In terms of Prada 2, apparently the breakeven point is $250 million worldwide. It's currently at $232 million.

It is, especially for big openers and assumed to be front loaded films. Michael does lose it's Imax screens for it's 3rd wknd but it seems to be holding up well. A lot of box office folks had it making a billion, but the international market isn't what it was pre-2020 so it looks like this is headed to 7-800m worldwide.

I was going to making a "touching" joke but pivoted.

44% decline is terrific, typically anything < 50% is seen as excellent for a 2nd weekend drop for a movie that opens 'big'.

55%+ is a bit more common. 60%+ is typically where it gets into "bad" territory.

A big part of it is these movies get this gigantic preview the night before the movie officially opens that gets rolled into the "Friday" numbers, it doesn't get this perk the 2nd weekend so a sizable fall is inevitable.

Comparisons:
Deadpool v. Wolverine: -54.2% ($211m -> $96m 2nd weekend)
Inside Out 2: -34.4% ($154m -> $101.2m)
Moana 2: -63.3%
Wicked: -55.1%
Jurassic Park Rebirth: -56.2%
Mission Impossible Final Reckoning: -57.5%
Fantastic Four: First Steps: -67.1% ($117m -> $38.7m)
Captain America: BNW: -68.3%
Wicked For Good: -58%
Superman: -53.2%
How to Train Your Dragon (2025): -56.8%

^ God, there are some terrible movies in that comparison list
Though to be fair, Michael is terrible as well, so.. fair.

This was the first weekend this year with two $50M grossers. 11th weekend like that this decade so far.

Bro, we've got three Sonic the Hedgehog movies in five years and they're good. Give modern mainstream cinema a little credit here!

Exactly!

People talk about the 1970's being a great era for mainstream movies but they didn't have the guts to make one single movie where a hedgehog was the star, let alone 3.

Have you totally forgotten about Dudley Moore's stint as a leading man?

I'm always shocked when I come across yet another 70s movie starring Richard Benjamin. Hard to think of another actor who went from being so prolific and across different genres who seems to be completely forgotten.

Prada is killing it, MK II is doing pretty well. 33% drop for Micheal is crazy good as well.

Sheep Detective did better than most tracking suggested as well.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

People are going to the movies. I love that.

Devil Wears Prada 2 is like MCU-level IP for middle ages and Millenial housewives. That's a good thing. It's not nearly as beloved IP, but I suspect Practical Magic 2 will do decent box office as well. It's an audience that wants new stuff that they like in a theater.

Good on Disney for calling it correctly. I never would have guessed it would have been such a hit. I really think that that demographic is one that has been completely ignored by Hollywood. Since the death of the theatrical rom com and the girlfriend movie (what do you call that genre? e.g. Beaches, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Steel Magnolias etc.) there's been little reason for a lot of women to go out to the theater if they aren't geeky, or film buffs or in to horror. And a lot of the recent movies that have catered to that audience have blown up.

And yes, it feels great that there's a lot of love to spread around. People are going back to the movies and for a very wide range of different genres. I agree with Ryan Gosling's recent comments on how it was up to them as film makers to make movies that appeal to audiences. And basically studios need to stop blaming the audience for their failures.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

One of the more interesting box office wknds in recent years, just about everyone winning. (MK2 likely coming in under 40m is the disappointment) Amazon's Sheep Detectives seems to be an underrated success as well. Should have decent holds with no big releases this coming wknd.

Not great. Costed $20M to make due to Cameron’s new 3D cameras. I know she’s not Taylor Swift, but her concert film made $90M opening weekend, and her…Album listening party made twice this much.
It’s a phenomenal 3D film though. I hope more folks seek it out.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Wow really? It's more than just a concert film? Seems like it's already gone by Thursday. Having trouble trying to schedule everything I want to see with A-list next week. MK II is also loosing it's premium screens by Thursday so they may have a pretty big drop on their second weekend.

Early estimates, I'll repost later. Very good hold for Michael and excellent opening for Obsession
