Re: Prometheus 2 (D: Scott) S: Fassbender, Rapace

Doing the rounds for his latest film The Martian, Ridley Scott has told us that the next film in the Prometheus saga will be called Alien: Paradise Lost.

Building on the literary heritage of the previous film the allusion to John Milton is certain to have implications for the film’s plot. Dealing with the Fall of Man, Milton’s epic poem deals with the fall of Satan and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden – the loss of innocence and a terrifying, irreversible act is surely going to be a factor in the journey towards the events of Alien.

Going for marquee value over continuity, I see.

Because the religious symbolism in the first film just wasn't pretentious enough.

Hopefully the 4th planned film is a remake of Prometheus.

Either that, or subtly distancing this film from Prometheus while nudging it closer to the Alien franchise, hoping the reception will be a bit better.

Kind of funny to see a direct link to the Alien franchise given all the vagueness as to how Prometheus actually connected before with all the denials about it being a prequel and talk about it being it's own thing.

Yeah, I get it, though.
With Prometheus, they wanted to keep "Alien" out of the discussion as much as possible, because they wanted it to be its own thing in the same 'universe' or whatever. That backfired. People knew it was tied to Alien (especially with that ending).

Now that the cat is out of the bag, and Prometheus isn't exactly regarded as a masterpiece (I like it. Haters gonna hate.), it makes sense to now distance themselves from the "Prometheus" name, and start fresh, in a way, with a new Alien trilogy that may or may not acknowledge all of the elements of Prometheus.

Before I jump all over Scott I have to wonder if Fox pushed him to use the Alien name.

Hell, Scott could go back and edit Prometheus and call it Alien: Prometheus The Final Cut.

Ridley Scott has never gone back to re-edit a film for an alternate cut on home video, what is this nonsense?

Makes me think if it was actually successful it most certainly would have branched in to it's own thing, at least for another sequel before connecting back to Alien.

Re: Alien: Paradise Lost (Prometheus 2) (D: Scott) S: Fassbender, Rapace

I actually didn't mind Prometheus. Sure a couple of the scientists were dumb, and a few things didn't add up, but i had fun with it. The biggest problem for me was actually Noomi Rapace. She looked weird in the movie and i found her character to be rather annoying. I am more than open to seeing the continuation of this series, just not sure i want it headed back into the realm of the Alien movies. I want to see more of the Engineers and their world.

I loved Prometheus, and I agree with the above. To me, Prometheus was more of a science fiction movie with some horror overtones, whereas Alien was a horror movie with a sci-fi setting. I hope the sequels keep this distinction. Prometheus dealt with some pretty big ideas, IMO---and it had some amazingly big visuals.

I thought Rapace was fine. She could only do as good as her script could go. I actually liked what her character was after. She was interesting character that didn't have good plotting for her.

David on the other hand? Great character.

Rapace was one of the few characters I really enjoyed in Prometheus.

Yeah, exactly. In a way, it was super ambitious for them to attempt to keep the two franchises separate, at least in marketing, but as I recall, Ridley had announced years prior that he was doing an Alien prequel, then later basically said, "No no, that project's totally over I swear, but here's my new project which is totally not a prequel but may or may not be in the same universe, wink wink. Seriously guys, it's not tied to Alien, just, like, stop asking."

It was just so obviously an attempt to disguise it as something else. Then the trailer pretty much solidified that, yes, Prometheus was tied to Alien. I think, if Alien had NEVER been mentioned by Ridley and others involved, it might have worked out totally differently.

Anyway... yeah, keep Lindelof away from this, and it might be excellent.

That did not bother me as much as that the film reeks of hokey new age religion/science/mythology nonsense.
