Great news. My (broken record) hatred for Ryoga aside,I can't get enough of this show. And I am so glad to see Shampoo feature so prominently in these last two episodes.

The new anime adaptation of Ranma 1/2 definitely made a splash in the fall 2024 anime season, as did the announcement that there will be a second season! To celebrate the show's continuation, MAPPA's YouTube channel has released a new music video that brings together the past and present of Rumiko Takahashi's beloved rom-com.

Featuring footage from the 2024 series, the video has been set to the 1990 character song "CHAINA kara no Tegami" ("Letters from China"). The song was performed by Kappei Yamaguchi and Megumi Hayashibara as Ranma, both of whom reprised their roles in the new series. As Ranma attempts to sing the heartfelt song, Ryoga splashes him with hot and cold water.

Check out the new video, complete with retro karaoke vibe:

I do hope there's a really nice physical release of this remake. It is a really fun trip down memory lane.

Re: New Ranma ½ anime

It definitely feels nostalgic. I can't remember the last time I watched the original series. I like this remake better than how Urusei Yatsura was done. It makes me wonder if Rumiko Takahashi's other work of Maison Ikkoku eventually gets a remake in the future (original anime series did horrible here and remains out of print/unlicensed).

As for the home video release, there isn't even one in Japan yet. Not all anime series get home video releases in Japan. With that said, not having a Japan home video release doesn't equate no release here (recent example: Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead).

Re: New Ranma ½ anime

In general, the U.S. market still does a terrible job on anime merch. For many series, they are either available way late or unavailable.

Re: New Ranma ½ anime

I'm really curious to see how they handle the new Ranma ½ anime. The original had such a distinct tone—goofy, chaotic, but also really charming in a way that's tough to replicate.

I wonder if they'll lean more into the romantic or dramatic elements this time around, or stick with the slapstick. Also curious whether it'll be a full reboot from the start of the manga or more of a "faithful adaptation" that covers things the original anime left out.

And the big one: will they modernize it or keep that late-80s/early-90s vibe? Part of Ranma’s charm was how of its time it felt.

Either way, I’m cautiously optimistic. Hoping for something that respects the original while tightening up the storytelling a bit.

Re: New Ranma ½ anime

I have been enjoying this season but the episode where Ranma duels Mousse as a girl confused me. Since when did all the students learn about Ranma's curse? Was it when that creeper at the beginning of this season made that conspiracy video? Because all the boys seemed both aware that the transformation was real, and even blocked Akane from attempting to turn Ranma back into a boy.

Re: New Ranma ½ anime

This season has been enjoyable for me as well.

I don't think there was any sort of big reveal on everyone seemingly knowing about Ranma's curse (not sure about manga). Maybe people eventually found out due to Ranma not making an effort to hide it. This could be one of those things that isn't (fully) explained in the series?

The more I think about it, the less sense it makes. Ranma even disguised himself as a boy at first. Then again, maybe he thought Mousse would back out of the fight otherwise? I need to go back to the old show (which I first watched when I was in late HS/early college) or track down the manga (which I never read).

Still, loving the season.

Re: New Ranma ½ anime

This is the only thing I can find.

Manga chapter 46, Full Body Cat's Tongue Arc chapter 5 https://ranma.fandom.com/wiki/Chapter_46
This chapter confirms, that at this point in the manga continuity, the students of Furinkan High School are now aware of Ranma's curse.

Re: New Ranma ½ anime

Wait. So this new show is not a 1:1 adaptation of the manga? I thought that was the whole point of removing the filler from the original anime. Now I wonder if they might give this series a different ending.
