Re: "Alien" Prequel (Ridley & Tony Scott to produce).
I'm glad Ridley is directing, but why was there such a huge stink by FOX over him choosing his daughter's boyfriend as a possible director initially? Did they think the movie would bomb without his name attached as director?
I mean if Ridley hand picked the guy, I assume that would be good enough.

I am still a little hesitant this will work out with Scott as director until the i hear about the 1st day of shooting. How many projects has his name been attached to over the past decade exactly that he hasnt ended up directing?

Could be okay with Ridley at the helm.
I like idea of the alien infestation of the bone ship. How those large lifeforms would deal with these tiny highly aggressive parasites. No humans involved.
Could be something really cool.

Re: "Alien" Prequel (Ridley & Tony Scott to produce).
Remakes as we know them involve a new (and usually hack) writer totally rewriting the script and usually adding some crappy twist ending. I'm talking about treating the script like a play and not changing a word. The only time this has been attempted that I know of was Gus van Sant's Psycho, but I think he made a mistake trying to copy the film shot by shot. I'm talking about.... maybe you guys are too young or haven't spent much time in the theatre to see how differently a script can be treated.

I always assumed that the space jockey was the pilot of the ship and that he was carrying the eggs (in an containment stasis area) to use on an enemy of maybe even for research. One got loose and got to the space jockey, and his death lead to the crash of the ship. A couple hundred years later, the Nostromo crew lands and discovers the ship.
I'm going off of what was seen/implied in "Alien". But it is possible that here could be other big alien dudes on the ship that the crew never found.
But considering that neither "Aliens" nor "Alien Resurrection" mention running into the "space jockey" species, the "last one left" could be plausible.

Ok, I just got infinitely more excited for this. Ridley is still cranking out some damn fine films, so I have zero qualms about him taking over. Hell, after the last couple atrocities I highly doubt he could do any worse. This is fantastic news.

Wasn't that the whole point of his character? You can't replace Bill Paxton.
Let's hope they get the next movie right because studio execs sure don't seem to know what to do. I remember reading that about 20 people wrote Alien 3 because they couldn't tell what to do with the next one and that shows on screen.

The behind the scenes stuff for "Alien 3" can confirm that nobody really knew what the hell they wanted to do with that movie.
Here's hoping that this movie has a respectably low # of writers (under 3) and it doesn't get Alien 3/Resurrection bad/silly.

From Empire magazine:
Since the prequel was announced, it’s been assumed that it would tell the story of how those nasty, slavering xenomorphs came to land on LV-426 in the first place. But after listening to Sir Ridley, suddenly we’re not so sure…
“It’s a brand new box of tricks,” said Sir Ridley. “We know what the road map is, and the screenplay is now being put on paper. The prequel will be a while ago. It’s very difficult to put a year on Alien, but [for example] if Alien was towards the end of this century, then the prequel story will take place thirty years prior.”
“I never thought I’d look forward to a sequel,” said Sir Ridley. “But a prequel is kind of interesting. I’m looking forward to doing that.”

I'd rather they leave the "space jockey" alone. That's such a cool scene in the movie, where they come upon that giant mummified corpse and you don't know what it is, what it was doing, what it looked like when it was alive, how it long it had been dead... and it just gives the whole movie a powerful sense of scope and tells that us space if big and mysterious and frightening.

I'm more worried about re-designing the xenomorph. Cameron had the right idea when he chose to simplify the design in the sequel.

I like everything so far.... Space Jockey, possible new Giger designed Aliens, 30yrs before Alien (so no Ripley recasting). The thing is it needs to be mostly new stuff, and not tied to Alien... it's a chance for a new series of Alien films, which I believe is the idea here.
