Anyone know when Best Buy typically restocks?

All the ones I want are showing as unavailable.

I agree 1000%. I only traded 1 DVD for Red Dawn. They don't have any New release-Catalog titles that I want and the only new release I have any interest is Prometheus 3D but I'm going to PM that sucker at Target or Walmart instead and save me a dvd.

Re: Apparently U&S is back on October 7th

I've traded in three times so far with varying degrees of success. My standard method is to come in with the DVDs and just walk around with them until I find what I want, and then go to Customer Service to get the coupons and check all at the same time.

1st trip (Sunday): Went in and started looking around with my DVDs. Blue Shirt walking around asked if I was trading in movies, and said I could do it at Customer Service, or at the Game Trading station. I found a few movies, and went up to the Game Trading area, as Customer Service was really backed up. It turns up that the original Blue Shirt was wrong, and you can only do the U&S at Customer Service. Go up there with three movies (only two were eligible due to one being $7.99, although there was no tag on the shelf). Traded in 4 anyways, as I knew I'd find other stuff, so they just gave me two physical coupons stapled to my receipt, and I was out the door.

2nd Trip (Tuesday): Go to another store with my two left-over coupons and another stack of DVDs. Grab Prometheus, I Spit on Your Grave, and Cast Away. Needed one additional coupon, so I handed over my DVD at Customer Service. Coupon wouldn't accept on Cast Away (I'm sure she only scanned two coupons). I told her the coupon didn't take, and she looked in the ad and said "Not valid with special offers. This is on sale." I explained that all of the movies I was buying were on sale, and she wouldn't budge. So I just took my DVD back and told her to keep Cast Away.

3rd trip (Wednesday): Went in with 5 DVDs again. Grabbed 6 movies (including the Kevin Smith Collection for $4.99). Tried to do everything in one transaction, but the last U&S coupon didn't take the $5 off on one of the eligible items. I think it tries to take the money off of the first 5 blu-rays, and if it's not eligible, it just doesn't register. The Customer Service guy manually took the $5 off the last title.

On a side note, only one of the three stores I've visited had made the transition to combine the blu-rays and DVDs. I looked around for only a couple minutes, and left disgusted. At the other two stores (that I actually traded stuff in at), I made complete passes through the blu-ray section looking for things to purchase.

Traded for another $9.99 (4.99) title, no problem, to answer my own question.

Today I got:
ATM 4.99
Deadgirl 4.99

...for the horror challenge.

The Holyoke, MA store had multiple copies of Magic, for anyone interested in travelling across the country. Also, copies of many horror movies I paid 2x-4x as much for. What a pisser.

The colossal remodeling disaster hit this store, and I'm assuming Hadley, MA, as they were "under construction" last time I checked. Took me like 4x as long to get through it.

Quick Question, I got Prometheus like so many, does the 3D version have more bonus features? I bought one cuz its the only one that mentioned the 3.5 hr documentary and there were about 3 copies left. Odd that the regular bluray wouldnt have the same shit.

Not odd at all. With 3D sales lackluster at best the studios have to do something to sell them. Now they can point to the good numbers for this 3D when in reality a good many of those sales are for the documentary, not the 3D.

I remember last time they had U&S I brought a DVD in early in the promotion and got a voucher. Then I brought another in about a week later and got a xeroxed voucher (and was told to show that with my U&S receipt). I guess it depends on when they run out of vouchers...or if a particular store even gets them at all.

You're probably right at the fact the 3D sold well more because of the doc and not so much the 3D. But for those interested in the 3D or plan to upgrade their TV, the 3D presentation is perhaps the best ever released. Arguably better than Avatar.

Even the stock levels on sale items sucked. I found zero copies of Alien movies, zero copies of xmen and zero copies of AVP. I don't know how they could have fucked up worse. Their selection of catalog titles is worse than either Walmart or Target. I think I'm done with them ... unless it's a sale item and I can get there at opening on the first day. Otherwise, forget it.

I agree. I always jump on this sale but end up regretting it. They have nothing but new releases from present to 6 months back. That's it... and like you said no catalog titles. Next week has at least 2 titles and hopefully some Bond titles.

Just chiming in, but yes, 3D is just a dud, movie studios don't want to admit it, and electronics manufacturers have already signed-on so the consumer is basically fucked. I've been watching how the features have been slowly moving onto the 3D releases, and I'm not impressed...but certainly not surprised.

Whoa, what do you mean dud? I was going to get a 3D TV eventually (on a side note, I can turn 3D on and off right? IE choose if I want 3D playing or not?) but are you saying that its a dying technology that may not end up even being supported any more?

Yep, you can turn 3D off. Most TV's also have a feature to turn non-3D stuff into 3D, if you're in a weird mood or something. My father has one, and I watch it occasionally. It'd be nice to have one for the handful of catalog classics that are starting to be released in 3D like Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Re: Apparently U&S is back on October 7th

Ravenous,

Feel free to get a 3D HDTV, as they should display normal video just fine and I'm assuming they are just a typical television with a "3D" switch. This is just my opinion. The technology will be here, but whether it's a success is questionable. Whether a television is really worth the "3D" technology, is up to you, and whether you really enjoy it. I just can't stand watching television with glasses on. I'm not that old yet. :)

I would save a few bucks, buy a higher quality television that isn't 3D--you will pay a premium for that word--and just get a Blu-ray player that is 3D. Because 3D material should play just fine on a normal television. Spend the extra money on a quality Blu-ray player.

In other related events, I got House of the Devil and Innkeepers for $4.98 ($2.49 a piece). For some reason, the BB Rep rung me up, applied the coupons then applied another coupon I got for being a BB Rewards member. Not sure how that happened, but I wasn't going to argue and spend another 15 minutes in the store.

Re: Apparently U&S is back on October 7th

My friendly neighborhood Best Buy clerk basically gave me double U&S coupons today. I tried to buy 5 Blus with 5 coupons. He scanned one of the coupons 5 times and put the other 4 in my bag as he said, "my gift to you." So for 4 of the 5 DVDs I traded, I received $10 each in store credit.

Now I'm confused. If you get a non-3d tv, and have a 3d capable blu-ray, does that matter? I mean at this point, don't all 3d Blu-rays come with non-3d versions? Or is there some advantage to playing 3d Blus on 2d tvs that I don't know about?

No you're right. No advantage. 3D blu-rays also include 2-D versions. In order to see something in 3D, you need a capable player, a capable TV, and a 3D encoded blu-ray. Just watch the 2D versions until you get a set and a player that can take advantage of 3D. You won't be able to watch the 3D version if you dont have a 3D TV even if you watch in on a 3D capable player. Just do what you were originally planing on doing, you were right.

ya what the hell is going on with Best Buys bluray section? movies were all over the place, unorganized, selection was pretty terrible too, all in a very small area, don't remember it used to being like that

traded in Best of Will Ferrell and Matrix 1 & 2 for Moon and X-Men 1 & 2

other movies i wanted were under 10 bucks

Finally visited the Best Buy and participated in this U&S. The reorganization is a joke. Took me twice as long to try to pick something out. Criterions were all over the place.

Only picked up:

I Spit on Your Grave (2 pack)
Red Dawn

I think I might have picked up the last two in the the store. I'll go to the other one with better selection and see if it's as big a clusterfuck as this one.

Re: Apparently U&S is back on October 7th

I think one of the major problems with the store reset is that if they were going to change to where all versions of each movie were together, they should have just gone alphabetically instead of sticking with genres. Now you have to guess where the movie may have ended up. The only sections should have been children's, regular movies, TV, and anime.

For those speculating, check the stores next week. As soon as the trade and save kicks in more, the restocking will begin. Some of the front lane titles may end up back at 9.99 or so since there is a reset of this section on Sunday, in case you are interested in those titles.

Found one of my all time favorites horror titles in bluray today, Re-Animator. First time I saw it in that version, though I know it came out a little while ago. Of course with my luck it probably goes to 9.99 next week!

Agreed that Best Buy's blu-ray and DVD section is a mess ever since they remodeled the stores.

This is also something I've noticed at Wal-Mart as well. There's no rhyme or reason as to where anything is placed. Bargain titles are mixed in with new releases and tv shows, DVDs and blus are mixed together, there are smaller sections that are DVD only and blu-ray only.

Target isn't quite as bad; the ones I've been to have a big section for blu-rays, but their DVD section is kind of a mess. There's no real section for new releases, and you have to hunt them down. A few high profile new releases will get an end cap, but others you have to hunt for.

This seems to be a trend in retail, and not limited to Best Buy.

soundman2 10-11-12 08:13 AM

Re: Apparently U&S is back on October 7th

I wish they would just have NEW release and Disney in Seperate place and EVERYTHING else just alphabetically arranged period. Walmart is the worst - looks like a 5 year old arranged their DVD/BD sections.

Regarding 3D TVs - many good 3D TV also tend to have excellent 2D picture. Panasonic plasmas are perfect example. Price depends on how high you go in models ..GT / VT etc. as oppose to if it has 3D or not.

Most of us, including myself have a bunch of 3D BD lying around, since they came as a bundle and did not really cost anything extra. At some point if I decide to upgrade my HDTV - will definitely keep 3D option in mind

Back to U&S - there are some decent 3D title available ( combo packs ) for $15. Even if you do not use 3D disk yet - you are still getting BD/DVD/DC. good deal in my opinion.

If you look at the new release sections at BB that's where most of the mainstream new releases will be, the two recent release racks usually toward the front of the store, and the new release end caps for music. But something less mainstream is just put inline, so it is harder to find if you don't have a particular title in mind.

Hmmm, apparently my stores haven't changed anything. If I understand you guys right, they've now mixed DVD's with BD's, and are sorted by genre?!? Thankfully, not by me, at least not yet...
BD's have been alphabetized for ages, with the exception of the few bargain areas ($6.99, $9.99, and $12.99 titles), special endcaps, and 3D titles/children's titles/TV seasons. There is a new release area near the front of the store (a 4-sided rack). I hope my stores don't change. I rarely have problems finding anything. If I can't find what I want in the New Releases, I can usually find it in the aisle, alphabetized...

Anyway, I have another 6-8 discs to trade-in, but am laying low for now. There isn't anything else I want this week, and only one I want next week, but you never know what the future holds.

Some stores have shrank the movie section and mixed the formats. One of the 3 stores I visit has done it (I didn't know until I walked in with trade ins and couldn't find a thing). I think it is for less busy stores, however that is just a theory.

Stopped by BB today and first thing is that the movies are still separated for now. When they convert it will take a little getting use to, but I don't see it being a big problem. I've wanted them to combine their music cd's for years now. It would be great to see all the movies in alpha order except for Childrens/Family/Kids. So today for $4.99 I bought:

Expendables
Friday the 13th uncut
Incredible Hulk
Total Recall MBE
Friday the 13th killer cut

The store was sold out of Red Dawn. I'm hoping Prometheus will be on sale on Black Friday. Just one more thing, I checked my receipt for the dvd's I turned in and there was not an expiration date on them. I'm grateful I was helped by a cashier and manager that took my old coupon.

You are looking for the Red (Special Edition) version. It's still listed at BB.com (SKU 1780074). You can ask your local BBY to look up that SKU to see if they have it available (or if it's available locally).

I don't mind the combined DVD and Blu-Rays (I guess it makes sense) but at least 75% of the blu-rays in our store didn't have prices. I wasn't going to figure out how to check each one that I was interested in (looking for a $10 or $15 title to use upgrade and save) and only found two $10 titles that I was mildly interested in purchasing. They don't do upgrade and save at customer service but referred me to the video game section. Nobody was there and I finally gave up and got nothing...
