Re: Official ANIME Discussion Thread

For those who are looking to get the first Rebuild of Evangelion Movie (Evangelion 1.0: You Are [Not] Alone) a legit, licensed, English-subbed R3 Hong Kong version is available at HKFlix.com

http://www.hkflix.com/xq/asp/filmID....qx/details.htm

It's mostly a rehash of the first 6 episodes, but it's rather shiny. For those who can't go region-free, Funimation is going to put it out on November, I believe.

The first link is the first boxset. It contains all extras. It's packaged in a alphacase. It's also OOP.

The second link is the 2nd boxset (re-release). The retail price is $5 cheaper than the previous release. It contains all extras as well. It should be packaged inside a stakpak. It looks like a alphacase, but with one spindle to hold all of the discs. So the packaging and the artwork is only difference (not sure about the disc art).

Re: Official ANIME Discussion Thread

Just Finished:

Jubei Chan 1 & 2 This is a bad case of overratedness. My favorite Anime involves swords...especially sword fights. What an annoying menu interface. The first season was pretty repetitive....Girl transforms...Girl defeats bad guy. Not bad...but far from great. The 2nd season....awesome new character..decent swords fights but I got so sick of hearing..."I am not Jubei Yagyu...I don't want it." What is herald as the best fight is nothing more than a mirror image of each other... Honestly...there is a dozen fights better in Samurai Champloo and Jubei Chan is seriously overhyped. Seriously, Ninjai: The Little Ninja on the internet had better sword fights.

Wolf's Rain - Overall, it was an interesting series. I wasn't a big fan of the ending but in all honestly I am not sure if I could of come up with anything better myself. The characters were interesting and that was pretty much what made it for me.

Banner of the Stars + Crest of the Stars - Heh, Wow! Now that is how you do a space series. I don't think I have been so pleasantly surprised in a long time. I really hope the rest of the series gets licensed...The duchess was scary awesome. All the series needed is more graphic space battles and this would easily fall into anyone's top ten list.

Ai Yori Aoshi - Its a very good series. The characters felt extremely real but the storyline is a bit questionable so far. I think I might reserve full judgement until I see Enishi. It is certainly better than Peach Girl and probably will surpass Suzuka but I still feel Rumbling Hearts is still better by miles...but I was extremely impressed with the first part of the series as a whole.

Comic Party - What a delightful little series. Its purely opinion but Comic Party was far more enjoyable to me than Genshiken. The characters and situations that they encountered were far more realistic. I can't wait to see what Comic Party Revolution holds for me.

Boogiepop Phantom - This got licensed...Did someone lose a bet? Someone had to be drunk? An April's fools joke?!...I hope. Horrible and what A waste of time. This and Serial Experiments Lain belongs in the bin. Seriously...I hope the creators of both series seek immediate psychiatric care...

Fushigi Yūgi - This series has got to have one of the worst 10 to 12 minutes starts I have ever seen. But once that book opens it actually starts to draw you in. Its caught my interest and I love the point of view from which the series is being told. Its pricey and frankly I don't recommend paying those high prices for it but if you do I don't think you will terribly disappointed. The characters in the series are quite unique and have diverse personalities that conflict but that only makes it all the better.

Top Ten Overall:

1.) Samurai Champloo
2.) Death Note
3.) Rurouni Kenshin
4.) Gungrave
5.) Rumbling Hearts
6.) Beck
7.) Bleach
8.) Suzuka
9.) Ghost in the Shell
10.) Azumanga Daioh

Honorable Mention:

Last Exile, Fate/Stay Night, Gun Sword, Genshiken, Le Chevalier D'Eon, Fullmetal Alchemist, Getbackers, My Hime, Kaliedo Star, DNAngel, Baki the Grappler S2, Samurai Deeper Kyo, Mushi-Shi, Samurai 7, Hellsing, Black Blood Brothers, Trinity Blood, Basilisk, Witch Hunter Robin, Hell Girl, Gantz, Afro Samurai, Peacemaker, Witchblade, Utawarerumono, Phantom Memory Kurau, Devil May Cry, Solty Rei, Strawberry Marshmallow, Hell Girl, Peach Girl, Tsubasa, Chobits, Wolf's Rain, Banner of the Stars, Crest of the Stars, Black Lagoon, Ai Yori Aoshi, Fushigi Yūgi, & Comic Party.

The What the Heck Was I Thinking List:

Neo Ranga, Gravitation, ES Otherwise, Samurai Gun, Ninja Scroll, Fooly Cooly, Boogiepop Phantom

Boogiepop Phantom was great! It's actually one of the first shows I ever watched and pretty much got me started into anime. So existential...

I don't know...I am having trouble finishing Red Garden and Gilgamesh...My attention span for them is very short. Serial Experiments Lain was nothing but a mind screw and required too much of an attention span.

You should probably skip Texhnolyze.

If you're having trouble with Gilgamesh, I would suggest dropping it because it pretty much stays slow for the rest of the series. Of course I'm pretty biased against it since it was one of the three shows that turned me off from anime for about two years (If you must know, the other two shows were Samurai Gun and Gantz).

My Goodness... I love the Series... I just finished it

Episodes 25-26 sure do target the inner human psyche but intellegently executed. I like it! I havent seend Death & Rebirth and End of Evangelion yet

This one below is freakin giving me second thoughts as the sealed one is going by far too damn expensive in amazon.

Re: Official ANIME Discussion Thread

I finished Fullmetal Alchemist last week (Loved it, it falls just after Bebop as my favorite anime). I read that a new series (not a reboot) just started in Japan; is that true and has there been any word of a DVD release?

I tried the first two episodes of Tactics. I was so underwhelmed by it I've already cast it into my sell on Ebay pile. I tried Noein next, not impressed with the animation style, but I liked it enough to keep watching longer. Did I ditch Tactics too soon or does it get radically better? Mostly what bugged me is the writing... the dialog was just painful.

"Boogiepop Phantom" and "Serial Experiments Lain" are great shows. Yes, they're demanding. But works of art are often demanding.

Re: Official ANIME Discussion Thread

After spending over a year of watching Anime - over 100 different series/movies, I've gotten tired of it. It seems that I have run out of good anime - past 5 different series are pretty much dull and I quit them after 2 discs.

Seems that only three anime series that I'm looking forward to: Gunslinger Girls second season, Black Lagoon third season, and now FMA: Brotherhood.

Burnout happens to some people. It's not that out ordinary.

Gunslinger Girl S2 should be released in August with one boxset release. 3rd season of Black Lagoon has not aired in Japan. It will be quite a while before this gets to the U.S after it gets licensed. And it's just a matter of time before FMA: Brotherhood gets released on DVD (it won't be this year though).

Yup

Like a good head-hurting independent film. Lain is one of my top 10. Probably around #5 or so. Right under some of my favorite, more straightforward stuff (Berserk, Crest of the Stars, etc) but it's up there with some other favorite mindbenders / philosophical shows (like Evangelion & Kino's Journey).

It certainly makes more sense the 2nd time around but it's still confusing and requires some thinking time.

Are you kidding me? Gantz is one of my favorite shows. Easily top ten sci-fi series of all time, live-action or anime. I almost hate to see what your favorites are.
