Let's all go to the lobby" clips on other Something Weird discs, and they wear out their welcome after about 4 minutes. I do not want one of those Castleberry hamburgers, no thank you.

Re: Vinegar Syndrome - Subscriber Week Sale
To my knowledge, I have all of the trailer comps released by various companies so far, and just like the Intermission disc I find they work better in small doses, or as background/party noise if that’s one’s preference. Otherwise they start to blur after a while, especially if the genre focus is narrow (like the various horror trailer comps, or Severin’s kung fu trailer comps), especially as the ‘tricks’ of the trailer trade become more apparent and repetitive. The Intermission disc does indeed have a plenty of overly well-known, silly cartoon dancing food and unappealing color-faded imagery of greasy burgers and the like, but there’s more diversity of content collected there than one might expect, including plenty of very localized, regional business commercials, PSAs, ads from national brands, holiday themed spots, etc. Still, considering there’s something like 12 or 14 hours of it in the set, it’s probably crazy to consume more than an hour or two at a time (which probably explains why Something Weird’s original tapes rarely exceeded two hours, and they stuck other collections of them on YouTube at that length as well).
Regarding their ‘mixtapes’, I was kinda on the fence about those when I got the first AGFA TRAILER SHOW Blu-ray. I liked that it played almost a like stream-of-consciousness experiment or borderline art installation (which in a sense seems to be how they’re presented in rep cinemas), but I disliked that they didn’t include the uncut source materials as supplements. Obviously other buyers must have felt the same way as Vol. 2 included the mix tape and its source material separately. The Intermission disc more or less does that too. (Also, I’m not sure how much I trust those low quantities on the VS site as it doesn’t seem to be the kind of title they’d have a limited licence for - it’s basically all public domain stuff at this point, I would think).

The 2nd AGFA Trailer Show disc has all of the audio in mono, even though there are several trailers that were done with stereo and in some cases even 5.1 (such as the Regal Pepsi Girl trailer), it also claims “uncut” versions of the trailers but that’s only for the movie trailers and not the intermission stuff.
Slowly going through the “Intermission Time” discs, biggest flaw there is that they’re taken from standard def analog video masters. I saw a couple trailers in the “mixtape” with that dreaded “SWV” on the screen, but none during the first volume of actual trailers I watched. Still waiting for a definitive collection of these in proper HD, and properly chaptered as well.

Nice review. The caveats (including the audio issue, which I wasn’t aware of) are tolerable but enough to make me wait for a sale, although that may not happen as the standard edition is now down to low three-digit quantities. I’m glad they included the ‘uncut’ trailers this time around because I run hot-and-cold on the mixtape tinkering, and volume 1 didn’t include the originals at all.

They did do the sound mostly right on the first volume, even leaving the sound reader in stereo mode during mono trailers (the “right” way is to switch it to mono during those, but that’s one rule I’ve disagreed with- let’s hear all the noise leak into all the channels!)

VS is also going to have a curated selection of titles on sale for Valentine’s Day.

And keep in mind that the original "purpose" of the Valentine's Day Sale that began about 5 years ago, was to offer discounts on the Vinegar Syndrome snuggle films, which are now under the Melusine brand. So make sure to also visit that site as well. And from experience, I can tell you that if you want the "add to my order" free shipping, you have to buy from VS before you smut it up over at Melusine. Can't do it the other way around.

I just wanted it on the record that "smut it up" made me snort/laugh.

I actually thought "snuggle films" was my better attempt at humor there, even if I did steal the term from Marge Simpson.

Don't see much at the sale that interests me. Maybe The Lost Films of Herschell Gordon Lewis, but I have to admit, I'm not especially enamored of the found films of Herschell Gordon Lewis.

By the way, they've posted the advice I gave a few posts back, that you need to buy VS first if you want a Melusine purchase to add to your order. They've also posted what a lot of you did back in January; if you have an unfulfilled item in your order history and that item goes on sale for less, they'll refund you the difference. Just gotta ask.

Hmmm, seems like I own everything I might of wanted on the first day. And recs?
VS texted me a 10% off coupon the other day so I am hoping there is something larger I can use that on.

I got caught up in FOMO and purchased the Iron Eagles box set, though I'm not convinced I even really want it.
It's sold out now, so I may end up selling it for what I bought it for when it gets here. I'll have to see how I feel once it ships.

All right. Broke the dam on day 2 with two purchases: A Fat Wreck and Through the Fire.
We'll see if I cave more throughout the week, now that the "add to my existing order" feature has been unlocked.

Any recommendations for Untold Story 2? That’s about the only thing that looks interesting to me.

I’ll recommend it for sure (keeping in mind I’m a little biased toward most HK filmmaking). It certainly delivers on the Category III rating and the kind of bald-faced anti-China subtext that Hong Kong filmmakers are literally forbidden from depicting now, which really makes it a time capsule of an era of largely unbridled freedom over there. The comic aspects represented by Anthony Wong’s police investigation can seem unrealistically silly and puerile but are likewise pointed in many ways. I do wish it had more supplements, but for $18 it’s pretty good value.

I bought it but haven't watched it yet. I knew when I added it to my cart that it's a sequel-in-name-only, but bought it anyway for the reasons Brian mentioned; a love of 90s era Hong Kong movies, especially Cat IIIs.
I'm just pissed that Last Gasp isn't on the sale pages. I mean, I already have a copy, but is only one copy enough to have?

Pretty lackluster for me so far. I picked up Six String Samurai only to keep my VSU collection complete and today I grabbed Touch. Not a huge fan of it, but I generally like Paul Schrader and maybe I’ll come around on it.
Also ordered Iron Angels before it shoots up in price.

Re: Vinegar Syndrome - Subscriber Week Sale
Anyway, this thing is pretty dull. What kills it are the Skeet Ulrich parts (or casting ) as the lead character. Walken and Fonda are fine but whenever they get to those scenes with the Juvenal character…zzzzz
