Barnes & Noble Criterion Sale 2017!

OK gang, next Tuesday starts the annual July B&N Criterion Sale! I'm only picking up a few titles this go around since I've been constantly buying from Amazon:
  • Wim Wenders: The Road Trilogy
  • Roberto Rosselinin's War Trilogy
  • L'Argent
How about you?

Stalker

I'm literally running out of shelf space. I need to figure what I could dump, I can't add more shelves in our small place.

Re: Barnes & Noble Criterion Sale 2017!

Since they don't offer the free membership anymore I'm going to wait until the middle of the sale to buy the membership use it for summer/fall/summer and then wait for the next sale and do winter/summer/winter. 3 sales justifies the membership. Gotta squeeze every dime now that coupons are a no go.

I'll be picking up:

The Before Trilogy
They Live By Night
Straw Dogs
The Lodger
Lost In America
Ghost World
Stalker
Rumble Fish
Being There
Buena Vista Social Club
Blow Up
Fox and his Friends
His Girl Friday
Kes
The Exterminating Angel
Mildred Pierce.

Don't disagree with the general logic, but the last bit is still an assumption until at least Tuesday. Not terribly unreasonable assumption, but it's still not a given. 14 1/2 sales allowed store coupons, 1 1/2 didn't

The 5/50 transaction to date has always worked so at least fingers crossed for that one.

There is a possibility of a second July Member Appreciation (Member 20% Discount instead of 10%) -- zero rumors, but since it did happen last July at least a chance. Usually we don't know about those until a few days ahead

Re: Barnes & Noble Criterion Sale 2017!

Heads Up on at least something that may be active or possibly a short window. No Criterion Language YET on the coupon or the exclusions. After midnight ET tomorrow that is certainly possible to change immediately or at 2am or 6am or not at all. More than one of the coupons last year had at least a small window of use before it was shut down

"Online Coupon VACATION Details
For each customer, this coupon can be redeemed only once per billing address online at BN.com.

This coupon is valid at BN.com from July 10, 2017 at 12:01am to July 13, 2017 at 2:59am Eastern Time.

This coupon entitles you to 10% Off Your Order of $35-$59.99 or 15% Off Your Order of $60 or More. The discount will be deducted after all other eligible discounts, including (if applicable) the standard Member discount, are applied."

The membership thing is too much like Prime for me; I wouldn't use it enough to get value.

Obviously the main thing is what extra coupons you could use above the 10% discount amplifies how few items it would take to break even. Under best of circumstances you could probably break-even spending as little as $80 ($55 on Criterions and $25 Membership). If you accumulate some 10-20% discounted Gift Cards then the OOP costs could be even less.

Lots of silliness below
Spoiler:
Worst case scenario -- absolutely no coupons. 13 Criterions in a year to break even IF you buy nothing else all year

If you 6 $19.99 Criterions per year are able to use even two $5 off 50 coupons that's $22 of your membership even it you didn't buy anything else. the 5/50 codes
have always worked. So 48x2 + a 7th item @ 18 + $25 Membership == total $141

Assuming all coupons are active you could use 3 20% coupons, a 5/10 coupon, and a 5/50 of 4 items (a reach, but not unheard of). If you can talk the 25 and 30% coupon in Nov then thing even get better, but leave that for another day

14.39 x 3
12.99 x 1
-5
$51

vs best no membership deal
4 15% coupons -- $68

Add 2 more items separately with the new 5/10 coupons -- $13 vs $17 each nonmember
So Breakeven is 6 items and $100.

IF you have a double discount Member Appreciation day like last year AND coupons then I could break even with around around $80 total on 4-5 items

This for me also. Although I am reconsidering a Prime membership. I find I'm making the vast majority of book purchases from Amazon as their prices are substantially lower than B&N even with a coupon.

I get B&N non-member coupons (15% mostly, but sometimes 20% off, 25% rarely) every so often, but the past few years I've been buying so little stuff from B&N. It doesn't make any sense to pay them X amount of dollars per year for the privilege of paying them a little less on a rare occasion. B&N isn't a warehouse club offering me substantial discounts for being a member.

Now and then I buy a magazine at B&N and I'd probably buy more if coupons would apply to them, but they're always an exclusion.. although I don't think they always were. Occasionally, I'll find a collectable at some considerable discount on a clearance table. Sometimes a coupon will be good for them and that will push me to make the buy.

Like a lot of it, it depends on what you want and when. Most of the new books I want tend to be close to release and on BN Best Selling list so with the 30 or 40% off and Coupons I often find those to be 20-30% cheaper than Amazon. Al Franken's latest book for example was $4+ less on BN.

Last Christmas I ordered a bunch and 6 out of the 8 were at least 20% less (2 for 40% less) than Amazon and 2 were cheaper or the same on Amazon.

Re: Barnes & Noble Criterion Sale 2017!

It appears the VACATION code details just had Criterion added to the web exclusions that curiously it just mentions DVD for now. The code still works on Criterions so they apparently haven't flipped teh exclusion switch just yet.
