I never resd the books so I'm seeing it from a regular audience's viewpoint:

The first and second act were amazing mythology buildup with cute references (I'd seen enough King movies and read a couple of his other books). The third act was completed disjointed from those previous sections. It went straight into a shoot 'em up action film and no that's not a spoiler since its in the trailers and TV spots.

Even the few glimpses we get of the powers is unsatisfying. I had high hopes for this but it was certainly not as I was expecting. Then again most Stephen King film adaptations have been disappointing, the TV adapations have been better.

Looks like it won't break $20M this weekend.

I think Sony projected $19 mil, so they're doing okay in their eyes. They knew what was going to happen to it.

Except the studio always lowballs it.

I can't help but wonder how this would have fared in the days before the days of review data bases like RT and Metacritic, like the early to mid 90s when people really only checked one or two reviews (usually the make or break was Siskel and Ebert, and if just one of them gave it a Thumbs Up, it stood a chance.)

Looking at Monday's boxoffice, Dark Tower fell to 3rd behind The Emoji Movie. That's pretty embarrassing.

Naw not really, it's the last weeks of summer, parents will take their kids to any piece of shit in theaters right now.

Well ... as a movie it was on par with Prometheus 2: Not-Alien Covenant ... competently made on some technical standpoints, but oddly amateurish and tragically devoid of any kind of soul. I enjoyed the 90 minutes in the theater but don't see myself ever revisiting this.

Unpopular opinion here: Idris Elba was not good in this. Don't get me wrong, he was Idris Elba which is always worth watching. However he was Idris Elba. I did not see a character here. His Roland did not carry the emotional wreckage of the last Gunslinger, a man who has literally seen his world crumble and every person he cared about killed by The Man In Black. He did not convey the single-minded spirit of vengeance (see what I did there?) that Roland has. Most of that can be put back on the script, but even then this was still a phoned in performance by a great actor.

When did Matthew McConaughey become second-rate Christopher Walken?

How long was it from the start of filming to the results? I honestly thought they had a different actor for Jake at the end. That kid seriously aged.

While tolerable as a standalone (or as fan fiction) this was an insult to the source material. I honestly hope the TV show does not come to fruition. Hopefully in another 20 years somebody will do this right.

According to IMDb, filming was between April and August 2016 but who knows how long re-shoots were.

McConaughey passed on GotG 2 for this because he thought it would be a major franchise opportunity for himself. I'm kind of surprised he thought so much of the script.

I'm sure the original script and the final movie ended up being pretty different. There were too many cooks in the kitchen on this one.

The streak McConaughey was on of good, successful projects has grinded to a halt.

The Sea of Tress
The Free State of Jones
Gold
The Dark Tower.

All more or less flops.

That was a very short McConnaissance. His next two projects look iffy too.
