Third store was the charm. Reports of V/H/S on bluray are out there too. I’m going on a DT rampage my next day off to see what I can find!

Re: Dollar Tree BLU Rays!

Finally found a store today with some DVDs/Blu-rays. The most interesting finds were BDs for television mini-series RiverWorld and Tin Man. Also some BBC DVDs like Class: Season One.

But I also found the craziest thing I've ever gotten from Dollar Tree - the complete DVD set for Queen's Blade II. Anime fans will know what I'm talking about. Out of print niche set only sold through anime outlets. I have no idea how it slipped into this batch. Some distributor must have mixed it in by accident.

Re: Dollar Tree BLU Rays!

My local store had stuff out this morning. I was proud of myself for putting quite a few things back after considering the growing unwatched pile.

The only title I purchased on BD was a documentary called Sunset Strip

On DVD, i picked up a 2 disc SE Andy Goldworthy: Rivers and Tides and AMC's Hell on Wheels: Season 4

All of these were complete blind buys.

This may derail the thread but I’ll still ask - why are they still producing such boatloads of DVDs ???

Re: Dollar Tree BLU Rays!

I think a lot of "average" people are choosing dvd over blu because:

1. Price

2. They don't care about the improved quality

3. The copy guards & PUO's/UOP's/PUP's on (mostly) major studio Blu's really are a pain for the end user. While I lean blu these days, I really hate it when I push stop & the player doesn't remember where I was on the disc. And of course every studio has different work arounds (& a few have none as far as I can tell).

Required firmware updates are also a pain for the AVERAGE user. & the copy guards don't stop any techy or pirate, but they raise havoc on the Average user.

Another case of the content industry shooting themselves in the foot.

I would imagine the economies of scale on DVD at this point makes them much cheaper to make then blu-rays.

This has always aggravated me. You'd think with an advance in technology, this is the least a freaking Blu-ray could do. Nope, back to disclaimers. And can someone tell me of what use BD-Live is, other than for previews?

Re: Dollar Tree BLU Rays!

BD-Live is basically BD-Dead now. There were a few features that looked neat but by the time I had it hooked up (2010, not exactly late in the game) many of them had already been taken off-line. Right now with most BD-Live discs it will tell you your player is not connected to the internet, even when it is- they just went offline and didn't even leave any sort of message saying that. I checked out the Fox and Universal "portals" while they were still available, the previews on them never got updated even once- they were showing movies "coming soon to theaters" that had long come and gone and now in the bargain bins.

It's due to Walmart. The indie and budget labels over produce boatloads of DVD units for Walmart. Notice how most Echo Bridge DVDs land at Dollar Tree - they were only manufactured in the first place so Walmart could make their bargain DVD bins look full. The major studios wouldn't meet Walmart's asking price but Echo Bridge has no problem dumping loads of ultra-cheap DVDs on the market.

When each Walmart in the country needed movies to fill their bins, that is a lot of useless product that never sold.

As for BD-Live, the major studios officially abandoned it around 2012 or so. I believe it was Sony and Universal that were so hyped about online features.

Kroger (Fred Meyer here) used to also get the Echo Bridge for their dump bins, but at least locally they stopped carrying 80% of their movies last year including the dump bins.

Wow! Guess I missed that boat. It was always such a non-factor of a feature.

Re: Dollar Tree BLU Rays!

I had a trip planned out of state this week and stopped by 3-4 stores on my route. Each one had a small number of things on the front table or in another area of the store. Despite the limited selection, I still found things which were new to me:

DVD
The Angry Beavers: Season 1 & 2
The Death of Superman
The Office: Second Series (BBC)

BD
Cheap Thrills
Conan O'Brien Can't Stop
Greed in the Sun
Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You
Red vs Blue: Season 10
Super Bowl XLIII Champions: Pittsburgh Steelers
Super Bowl LI Champions: New England Patriots

I own a few of those BDs from previous waves, but on DVD.

Re: Dollar Tree BLU Rays!

I've probably found more interesting DVDs this wave than BDs. Lots of DVD releases from the BBC I've never seen before.
