KING KONG, THE MALTESE FALCON, THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, OCEAN'S 11? Nothing! No deals so far this season. Why? Are they just too new?

Humbuggery at work here, methinks.

Huh if this movie was a stock it would be on a death watch.

The DOTD is the full 24, said part is I bought each set for my GF. This had to be the hardest set I have ever put together. I should have waited. Why not a Blu-ray the movie is down from $12 to $5 (order) right now.

Got Sound of Music, love box sets (BTW what is the gold box in it?). By the time I send back the other one I got last week (ok I'm bad) and all my Amazon GC total cost $1.97 (if you do not add the refund for the other one)..

I'm really hoping that they have all there (Alice, Batman, and Watchmen) forsale at $14.99.

If they have Sanford and Sons & What's Happening over 50% I'm in. Doctor Parnassus has anyone seen? Is it a good blind buy?

For those interested, I saw on slickdeals that you can get the Hancock blu-ray for $ 3.99 after using coupon GRHORNET (if you haven't used it yet)

And I have it in my Gold Box $9.97, or about the same price as B&M stores. Time to pick it up I think. Didn't get a chance to see the movie in the theater.

Do you know what other titles the coupon can be used for?

Around black friday people mentioned that it could be used for Pineapple Express, You Don't Mess With the Zohan, Superbad and Ghost Rider. I'm not interested in any of the titles, so I'm not sure.

I think that 1) they ARE too new for decent price drops and 2) older classic catalog titles don't tend to sell in volumes that lead to good price drops. And classic movie fans will often pay whatever it takes, as Criterion has shown.

That's the answer right there. The only pre-1970's WB catalog title I've seen on Amazon for $9.99 or below is 2001.

That's correct. Apparantly it is a one time code for each account, so if you've used it before it probably won't work again. 'Hancock' is the cheapest movie it will work on, with the next one been 'Superbad' for $9.99 before coupon.

Went ahead and picked up a copy of 'Hancock' to add to the collection

Is selling in high volumes what makes them drop in price on Amazon?

I could believe they have some complex algorhithm for how they do their pricing involving sales, inventory, etc; yet I could just as easily be convinced they have two monkies hitting keyboards with their tails to set the prices.

Hancock is $6.99, add to your cart and apply the code GRHORNET and it drops to $3.99 (ships free if you have PRIME, $2.98 if not).

EDIT: (Oh, it's been mentioned already, nevermind.)

Thanks, much appreciated. I used it to pick up Hancock as a filler title for an order. For $3.99, why not?

While the monkey scenario makes for an amusing image, yes I am pretty sure that low volume but high quality—trashy stuff is often very cheap—BDs don't draw the price drops that more recent high volume titles do.

Why lower the price of North by Northwest (July 2009), for example, when fans of the movie keep buying it slowly but steadily? Would dropping the price to $10 allow Amazon to move 50,000 copies? Would they make any money if they did? Answer: probably not because the studio doesn't have a lot of excess stock to move and they know that the BD will be a slow but steady seller for years to come.

I'm just guessing, but I think that a lot of big price drops are just studios or distributors moving excess stock with incentive pricing for retailers. They sell as many as they can at high prices for a few weeks or months when the title is hot. Then they turn to routine catalog pricing going forward.

Those of us who are patient know that we will get good deals on most new release titles if we wait. But that strategy doesn't seem to work for older classics, save for a few very high profile titles (Casablanca, Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz). (Famous though it is, The Maltese Falcon is not is the same league as those titles in general popularity.)

My 2¢.

I went with Ghost Rider in using the $3 discount. I liked it better than Hancock and rather pay a few bucks more for a movie I liked. The first half and second half of Hancock feels like two different movies.

Not to redact your whole post (I didn't want to get scolded for this not being a bargain post so I'm trying to keep it short! ) but; understood. I read 'volume' differently (as in, it being the end all be all, which it isn't) in your first post than in your second where you explained it as a function of titles that hold their value consistently vs flash in the pan titles they have to make their money on "while the gettins good".

So far as the big drop pricing, you are 100% correct AFAIK.

Off the top of my head, others that fit into this category are BULLITT, THE DIRTY DOZEN, WHERE EAGLES DARE / KELLY'S HEROES, and THE SEARCHERS.
