Picked up 'Heat' and 'Gran Torino' for $6.99 - couldn't pass it up really.

I know right? My roommate is getting annoyed of having to get off his ass, away from Call of Duty: Black Ops, and walk 6 feet from the couch to answer the door for the UPS guy/hot girl...I've been cause of many a death for him in the multiplayer. DAMN YOU, AMAZON!

Thus the Blu devotees and those who appreciate a more high end viewing experience are only going to get older and be looking for titles from their personal history.

It's a shame that the studios seem to have established the impression into the marketplace that only RECENT movies will benefit from the technology. I've said it before in these forums: Why is dreck like LEATHERHEADS on Blu and not THE GREAT ESCAPE?

I understand your feelings on the matter, but a release has only one chance to make money for the studio. Perhaps 65 percent of a studio's revenue on a title are in the first week of release. That's because the video is featured in the marketplace and the studio keeps 100 percent (full Retail price) of sales. A store does not get a penny for a first week release, in fact, if they discount it off of full retail price they are actually taking a loss. So to maximize that strategy a lot of people need to buy it in the first week. As early adopter Blu-Ray sales skew young and geeky, it's not a great strategy for titles like The Maltese Falcon. Said another way, would you release a big hitter like Lawrence of Arabia now or wait until more households have blu-ray players that care that Lawrence of Arabia has been released? Yes, it would be great if a studio had the vision to build the marketplace by releasing titles to do just that. But studio execs don't keep their jobs by being visionaries. They keep them by making money right now.

I'd also suggest that a "Blu Devotee" is rarely the case. Most of us are devoted to films and 'eye candy' not a format.

question. If you wanted to, can you combine both Blu and dvd into 1 blu-ray double case? What does the cover art for the blu ray look like? I was thinking of this version vs the 3 disc since don't need digital.

I just bought this last month on DVD (cost $5 new, amazon). I have never seen it and really do not see the point in buying it for way more on blu-ray. Really what can they do to it, ok they can add stuff but the DVD set has the samething.

I did not know movie sales work like this. I know when I used to put movies together. They would have to pay 80% to 90% (Starwars was 120%) for the 1st and 2nd week then would go down.

Why even bother doing that? I bought this version and I just took my dvd copy and dumped it off at Moviestop. I figured I would be much happier with the $13 in store credit that I got instead of a dvd copy that I would never watch.

A lot of people use their DVD copies in their cars or in other players in their house.

i like getting a DVD copy with my blu-ray, certainly more so than a digital copy. If you need to take a disc to a friend's house, you'll probably need a DVD. When I'm traveling, my portable and laptop only plays DVDs. I still feel that DVD is going to outlast blu-ray anyway, so having a valued movie in both formats can't hurt.

Blame the slickdealers if you missed out. You can turn around and flip it back to Amazon for a whopping $13 profit.

Snagged Archie as well - man that went fast!

I've admired the Amazon exclusive version since it came out, but I didn't think it would ever drop into my price range. Ordered the Dr. Manhattan mask version from Best Buy over Black Friday weekend, but the case was so shelfworn that I'm glad to have an excuse to send it back.

I understand your point; it's the short sightedness that will doom Blu Ray in the end. It doesn't look like the coming generations are going to care about compromised picture quality as much as they will convenience. Had Blu not had the Playstation connection early on, it might have gone the route of most high end audio/video early adopters, middle age men. My guess is that eventually it will be the latter who will keep its torch burning, but not if the only titles available are Brett Ratner ones.:(

As for the "Blu devotee," sad as these things can be, there are lots of people who only covet the technology and just use the software as a way to justify it.

You brought up some really interesting points, Yankee, and it's a good discussion, but I don't want to be accused of hijacking this great thread, so back on topic.
