get the PS2. the DC is dead and game support is disappearing. why invest in a dead game system. if you do not want to spend PS2 money then get a PS1 for now since it has a ton of games out and is cheap.

If you do not want to buy a PS1 or 2 then wait for the gamecube or xbox. do not waste your money on the DC now.

Why is getting a PSone a better choice than a DC? The DC is the same price and has an excellent selection of 128bit games. The PSone has a large library with many good games (a lot of garbage too), but you can buy these games when you buy a PS2. Buy the DC now, because it will continue to be the best game system throughout most of 2001. 2002 will probably be the year to get a PS2. It will have a better library of games by then and the price may drop by then.

I would vote for the DC. I just got my DC last Feb. and I've been playing it non stop. Money wise it just makes more sense. For less than the PS2 you can get the system, accessories and games. Plus since you have kids, like I do, if they somehow trash your system your only out $100, instead of $300. I would get a DC now, wait out the year and then buy the next great system(PS2, Gamecube, or XBox).

This kind of retarded sh1t makes me sick. The system is not "dead". The Saturn is dead. The Super Nintendo is dead. The Genesis is dead. The Atari 2600 is dead. None of them sell new systems anymore, none of them have any games coming out marketed towards the mass public, and none of them have games featured in any gaming magazines. The Dreamcast is not "dead", yet. It still sells systems, still sells games, and still has a lot of games coming out for it. That combined with the fact that is is really cheap and already has a plethora of great games to choose from makes it a great purchase.
When stores run out of Dreamcasts in stock, when games stop coming out for the system, when games stop selling for the system and when Dreamcast games are no longer featured in gaming magazines and sites, you can then say it's officially "dead". But until then....

I don't think a system is dead until you stop playing it. I mean, just because future games will not be forthcoming for the system, does that means the games that are out there will suddenly go bad? I'll still enjoy Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive 2, Soul Reaver etc just as much as I always have. The only reason I can see for labeling a system dead is if you are the kind of person that is always running after the next big thing. And I feel sorry for those people because any system at any time will be "terminal" for them.

Dreamcast definately.

Right now has better games.

And right now I can actually go in a store and buy one off the shelf.

Buying a game system isn't an "investment." It's a purchase. And systems don't "die." Even my old systems (stuff like the Jaguar, Lynx, TurboDuo and Express, Virtual Boy, etc.) still work just fine, and have lots of fun games.

Worried about not enough 'new' games? Try playing through the ones you have and like! Forgte the 'cheats' and work through them. Heck, one good game (like Goldeneye or Perfect Dark on the N644) will give you well over 100 hours of gameplay to get through, not to mention the multiplayer options. If you have time to play all of the good games to the end and still aren't happy, then you need to get outside for some fresh air and exercise. Or read a good book. $^)

Gotta vote for Dreamcast, my friends and I were having a blast playing Virtual Tennis, we are addicted.

The Dreamcast gameplay seems smoother than the PS2 and price is a real advantage. Strike up another vote for the Dreamcast.

Dreamcast puts PS2 to shame.

A game system is dead when the company manufacturing it says that they are discontinuing it. you can say it is not dead if you want because stores still have the product , but it is not being manufactured and is dead.

Now if you want to argue that companies are going to continue to announce new software for the Dreamcast- It is not going to happen. those that have product close to completion may finish and produce the games but many will decide to just shift resources to a game system that is being manufacured and as a result has a growing and not finite customer base to sell to.

The fact is that the dreamcast will not provide a software developer with an ever larger customer base to sell to so why create new games for it. Even Sega is going to produce games for PS2, Xbox and every other game system that they can make money on. they will more than likely pull away from the Dreamcast once they unload the remaining Hardware. if you think i am wrong then let's see what happens once the inventory is gone. Sega does not have the best name in the console market for sticking by their customers.

We can disagree all we want but i think even the PS1 is a better buy since sony is still manufacturing the units and it has a larger base and is still getting some new games and it plays backups.

In fact if you look at upcoming games many companies are delaying or shelving or even cancelling Dreamcast products - could it be because they realize the system is dead and no longer worth spending money on it.

I guess i am not the only retard and many of them work at software publishers.

I understand why you like the dreamcast it was a good game system that just never made it and had the plug pulled. enjoy the games.

However do not get mad if others tell people who are looking to buy into a system that they are better served buying a currently manufactured system not a discontinued one.

We're all entitled to our own opinions. Let me rephrase my original question. The original question was, "If you had no gaming system at all and wanted to get either a DC or a PS2 which would you get and why?" Let me leave off the "why" part and just do the consensus. DC or PS2?

DC pulling further ahead with 12 votes.
PS2 remaining the same at 5 votes.

I think you have to decide what you are looking for. if you just want some good games now and do not care if the system will have many new games in the future then buy the DC. especially if you only want to pay around $99 dollars.

If you want a system now that will cost you more but will continue to get new games into the future then go for the PS2 .

I would not select a system based on votes at all. Pick the system that will work for you based on your needs. You know how we all feel but what types of games do you like. Does the Dreamcast have those games now. if not then do not get it since future game support is all guesswork right now and only likely to get worse not better.

That's pretty much what I was asking in February. I went with the Dreamcast and I love it. No regrets at all. Easily worth the $100 investment.

Another vote for the DC but really just get a Super Nintendo. I don't play my Dreamcast anymore because I am hooked on a Super Nintendo. You can usually get great games too for like $5. Nintendo was making the best games when they were making games for the SNES.

Dreamcast all the way. Don't listen to ppl who tell you how great the PS2 will be in the future, that ain't worth spit. As it stands there's what, ONE great game for PS2 (SSX)...pathetic.

Dreamcast has an amazing array of high-quality games. Hell, it would wipe the floor with the PS2 if only Virtua Tennis was available IMHO, that game is one of the very best I have ever played (and I am not particularly a tennis fan)..

Another item I haven't seen mentioned much is the controllers. The analog triggers on the bottom of the DC controller bring a whole new dimension to driving games---the gas and brakes are ANALOG! This makes so much difference IMO that I think the DC racing games are the most engaging I've played on a home system. Don't forget that even if you hook a a steering wheel and pedals to a system, you will only get analog control with the pedals if the game supports it. ALL DC racing games sport this capability.

Finally, built in modem. You can email your saved games or upload them to back up your memory card. Try that on a PS2. Hell, the DC modem is saving my butt right now---my cable modem is down, but I'm still able to surf and check email via my Dreamcast!!! One last word on this subject: PSO.

Honestly, if the PS2 and the DC were both the same price, I would still say that the DC is by far the better deal. At $99 it's a slam dunk! PS who?

Also, do the standard controllers support the analog thing you just mentioned or do I need some sort of special controller with vibe pack attached??? Maybe you could post some details so that I might expand my DC horizon....

Test Drive LeMans is a great DC racing game.

Daytona is a lot of fun too.

Sorta depends what style of racing you prefer though.

F355 is supposed to be really good for realism,
but that isn't as much my bag.

Rush 2049 is an amazing arcade style futuristic racing game,
with 4-player deathmatch!

The standard DC controller features the analog triggers
underneath. The amount you press them controls the amount you press down on the gas or brake - it's great!

I'm a die-hard Sega fan, but I have to admit that the DC controllers suck! The way they're designed means you must hold them with your wrists strongly bent (close to 90 degrees) while you may be applying massive pressure to the rear buttons thru your index fingers. Result: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Seriously. Extended time on Crazy Taxi doing crazy boosts will hurt you.

I also dislike how you can completely fold your fingers around the 'grips' on each side. They're too shallow.

They could get around this a bit by flaring out the sides of the controller more diagonally. The PS controller is actually rather well designed. It fits in your hand comfortably. Notice how the button face is at a right angle (almost) to the grips. You keep your fists vertical holding the grips while your thumbs fold easily over the button face.

In terms of standard controllers, it's PS/PS2, N64, then DC. The Japanese Saturn controller was awesome for 2D fighting games.
