DVD Upconversion was added in an update some time ago, and it's awesome!

I'm thinking of getting a PS3 for my brother. He lives out in the boondocks and is stuck with a dial-up internet connection.

Is there any way to update the PS3 without a high speed internet connection? Can you download updates and game patches, and put them on a blank disc or usb thumb drive?

Firmware updates yes, but I don't know about game patches. I think you have to do that through the PS3.

Don't do it! Warhawk will eat your life!

I kid. It may or may not click with you, but I think it's close to what I'd design if I were to design a game. It's got a GTA vibe where you can do whatever you want, and for the most part you can play to your strengths and be competitive...unless you get in a game with dudes who can really fly the Warhawks.

Sony suffers financially if we buy a PS3 but dont buy ANY games, right? They only make money back on games not movies?

I bought Warhawk when it first came out, but I still haven't opened it. My backlog is huge (90+), so I need to stop renting games every week. I keep meaning to play Warhawk and others, but never get around to it.

About 3 or 4 months back Sony stated they are now making a profit on each unit sold. They did not say how much of a profit they are making. I would guess they are just above breaking even.

Sony has already won -- HD DVD is dead and they have the market completely cornered on high-def players. Anything after that is gravy for them. Here's what I mean when I say that -- even if people buy the system as a blu ray player (because it's the cheapest BR player), Sony probably figures there will be some game for such cultural significance (be it Guitar Hero, GTA IV, whatever), that will tempt the non gamer to buy it. So they win there. And of course since they own a movie studio, a thriving blu-ray market is good for them too.

My brilliant co-worker decided to reboot his unit while downloading the 2.2 patch, now we believe the boot section/firmware is messed up.

1) He can access the system menu, but discs will not play (games, dvd, etc.)
2) When he tries to update through the menu it says he is up to date. (v2.2)
3) He tried a hard reset, but apparently that only installed the OS while retaining the firmware version (v2.2)
4) He has tried the update though external media twice through two different processes

Is there any way to correct this besides sending it back to Sony? Obviously anything along the lines of opening the unit won't be acceptable.

Good news: New store layout coming.
Bad news: No updates for the next two weeks.
Full story: PlayStation Blog

The new Store will no longer be browser based in the same way the current Store is, making things A LOT faster and smoother; hence the required firmware update.

One thing I noticed with the last update but hadn't read before : Now all downloaded games have been put in a sub-folder under "Games". For a second, I thought all my arcade games besides Pixl Junk Monsters were deleted.

I looked it up and it seems like they'll plan to start making money on consoles next month

Stupid question, but I'll ask it anyway-can you go straight to 2.20 from 2.10 or should I update to 2.17 first? I assume that you can bypass the 2.17 update, but I just want to be 100% sure. Thanks.

You just DL the most current version, no matter which version you used previously.

That's what I figured. Updating is extremely easy because I use the Micro Cruzer flash drive. Thanks for the quick response.

Don't worry, I buy enough games to account for profit for the both of us
And I'd imagine they make a boatload of royalties off blu-rays.

Is this an option? or is it only for fully downloaded games and not demos? I still have all my demos and downloaded games listed separately.

I've got no idea, but I didn't select that. Both my DL demos and full games are in the folder. Only uninstalled demos aren't.

Any word on Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2? Is it gonna ship with pre-orders of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Limited Edition?

Also, anywhere else offering the extra BD disc offered here? http://www.ebgames.com/Catalog/Produ...spx?sku=270209
