What's hyperbolic? How about "making out like bandits"? You're talking about $5. Now let's say there's 1,000 returns like this. $5,000 to Wal Mart is nothing and not worth the charge of fraud and theft. In fact, if caught they could face a fine or worse (then you add in the lawyer's fees) plus no longer will be allowed to take manufacturer's coupons at all.
Now, I do think somebody when they return something should be given back what they've paid (which includes the taxes) but nothing beyond that. You personally are not out that $5 and as for Wal-Mart, if called upon, have to prove those purchases.

You seem to assume that they are only doing this on this one $5 coupon. I find it VERY hard to believe that that is actually the case. More likely, any time someone tries to return something that they used a coupon on, they are pocketing the value of the coupon, and are indeed making out like bandits.
