Funny that this thread was bumped today, as I just read this, which was posted today:

Pretty good write-up about wanting to write them off initially, but then kinda coming around to appreciate them for what they were at the time.

I didn't hear "Is This It" until 2004 when a buddy of mine lent me his copy. I popped the disc into my car stereo and was flooded from beginning to end. I was lucky that I wasn't exposed to all the hype that it got in 2001 and I heard it without any preconceived notions. It's one of my favorite albums and I like the cover too.

It's fun to look back at perspectives from 2002. If you take The Strokes for what they are (a band that shamelessly wears their influences on their sleeves and doesn't really try anything new), they're pretty fun in their own right. Of course they were being deemed the saviors of rock music back then so I understand the backlash. Personally I always found The White Stripes way more interesting and unique.
