Yep. Didn't even have (credited anyway) hand in the screenplay. Looking it up, didn't realize Alan McElroy (Wrong Turn, Wrong Turn 2021, Halloween 4 and... Ballistic: Ecks vs Sever, lol) was one of the writers.

I initially liked Spawn - the idea of a superhero with a limited amount of power was interesting. I fell off after the first 20 issues or so - I don’t know how they resolved that.
But if anyone is going to make a decent version of it, I think the creator has as good of a chance as any.

Been a while since I watched it, but I remember that HBO animated series was pretty good.

Despite all of the delays, and the creator helming, I have hopes there is potential for a good live action version.
Todd Silver, Malcolm Spellman and rising screenwriter Matthew Mixom are penning a new script for the film, which still has Jamie Foxx attached to star.

MacFarlane gave an update to this. He’s at WonderCon this weekend. You can take Blumhouse off the title, they aren’t involved. Doubtful MacFarlane is directing.
He says Scott Silver, who wrote Joker and Joker 2, has written 1/2 a script and later this year, they are going to try to pitch it to the studios. He thinks there will be a demand for hard R comic material,

If Todd McFarlane says this is coming, we can expect as quick a turnaround as with Spawn: The Animation. Oh, wait...

At this point I expect them to announce that Tool is doing the soundtrack.

Has anyone actually watched the 90s Spawn movie in recent years? It hasn't aged well and the FX are as bad as those in Mortal Kombat Anihilation.

Yea the 90s spawn movie was never a good movie tho. I remember it being trashed.
The HBO series was great tho. I watched it a few years ago and it’s still great.
It’s a cool comic. I’ve never been obsessed with it. I do like McFarlane’s sorta underdog story.

The issue has never been the script or anything else with the source material, etc. It's always been on the studios not wanting McFarlane to direct it. He's insistent on directing it though, so the studios keep telling him to fuck off. I'd rather see another hardcore animated series than a live action film. Go to Netflix or MAX, I'm sure they'll let him direct some animation episodes. He does have animation direction experience. He did that really cool Pearl Jam video "Do the Evolution," and I hate Pearl Jam.

Spawn just feels so...'90s. The animated series was weird in that stretches of it were really cool and other parts were boring as sin. I guess modern VFX would allow more of Todd's art to translate in live-action.
