Re: Prometheus 2 (2015, Scott) S: Fassbender, Rapace
I thought the assembly cut of 3 was just as big a mess as the theatrical version, just longer. There's a good film trying to get out of that mess somewhere, but I think that it's buried so deeply that Fincher would have to remake the movie from scratch to get it out.

I honestly can't see what people find so difficult to understand about Alien 3. It's a rather straightforward story.

Resurrection was a pretty decent movie up until the end.
It was a very visually striking picture, it brought interesting new characters to the universe (hell, I'd love to see spinoff movies with the crew of the Betty), and it gave us a plausible explanation as to why the hell Ripley was there (seriously, coincidence only carries you so far).
The end however, was pureed shit and (I think) why everybody hates it. But really, a genetically engineered alien-human hybrid looking for its momma was still better than the creatures in Prometheus.
Prometheus was a bad film from a story standpoint but it had some good actors, and the special effects and set design were really good.

Some days you just want to slap Hollywood execs in the head.
No one wants to see Prometheus 2 any more than we want to see Avatar 2. In other words, yeah, we'll come out to your movie - but if it's a decision over whether to do Blade Runner first or this, by all means give us Blade Runner.
Worse case scenario: Prometheus 2 bombs and then no studio wants to give Ridley money for Blade Runner.

Yeah, Blade Runner is great and doesn't need a sequel. But Alien was already tarnished with Resurrection and the later AvP films.

No. No no no no no. Give me ten thousand Prometheus sequel before one more Blade Runner movie. Alien is a great film and it will forever irk me that Prometheus has tarnished it, but Blade Runner is a masterpiece and Scott cannot possibly improve upon it in any way. Any movie he makes in a Blade Runner universe will lessen Blade Runner, and that is not something we need in the world.
Either way it's played... The Nostromos still arrives to the location for its own reason.

I just don't get this line of thinking that so many people seem to have. How was Alien tarnished by the sequel and tie-ins that you mentioned? I loved it when I first saw it and I still love it, regardless of the other movies.

I actually thought Resurrection was an improvement over Alien 3, until the final act. That newborn stuff was worse than anything Prometheus dished out. However, Prometheus is guilty of needing dumber than shit characters to drive the plot forward. That's a major pet peeve of mine, even in a horror movie.
I will say this much about Resurrection: the crew of smugglers was obviously Whedon's blueprint for Firefly, so I will give it that.

I loved the water scene from Resurrection, but that's it.
I enjoyed AVPR more than Prometheus and Resurrection.
Anyone hear about the Alien Isolation video game plot?
Sounds like that'd have been a nice sequel.

There May Not Be a Xenomorph in 'Prometheus' Sequel, Says Ridley Scott
8:40 AM PDT 9/25/2014 by Graeme McMillan
Ridley Scott has opened up about the development process for the follow-up to his 2012 Alien prequel Prometheus, teasing what audiences will see in the movie — and one particular thing that they won’t.
“The beast is done. Cooked,” he told Yahoo! Movies, referring to the classic xenomorph designed by H.R. Giger for the original Alien movie. “I got lucky meeting Giger all those years ago. It’s very hard to repeat that,” he went on. “I think it wears out a little bit. There’s only so much snarling you can do.”
Instead, he says, “I think we’ve found the next step. I thought the Engineers were quite a good start.” The next movie, he teased, will “probably have to go with [Noomi Rapace’s Elizabeth Shaw] and [Michael Fassbender’s android David] – without his head.” He joked that audiences will “find out how he gets his head back on” in the sequel.
“Right now, as we speak, it’s being written,” he said of the status of the movie, which he said has apparently made it through 15 drafts already (Fox confirmed to THR that it was developing a sequel back in 2012, although no release date has been set by the studio). Also being actively developed, Scott teased, was the much-discussed Blade Runner follow-up. “It’s on the charts,” he said. “I can’t say when that would be yet, because of [Harrison Ford’s] thing with Star Wars. It’s a sequel — it’s what happens next. It’s quite surprisingly clever.”

If Damon Lindelof isn't available to write the script, might I suggest someone from Under the Dome?
