THE STROKES are the Most Overrated Band in Ages
I've heard the album and just saw them live last week. These guys are Velvet Underground-Lite, lacking the creativity, songwriting, and sense of humor of that brilliant band. This was one of the most boring shows Ive been to recently, all of them just stood there like a bunch of zombified automatons...as if they thought "we are too cool to actually look like we're having that much fun". This band blows. Over and out.

When did you decide you didn't like the album?
After you bought the CD, or after you saw them live?
Seems like if you hate their music, which you imply in your post, you wouldn't have wasted money to see the show.
Not directed at you at all, but I can already see the "this band is popular, therefore they must suck" backlash on the horizon.
True, they're not the Velvet Underground, but they aren't bad either.

Hype without substance. Just another prefab "alternative" wunderkind.
Either (a) the music industry has sunk so low that a band like The Strokes can garner huge amounts of critical buzz with so little to offer, or (b) I'm getting old.

They aren't the new coming to me, but man, when they play their song on the commerical alternative station here in Atlanta it is SO much better than other songs out now. I heard the whole CD and thought it was okay. Hyped a bit more than necessary maybe. I love bands influenced by VU... from what I heard I like the Feelies and Luna better.

The single - Last Nite - is lots better than the rest of the CD.
Also it came out a while ago on their Modern Age EP. I was hoping for lots more from them...
But it is certainly better than the crap that makes up Modern Rock/New Rock radio. Especially here in Atlanta where 99X tries to pass off 80's style hair metal junk as modern music - but then again thats whats popular now.
I cant wait when alternative rock once again is the place to hear well written songs - not some dude yelling on top of a mindless guitar track.

I don't listen to the radio much, so didn't know about the Strokes till I saw their CD at a listening station at an independent CD store. I listened to it, thought it was reminiscent of Lou Reed (not Velvet Underground coz you need John Cale to be truly cool), so I bought it.
It's enjoyable, but unless the singer stops singing through a dixie cup I don't think I'm buying anymore CDs by the band.

Actually, though, that's the only reason I really like the Strokes. I love the VU, but they're just okay...just hoping they drive a nail in the coffin of those rap metal bands...

I've only heard 2 or 3 of their songs, (one being Last Night obviously) and I don't see what the fuss it about. Last Night sucks and the other couple songs I heard were just ok. I wouldn't consider buying the album based on the few songs I've heard anyway, but it's not really my type of music.

I just think it's real stupid when a brand new fu(**n band comes out and people try to justify them sucking by comparing them to some of the greatest, most influential bands in history.
Gee, that's fair.
THe guys are in their early 20's. Give em a break.
They have one album.

They don't suck... and that's just it.
I don't think there has ever been a period of time where so many popular bands just flat out suck as they do now.
So, while the Strokes aren't the second coming, they are ages beyond their contemporaries.

Resurrecting this thread because it's kind of cool to read opinions from around when they first became popular. I still think (like most I believe?) that the first album was the best thing they ever did.
Any thoughts on their new EP? I kind of like Threat of Joy but not so into the other two tracks.

Interesting to read to see posters on here that I have never heard of before nor will ever hear from again. Who gets "retired" on here? Also, alanis' career on here ended before it ever really began.

I never liked The Strokes. They were rich kids from NY playing hard at trying to look like dirtbags. Well, they didn't have to play that hard.
By that same token, I think Julian's contribution to the most recent Daft Punk release was terrfic.

yeah I had the same point of view honestly then started giving them more of a chance. I guess it only took me over a decade to. They definitely had big promotion behind them before they even had an album out and are kind of "fake" in that way. I do enjoy the first album especially and parts of the second one. The others have their moments.

But I really did like that Casablancas song a lot on Random Access Memories. Great voice to it, but that was a pure Daft Punk creation.

Funny that this thread was bumped today, as I just read this, which was posted today:
My CD Collection: Week 1, The Strokes, "Is This It"
Pretty good write-up about wanting to write them off initially, but then kinda coming around to appreciate them for what they were at the time.

Now as far as that whole "dirtbag" aesthetic goes - my favorite band that actually had cred and great tunes was Jet. They were considered the second coming of AC/DC for a bit.

Now that we've had 14 years to think about their legacy in this thread bump, I admit I did like their debut cd, but they've never come close to equaling it since.

I didn't mind Comedown, but it's my least favorite of the five albums.
New EP just isn't enough for me.
I hate when people think that Is This It? is the be all and end all for them. It's like Weezer fans with the Blue album.
